Duke Tobin: Bengals will talk trading down, but we’re in position for premier talent

When the draft gets underway next week, quarterbacks are expected to come off the board with the first three picks.

It’s harder to predict where things will go from there, but players like wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, tight end Kyle Pitts, and tackle Penei Sewell could generate trade interest once that run on signal callers comes to an end. With the fifth overall pick, the Bengals could cash in on that interest but that’s far from a sure thing.

Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said Wednesday that the team will listen to calls, but that the expectation heading into the draft is that the Bengals will land a player who will “come in and help us win immediately and play a big role.”

“We have discussions with teams all the time about potentials and are you willing to talk about it,” Tobin said, via the team’s website. “Yeah, we’re willing to talk about it. It has to be right. I don’t anticipate going down to a point where we’re losing the level of player we’re looking at right now. I think we’re in a good spot in this draft to get one of the guys who is a premier talent.”

Any of the three players mentioned above would fulfill the mission of surrounding quarterback Joe Burrow with talent and the Bengals will be in position to land one of them. We’re a week away from knowing just what they’ll decide to do at the top of the draft.

  1. It’s imperative the Bengals draft O Linemen to protect Joe Burrow. I usually lecture myself about stating the obvious 🙄 but, in this case, I’m gonna go ahead anyway. It’s a QB-driven league and Burrow has shown he’s a good one so every Bengal’s draft choice this year should be someone to shore up the Cincinnati OLine. Now you see why I’m not an NFL GM. 🤣🤣🤣

  2. Of course they will because they are stupid.

Just draft Sewell at 5, dumb teams complicating simple actions.

  3. Mike Brown and Co have the Chevy Malibu all gassed up and ready to go!

Bottom 1/3 roster in the league: what’s left when you take out Burrow, Mixon, Higgins, Bates and Hubbard?

    Answer: Not much.

TRADE DOWN Duke….. you need to widen your margin of error as much as possible.

QB rich draft in a QB driven league with a boat load of teams that need a QB….Mike and Co, “We’ll just stay here”

    The Idiocy will never end.

  4. Trade down for 2 additional picks is the right move. That team needs more than one premier player.

  5. It would be great for them if they can trade down far enough to still get Rashawn Slater. Or even still get Penei Sewell. Who knows with all these QBs and the receivers?

But don’t get me wrong, I HOPE they mess it up badly. LOL

If they have Slater as a close comp to Sewell, then I could see them trading down, especially if 4QBs go before them. In my mind they need to wind up with either Sewell, Slater, Pitts or Chase. The problem is that if 4 qbs go before them, their pick isn’t as valuable to a QB needy team and if 3 QBs go it means one of the 4 top players is off the board so they can’t slide far.
