Kyle Shanahan: No guarantee Jimmy Garoppolo will be alive or on roster Sunday

The 49ers are set to take a new quarterback with the third overall pick in this week’s draft and that player will be on the roster come the start of the regular season.

It’s less clear whether Jimmy Garoppolo will be joining him.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said at a Monday press conference that the incumbent starter’s issues staying healthy contributed to the 49ers’ decision to trade up with the Dolphins and that he thinks that the team would be “fortunate” to have Garoppolo on hand while adding a rookie. He wouldn’t come close to guaranteeing the rookie and Garoppolo will be teammates, however.

“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive on Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday,” Shanahan said.

For the time being, Garoppolo is alive, on the 49ers roster, and, per General Manager John Lynch, handling the situation as well as possible.

“Jimmy’s been a pro,” Lynch said. “He really has. I just spoke to him over the weekend. He’s here, he’s taking part in our virtual meetings, plans on being at the workouts. Jimmy’s been completely professional as he always has been with us.”

Garoppolo’s current salary won’t make a trade easy to pull off and they may prefer to give the rookie time to transition to the NFL, but the right offer from another team might change that outlook for the 49ers.

  1. Translation: “In my mind he is already gone…we need a guy who can give us more than 4-6 games per season”

  2. What kind of statement is that? Was he trying to be all Bill Parcells in the interview because he doesn’t want to answer the question? Just weird.

  3. Savage. I am going to start answering questions in this manner. “I can’t even guarantee I’ll be alive that day, so no, I can’t commit to go antiquing with you, Ethel.”

  4. I have to agree, what the heck kind of answer is this? Jimmy is a goner but the phrasing is just so odd. This guys is an odd duck.

  5. There is really only one certainty in the NFL: Head coaches are born to be fired. They are a dime a dozen

  6. No one can guarantee Kyle will be alive if his uber risky draft 2021 trade doesn’t pan out. He may be sleeping with the fish. But for now, he’s on the roster as Head (case) Coach.

  7. The question that should be asked is does Jed pull the plug if the QB they select is a bust. It looks like no matter what, who is ever selected will be the starter from day one in a complex offense and at least expected to win the NFC West.

  8. Spending two additional first-round picks, plus another 3rd, to trade up to pick a QB that would’ve almost certainly been there later is a serious blunder.

If we’re to take Kyle Shanahan at his word, that he thinks they could win with any of the top five QBs, then why in the hell did you trade up so early and at such a huge cost?

If the pick turns out to be Mac Jones, who I suspect has been Shanahan’s pick all the way, the 49ers could’ve picked him at 12.

  9. Pretty obvious now that there are handshake deals with Minnesota and NE. Cousins to SF and Jimmy G to NE for their 2nd rounder (46th overall). Gonna be interesting to see who the Vikings pick at #3.

  10. Just like there’s no guarantee a coach will run the ball when ahead in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, eh Kyle?

  11. Jimmy G is not the only one who choked the Super Bowl away for the 49’s. Shanahan panicked and started calling all these pass plays lets dont forget when the running game was destroying the Chiefs. Also, at the end of the first half, Shanahan got all conservative ( scared) . These were not Jimmy G decisions. I wish Jimmy G well

  12. Just pick up some of the salary and trade him to NE for a #2. The Pats are paying Cam like a backup (bc he plays like one) and I think BB will break out in hives if he gets close to trading up for a qb.

  13. Better hope nothing unseemly happens to Garoppolo in the next few days or you’re well in the frame.

  14. Shannahan is not head coach material. Losing record thru four season. A glorified play caller
    GoRams!

  15. Jimmy G isnt as bad as the 49ers think he is, they will regret drafting a new guy. How in the heck do they know a college kid is any good? Ever hear of Tebow? how’d that work out?

  16. Stating the obvious. There is no guarantee in life. Nevertheless it is almost guaranteed that 3 of the top 5, namely Mac Jones, Trevor Lawrence and Zach WIlson will be available when Frisco picks, unless of course something happens to one or more of them.

  17. There’s an arrogance to this guy, and I have to believe it won’t be long before it all blows up and him and Lynch both will get the axe…

And yet he repeatedly sweeps the Rams with half his roster on IR!…….. LOL

  19. Here’s how to handle the situation:

    1. Lynch knows what teams are interested in Jimmy. Ask him which of those teams he is wIlling to play.

    2. Ask if he would be willing to restructure his contract.

    3. Agree with the teams on compensation if they can cone to contract terms with Garoppolo.

    4. Don’t be piggy. Ask for a 3rd round and 6th round pick.

    Done deal.

  20. If I am JimmyG, I start asking why they stopped running the ball in the sb at 6 ypc with both rbs and a lead.

These little daddy’s boy coaches try to get too cute and then think they aren’t to be held accountable.

  21. He’s looking for “the guy”, and Jimmy G ain’t it. Not sure why this is a story. Isn’t that how you’re supposed to build a team?

  22. Sounds like Kyle Shannahan is fixing to put a hit on poor Jimmy. Jimmy better watch his back.

  23. I wouldn’t be shocked if the 49ers trade out of #3. They could move back a couple slots, pick up an extra #1, and still get the QB they want.

  24. I said it a few weeks ago: Denver trades San Francisco the #9 pick for Jimmy Garappolo and a third round pick. Denver gets the veteran QB it desperately needs under contract for 2 seasons and still has 3 picks in the next 2 rounds. San Francisco can draft Mac Jones at #3 and take whichever CB between Surtain, Horn, and Farley is left on the board at 9. Broncos GM George Paton was a big force in getting Kirk Cousins to the Vikings and might prefer veterans over rookies, so look for Elway to call his best buddy Lynch and swing a deal for Denver.

  25. I don’t care much for the Niners but there are a lot of stupid comments on here. Shanahan is a very good offensive coach and even better at making a crap QB look good. Weird comment about JG but the point is he made JG look good while being bad and including he only plays 6 games a year due to injury Shanahan knows he can get a smart QB in Jones who can excel in his offense.

  26. How is he better at making a crap QB look good? Take a look at their record when Jimmy has been out. Terrible, just terrible. The coach and apparently you think he’s better than history has shown us.

Complex offense?! Handoff, handoff, play-action pass to a crossing or curl route to a TE?… Doesn’t get much easier than that.

  28. Jimmy Garoppolo being traded before and/or during or soon after this Thursday’s draft are starting again.

    Thanks Kyle.

Do you ever think? That’s a serious question because it doesn’t appear so.
