One of the difficulties for NFL teams as they prepare for this year’s draft has been evaluating players who opted out of playing in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a press conference on Thursday, Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman said that he’s never had to deal with circumstances like this throughout his career in the NFL. He said he’s tried to evaluate older film of players the same way he does with other prospects and that he’s asked players about their decision during video meetings in order to get the fullest possible picture.

Gettleman’s also seen some of them work out at Pro Days around the country and their conditioning after being away from the field has been enlightening in some cases. He said some prospects “looked like me” and noted that “wasn’t good” for their scouting report.

Other teams are doing the same kind of work and it will be interesting to look back in a couple of years to see which of them did the best job of finding useful players after sitting out the 2020 season.

  1. The question is, would they draft better than you, Dave? More than likely considering your awful drafting record. Dave Gettleman, the used cars salesman of GM’s.

  2. in today’s world, isnt everyone entitled to play in the nfl. you cant not draft someone just because they opted out.

  3. BB will once again have another great draft because he knows things other GMs like Gettlman do not!

  4. If you opted out and then fall in the draft, or miss out on the NFL entirely… no one to blame but the man in the mirror. A harsh reality about to set in for some of these kids

  5. Being able to make fun of yourself is a rare and refreshing attitude to have. The world would be a better place if more people shared Dave Gettleman’s confidence and sense of humor.

  6. Players who opted out would not be on my draft board. I want players who love playing football.

  7. How do you show up to a pro day in bad shape? You’ve had all year to do nothing but workout and prepare for this opportunity

  8. I’m sure with David “Football” Gettleman, players looking like him vaults them up his draft board. Dollars to doughnuts (mmm… doughnuts), he will be taking those guys because NOBODY fleeces David “Football” Gettleman!

  9. I would argue this is a good thing… you get to see which guys are disciplined and which ones aren’t.

  10. I think there will be a lot of salty old timers that think sitting out to preserve your ability to make millions means you don’t love football. I wouldn’t worry about that so much, but I would worry that if a guy sat out and didn’t get in even better shape than when he was playing that he probably won’t be able to work so hard once he gets that payday. You’ve had all year to get yourself ready, if you can’t do that you probably can’t do it in the NFL either.

  11. Dave, with your drafting acumen, to you EVERYONE attending pro days must look like you….

    Frankly, I don’t believe him. I think it’s a lie.
Agree . With the draft being under such a microscope for so many months with so many pro days and this is the first time somebody mentions this . Thinking this is just an old school narrow minded dinosaur taking a shot at players who opted out by making this bogus claim .

  13. Yes, and some of the players who played and got Covid, could look like you before they turn 40.
