Last month, fullback Kyle Juszczyk said in an interview that he absolutely believed Jimmy Garoppolo would be the 49ers starting quarterback in 2021, adding that Garoppolo would get the team back to winning.

And then San Francisco traded up to No. 3 overall.

So during a recent appearance on the Fantasy Footballers podcast, Juszczyk answered the QB question differently since it’s clear the team will be picking one in two weeks.

“As it stands now, Jimmy’s still on the roster,” Juszczyk said, via “So, I anticipate that he’s most likely going to start the season off for us. Don’t know that’s necessarily the case or not, but it’s kind of what I’m envisioning, maybe like the Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes transition. I could see that being feasible, but I don’t know. We’re just going to have to take it in stride, and I’m going to support whoever’s under center, whether it’s Jimmy or a rookie quarterback. I think, either way, we’re going to be successful.”

Juszczyk admitted he was surprised by the trade, while also being excited at the prospect of getting top-tier talent.

But at the same time, he felt for Garoppolo.

“[J]ust from the personal side, Jimmy has been a great friend and a great teammate,” Juszczyk said. “When he’s healthy, he’s been a great player for us. You feel different ways about that, but, at the end of the day, as a player, you just have to put all your faith into Kyle [Shanahan] and [John] Lynch, that they’re making the best decision for the team.”

  1. What else can he say? His position is all but obsolete. He is elite at his position, but there isn’t a great demand for expensive full backs. I think there are like 3 other teams that keep one on their roster.

  2. Juice puts his trust in his coach. Whoever the coach starts at the quarterback position, he still has to perform. Last season Shanahan started Mullins and also Beathard for most of the games. Juice still has to perform. He is not going to sulk if Jimmy G. is not starting. That is for sure.

Further, we do not even know which quarterback the 49ers are going to draft, and whether he will be installed as the starter or not. One thing is certain. Whoever the 49ers draft, there will be some in the media who will be trashing him non-stop for years to come. Even Steve Young was criticized for not being a pocket passer, even though he made the hall of fame. Now they are criticizing Jimmy G. for not scrambling. When the niners had Kap, some in the media criticized him too, not because he was not scrambling, but because he is not a good pocket passer. Whether they draft a scrambling QB or a pocket passer, the draftee will be trashed. Young, Kap and Jimmy G. are the only 3 quarterbacks besides Joe Montana who took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, out of the dozens who have played for the team. The media still trashed them all one way or another anyway.

  3. John Lynch iand Kyle brought in a lot of good character guys like “Juice” who love football and are all about the TEAM. The locker room will be fine.

Jimmy G wins games at an amazing clip but he’s just not dependable to play every week. That’s why they got rid of Trent Brown. Kyle and John want tough dependable guys who you will never know that they’re banged up or injured unless it’s severe and/or obvious, the type of player that has the mentality to playsthrough injures and you have to drag off the field. You know, like Justin Fields in the college playoffs. Played against Alabama banged up and I haven’t heard one injury excuse from him.

  4. When you go back and look at highlight videos of all the top prospects this year… and then go look at highlights from Garappolo’s 2019 year… it isn’t close.

Garappolo is head and shoulders above any pick in this draft.

He’ll be the opening day starter this season for the 49ers.
