Eddie George: Jeff Fisher convinced me to take Tennessee State job

New Tennessee State head coach Eddie George is crediting his Tennessee Titans coach, Jeff Fisher, for convincing him to take his first coaching job.

George said that before talking to Fisher about it, he was leaning toward declining the Tennessee State job offer.

“I was still very lukewarm on the idea of taking the opportunity. I was probably at a 30 percent chance I would do it at that point,” George said.

But then George relayed to Fisher that he had been offered the job, despite his lack of coaching experience.

“I said, Hey man, I want to talk to you about this: Listen to this ridiculous idea: I just got approached with this opportunity to coach at TSU. Be the head coach at TSU. What do you think about that?” George said he asked Fisher.

“He says, ‘Oh, Eddie, that would be great! You would be awesome!'” George said.

And George says Fisher knows him as well as anyone, and that when Fisher told him to do it, he figured he should do it.

“Jeff drafted me in 1996. We went on an amazing run here in Tennessee. And he knows how to push my buttons. I tell you I was ready to run through a brick wall when I got off the phone with him. I said, Let’s do it,” George said.

If George is a success, Tennessee State can thank Fisher for getting him to take the job.

  1. I know this article is going to spawn all kinds of derision for Jeff Fisher.
But he was a darn good coach in the NFL for a long time until his last few years. Even Don Shula didn’t do squat for his last 20 years as a coach.

  2. Yeah he’ll be ‘great’ until he realizes that the top tier coaches either have a longtime trusted staff doing exactly what they need, or they work 16 hours a day lol. Head coach ain’t a vacation

  3. Haha, that’s setting the bar pretty low. It’s like saying he’s also a better coach than Hue Jackson.

Jeff Fisher is a better coach than Mike McCarthy

  4. Agree on Jeff Fisher. His problem at the end was that he wasn’t able to adapt to the modern game.

  5. Hopefully Jeff Fisher didn’t convince Eddie George to go 7-9 every year.

  6. Without googling and checking career stats vs earnings, I’d think Jason Garrett could give Jeff a run for his money.

  7. A conservative and mostly unsuccessful HC but Fisher’s teams would always play physical. His Titans from 1999-2003 could have won it all …

  8. Good for Eddie but Jeff Fisher lost his luster 10 years ago,
I wouldn’t take his advice lol

Jeff Fisher the most well paid and longest tenured 8-8 coach in NFL history

I think you’re forgetting about Marvin Lewis.

  10. 8-8 memes aside, it’s cool to hear about the relationships players and coaches have years down the line. I wish them both well.

  11. What killed Jeff Fisher was Bud Adams giving roster control to him and effectively forcing out Floyd Reese.

Again, in St. Louis, Fisher had roster control.

Some coaches make horrible GM’s, some make great GM’s, Fisher wasn’t a good GM.

  12. Jeff Fisher deserves respect for truly understanding the power of a dominate Front 4 DLine. Kearse, Donald, those are guys Fisher knew were gonna be ballers. He’s like the anti- Sean Payton and I believe he’s eaten Payton’s lunch most times their teams met

You’re defending Jeff Fisher and talking trash about the winningest coach in NFL history. Good analogy.

  14. “Even Don Shula didn’t do squat for his last 20 years as a coach.”
    _________

Shula made the playoffs 4 of his 6 final years and they won a playoff game in 3 of those years. They didn’t keep him around for all that time just because of the 1970s.
