Patriots voted against jersey number change

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are back on the same page.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Patriots were one of a handful of teams to vote against the rule that dramatically expands the available jersey numbers to linebackers, defensive backs, running backs, receivers, and tight ends. Coach Bill Belichick, per the source, hates the new rule.

So does Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who was silent about it before the rule was passed but who has railed about it since the owners voted to adopt it on Wednesday.

It’s believed that four or five teams voted against the rule. Nine “no” votes were needed to kill the rule.

As Peter King noted on Friday’s PFT Live, the Chiefs never would have proposed the rule if coach Andy Reid believed that the rule would create any sort of strategic disadvantage for offenses whose players may be confused by the positions played by players who are aligned in creative and unpredictable ways.

  1. If you’re defense is confused by what jersey numbers the other team is wearing, you’ve got more serious issues to worry about

    Does it maybe lend it self more to a mobile QB like Mahomes who can simplify protections? Therefore it gives an advantage to the KC D against Brady but not vice versa? Just a guess.

  3. Question is if Gronk, can switch to his favorite number. If that’s not part of this, it’s a waste of everyone’s time.

  4. I think from Bill’s perspective its probably more about tradition and the old school way of thought.

    Players are pretty good about adapting to things like this and knowing who’s who on the other side of the LOS, so in most games I don’t see it being a problem. Maybe more for rookie QBs than anyone else.

  5. Belichick might not have been in favor of the change, but now that it’s a rule he’ll figure out a way to exploit it (and then the league will reverse course).

  6. I suspect Belichick’s input to the Patriots vote wasn’t strategic and was more about preserving tradition.

    Bill suggested the change in the conversion to a greater distance to make the game more competitive. The numbers change is all about “I”, not “team”.

  7. It is stupid to change positional player numbers. I ask… what can be gain from this? I grew up watching players and identifying players by number schemes.

    I see no reason for the change other than vanity by skilled positional players who want to further their Diva status.

    It will be interesting to see how many MLB change to #10…. lol… stupid rule change in a game that is becoming more and more watered down each season.

  8. This is only because Bill will now have to redo his whole video cheating system.

    Again the rule change benefits the game how????

    ~~~
    If you are a Cheifs fan hoping for a Super Bowl rematch, it hampers Brady who is one of the best at pre-snap defensive reads while not impacting your QB.
  10. THIS is what the NFL pushes through in a flash. God forbid they get on field calls that ruin a teams season correct. Nope, can’t have that!
  11. Obviously BB is familiar with all the rule changes that have occurred in NFL history, likely more so than anyone living or dead. Some he has probably liked, many he has probably not liked. I am actually surprised he cares about this one, even as the #1 Football Historian, but as others have pointed out he may very well find ways to take advantage of the change.
  12. When you are the one out of 32 teams whos vote was considered newsworthy of its own article, you know they still fear you.
    Brady’s gone. Mr. 7-9’s days of “exploiting” the NFL are done.
    I’m sure you’ll be able to learn players’ new numbers. This is such a nothing change that people are getting worked up about. Don’t see how this qualifies as “watering down” the game.
  15. Isn’t Bill the one who has the players wear different jersey numbers in practice?
    Yes, but lately no jersey numbers at all. Been ahead of the curve for years. Teams too jealous to copy. lol
  17. Gronk cannot switch to 69 or he already would have LOL. I dislike this rule, because I’m old and don’t like change.
    From a Defensive perspective it doesnt really matter if Tyreek wears 10 or 88 either way you keep track of him. From Tom’s perspective it would be harder to identify LB’s and DB’s. I honestly don’t think it changes much other than that.
    Hearing BB doesn’t use numbers in practise is brilliant. Block the position not the number. Well played.
  18. I’m far from an NFL savant but aren’t a QB’s reads based on the opposing players location on the field and not their assigned number?
  19. rewards pure athletic talent of team at expense of preparation, team cohesiveness, and mental aspects of the game where belichick and brady excel. fans, league don’t care that much if it’s bad football because it won’t be recognized as such. raw athletic displays include chaotic action – oh and turn up the ear-shattering stadium “music” while you’re at it.
  20. I think the teams’ jerseys are different colors when they play. I don’t see the problem.
  21. As long as we’re on the subject of jerseys, Let’s bring back “He Hate Me”.
