Bill Belichick: Matt Patricia has been heavily involved in Patriots’ pre-draft process

When Matt Patricia was fired as head coach of the Lions and hired by the Patriots, he did not get the title of defensive coordinator, which had been his previous job in New England. That led to questions about what, exactly, Patricia would do for the Patriots.

One thing he’s doing is helping the Patriots prepare for the NFL draft.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters today that Patricia has been among the most important people on the staff in accumulating information about draft prospects.

“We’ve accumulated a lot of information,” Belichick said. “Matt has rejoined us and been heavily involved in the process.”

Patricia has previously worked only on the coaching side, not the personnel side, but under Belichick the Patriots have not had the strong dividing line between coaching and personnel that some teams have. Patricia has also been involved in free agent signings, and Belichick seems to believe personnel is where Patricia can provide the most value to the Patriots.

  1. This gives us a good chance to see Bill start practically from Ground Zero and see how he builds a team. He had no stars last year and only one marquee name (Cam Newton) and still won 9 games. I wouldn’t laugh at his process.

  2. If you have a solid personnel operation, they should be guiding the coaches through the process, getting them familiar with each tier of players. The coaches can make the final decision, as long as they stay within each tier. Of course, when you have Tom Brady, you can do whatever you want and not get questioned. But now that Brady is gone, scrutiny at every corner. Welcome to the real football world.

  3. Keep doing what you’ve been doing so poorly for 20 years, Bill.

One selection made by Scott Pioli > All Belichek selections combined.

They only won 7 games last year and missed the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, in those 20 years they had Tom Brady at QB. If they miss the playoffs again people will start to say it was all Brady and no Belichick.

  5. Congratulations Buffalo, on winning the AFC East before the draft has even happen!

  6. Bill has had an unprecedented amount success as a coach. His coaching tree? Not so much.

  7. I used to laugh watching the Lions draft room when Bob Quin would try to fist bump and bro hug Patricia after every pick and Patricia would just awkwardly sit there like “who did this guy just take?” Oh man lol good times.

  8. Cool, I guess we will see, although Bill still will make the ultimate decision though…

  9. I think as long as they keep this slob away from the defensive play calling, we’ll be alright.

  10. BB should allow anyone on that management team to make the picks besides him. Great coach, dumpster GM.

  11. after reading the headline, this Lions fan thinks the Patriots are royally screwed

  12. Why? He’s dumb as a stump. The best thing Bill can do for him is get him signed up Jenny Craig.

  13. The 2020 season was an anomaly. For the Patriots, it was a disaster, what with the opt-outs, the injuries, Newton at half speed after his brush with Covid and, oh yes, the loss of the greatest quarterback of all time. Still the Patriots were 7-9 and winning seven games with that collection of Jabronis was one of Belichick’s greatest coaching achievements. This season, watch out. With a restocking of the roster with terrific free agency signings, an improved draft and Newton back at full strength, the Patriots will challenge for the AFC title. (Sidebar: The Patriots will move up in the draft and get one of the top quarterback prospects. That prospect — Fields or Jones likely — will learn the system backing up Newton [or supplanting him] in his rookie year and the dynasty will roll on.) All New England fans, myself among them, are excited. Go Patriots.

Fanboys are, cute little, knuckleheads with their deification of the Hoodie. When he finally drafts a Wr that is any good I ll take him seriously. But the fawning over Bill B is just embarrassing for an adult.

  15. Well this will be another disaster in the making. How it is possible that someone so inept as Patricia could evaluate talent is beyond me.

  16. Matt Patricia: Same fashion sense as BB, only less clean and without the actual talent

  17. Some men are born to be generals and some men are born to be foot soldiers.

    __________

In fairness, this post comes from an alternate reality where they did win 9 games and where BB wasn’t the one responsible for them having no stars.

    ————————————
They missed the playoffs in 2002 with Brady at 9-7 and again in 2008 with Brady/Cassell at 11-5. The numbers don’t back you up.

  20. Historically, the Patriots draft classes have been busts. Patricia turned the Lions from playoff contenders to bottom feeders. Why the Patriots would want someone associated with their past failing drafts, and with the Lions nosedive, is beyond me.

Anyone ever thought about comparing Robert Kraft’s massage-gate to Deshaun Watson?

  21. It’s funny how Fanboys get their feelings hurt when chided about their blind devotion to the hoodie…almost like a cult but hey that’s attractive to the masses these days. Glad that BB is letting Mattie share some of the blame for his horrible draft performance….embarrassing.

  22. Matty P is literally the smartest guy in the room.
He Really is a Rocket Scientist. look it up.
With Nick Moving to Houston MP may be the bridge BB needs
Someone who knows the players he wants for their system.
and can work with them as a coach to get the best out of them.
you have Matty and Ernie Adams two of the Smartest guys in the NFL

  23. Here’s the debate about Belichick’s drafting record. Worst GM in the league? Ya, ok. From 2000-2016, Belichick drafted the most Pro Bowlers in the NFL. BB drafted the 4th most 1rst team All Pros in the NFL. Hidden gems in late rnds and UFAs are too numerous to list. Expensive FAs? How about Revis, RColvin and Gilmour, among others. Cheap FAs that save cap room? How about MVrabel and RHarrison, among others. Great trades? How about CDillon, RMoss, Welker, Van Noy, among others. Did I mention the 6 rings? The most wins in the NFL, by a mile? Now Belichick had a bad 3-4 yr run in the draft and free agency. I’ve been calling that out for 2 yrs, although the jury is still out on the last 2 drafts. The Pats, always ahead of the NFL curve, seem to be adjusting. For all the Brady apologists saying it was all about Brady. I’m a huge fan. Put Brady on the Jets the last 5 years. How many rings does he win then? If you said more than 0…

  24. All of you trashing BB’s record undoubtedly know that the average draft position of the NEPats the past two decades has been around 28-29? And that the next lowest number is the Steelers around 16. Keep in mind, all you fans of perennial NFL bottom feeders, that you drafted 20+ spots ahead of NE year after year after year…and the Patriots kicked your butts year after year after year.

  25. Belichick drafted the most Pro Bowlers in the NFL. – the only reason those guys were probowlers was due to TB12 greatly elevating the play of those around him on both sides of the ball. this was on display once again in TB. shoot, he even elevated arians cruddy coaching. other than TB12, no other coach or player has gone on to another team and found any sustained success.

  26. Brady elevated the play of Defense and special teams all these years? Two mainstays of the Pats winning formula? Well, why didn’t somebody tell me? Sorry, someone’s gonna have to explain that one to me. Other than TB12, no other coach or player has gone on to have the 1 year sustained success Brady had? Thanks for the education.

  27. Happy to hear Bill O’Brien has also been hired to be a special advisor for the draft!

In a way what you said helps my argument even more. So you prove that Brady never had a losing record while in New England and that they missed the playoffs a year Brady only played in 1 game (2008). So was it Bill or Tom?

Never mind that Brady continually took a hometown discount, which of course helps build a better roster. In 2012 and 2018, the Pats had two first round picks in each draft. In 2017 and 2018 they traded their 1st round pick away.

  30. The funnest part is you really cannot tell if the pro-Matt Patricia posts are serious or trolling.

  31. I can’t believe the number of people who still think Patricia was ever the D-Coordinator while he worked for Bill.
