Grant Delpit hopes to give Browns fans what they want after missing rookie year

The Browns turned in their best season in a long time in 2020 and they did it without the help of a player they planned on filling a big role on defense.

Safety Grant Delpit joined the team as a second-round pick after a standout career at LSU, but he tore his Achilles in August and missed the entire season. He said it was tough to be “forced to sit back and watch” after working his entire life to get to the NFL and that he’s spent the past year “doing everything I can to get on the field” this time around.

“It’s been a long time coming, but hopefully I can give the fans what they want, give myself what I want and what my family wants,” Delpit said, via the team’s website.

The Browns signed John Johnson and they have Ronnie Harrison back after trading for him in the wake of Delpit’s injury, so it will be a deep safety group if Delpit makes it all the way back to form.

  1. Time moves fast. Young players heal quickly. Delpit is like having a bonus first round pick this year. Plus, he already knows the playbook. The Browns scared a lot people last year. They’re much better this year. They are definitely contending for the heavyweight crown.

  2. Browns D in general, and secondary in particular, will be completely changed in 2021 vs. 2020. If Delpit’s play reflects his draft pedigree, the safeties will be the strength of the Defense. Imagine that: their best safety from 2020 (Harrison), will be the 3rd safety in 2021!

  3. Browns need to draft another player that can get pressure after releasing Sheldon Richardson… They need that interior pressure from somewhere, that’s how Myles Garret operates tans intimidates quarterbacks off the edges ..

  4. Rooting for this kid, but Johnson was a hedge against Delpit’s recovery. Still waiting to see what they do as a hedge to Greedy Williams recovery, which is much more in doubt and at a more important position.

  5. Joe Woods’ preferred base defense is a nickel with 3 safeties. Johnson, Harrison, and Delpit should all see plenty of playing time.

The Browns finished the regular season 11-5, but were 3-4 against teams that would finish the season with at least a .500 record. Yeah, they scared a lot of people. SMH. Even the 2-14 Jets had a win against the Browns.

  7. @Christopher Allan

They got 11 wins with one of the worst defenses in the league statistically. They spent significantly in free agency upgrading the D and hope to get a couple of high draft picks back from injury that missed all of last season. I’m not ready to say they are ready to contend for a Super Bowl, but credit to the front office for addressing significant needs. They damn near beat the Chiefs in the second round, again with a pretty bad D.
