Kyle Shanahan: “Irresponsible” to listen to outside opinions on No. 3 pick

Everyone paying attention to the NFL Draft is curious about what the 49ers will do with the third overall pick and many of those people have a strong opinion about which quarterback the team should select.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that those people have not been shy about sharing those opinions when he’s been out to eat or at his kids’ soccer matches. He also said that neither those opinions nor the potential for a negative reaction from 49ers fans will be factors in the team’s process.

“It is so irresponsible to let something like that affect your decision,” Shanahan said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “We do this for a living and people should be proud of us that we won’t let that affect our decision. And then it’s up to us to live with the consequences.”

Shanahan said it’s “a little dramatic” to call the trade up to No. 3 the boldest move in 49ers history, but, blinders on or not, Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch are going to have plenty riding on how well Thursday night’s choice fares in the NFL.

  1. Maybe this time, dont pass on a probable HOF QB for an average DL like 4 years ago.

  2. Careful Kyle. 9 times out of 10, the fans are RIGHT. Wanna know why? Because we just watch the tape. And 9 times out of 10, the tape doesn’t like.

It’s you hot shot coaches and GMs who lose your way during the process and get caught up in the nonsense like Ryan Pace did in 2017 when he took Trubisky out for a steak dinner and and chose to draft him because he was “charmed” by Mitch’s Toyota Camry.

So charmed he wouldn’t even shell out 5 bucks to take Mahomes out for a Happy Meal.

  3. superfanentertainment is right. My wife drove a Toyota Camry before I met her and nowadays we have as much fun as a freaking nun. Almost.

  4. I love Mac Jones. He’s a genius. Graduated in 3 years with a Masters playing college football at the highest level and put up historic numbers. Only a brilliantly gifted individual is capable of doing that… He has a photographic memory. What other QB on the planet can ace the playbook in 3 weeks go to the film room during the week and study defensive tendencies then file it away for Sunday and dial it up at flash drive speed in the moment? None of them…

But an immobile pocket QB must be protected and if Kyle cannot protect him Jones plays the game with one and tied behind his back. And any off platform QB will out play him..

It’s very simple.. Protect Mac well enough so he can execute Kyle’s scheme and and you have an offense that cannot be stopped. Fail to protect him and you have a more accurate Jimmy 2.0.. The bottom line with Jones as the Pick is pass protection.. And I ask,, with Mike McGlinchey spending most of last season getting pushed around or flat on his back how can that line possibly consistently protect Mac Jones?

  5. “ We do this for a living and people should be proud of us…”
    —-

It’s official. McVay has been dethroned by Shanahan as the most pretentious and insufferable HC in the NFC.

  6. Of course it is nuts to listen to outsiders as to who to pick. Outsiders do not always have the best interest of the 49ers at heart. Even if they do want the 49ers to succeed, they should not try to bully the 49ers into picking the one they advocate. They have no idea what kind of quarterback Shanahan wants or thinks is best for his system. If outsiders screw up, they won’t get fired by the 49ers. Shanahan will decide for himself. If he succeeds, he takes the credit, and if he fails, he will accept the blame.

  7. Ha! Kyle was in the room when Jimmy Haslam made Ray Farmer pick Johnny (Billy) Manziel because some homeless guy told him to do it! At least he learned one thing from his short time in CLE.

  8. They don’t listen to what fans think, but it’s dishonest to say they ignore outside parties. Most coaches and GMs are often swayed by the media, and league group think, when ranking players. That is why first round projections are so similar and there are so many first round busts.

  9. You don’t win superbowls with game managers. Kyle mentions Drew Brees as his pro typical QB, butas great as Brees was in the regular season, he couldn’t win in January. Even the one Super Bowl the Saints won it was done on the backs of the special teams and defense.

It’s going to be a mistake drafting Mac Jones over Justin Fields. I’ve seen this pattern many a times. In 3-4 years they will talk about this Mac Jones draft pick as the pick that set the franchise back for x amount of years.

Justin Fields most likely end up with New England, and for what everybody said about him during this process he’s going to raise hell to the surface and set the whole league on fire, and the heat of the flames will touch the 49ers. This is good for the NFL because Belichick and Urban Meyer & Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence will have a rivalry for AFC supremacy. In the immortal words of the legendary 49er Terrell Owens…..Get your popcorn ready.

  10. Jimmy was healthy one year. Niners went to the ship. If this pick is even remotely capable of running Kyle’s offense, Niners contend for NFC West title.

The Niners have a stout defense. Nobody is talking about how they upgraded their D Line and pass rush. They go corner-corner with 2nd and 3rd rd picks and they’re a pretty legit squad

  11. ““We do this for a living and people should be proud of us that we won’t let that affect our decision.”
    ___________

People should be proud that they actually do their extremely well-paying jobs?

  12. What’s irresponsible is blowing 2 SBs and then acting like you aren’t accountable when you did the same thing, which is throwing too much.

    sure, sure

    it’s just that simple

you have a bb-groomed qb whose oc failed with playcalls (again) in the sb to lose it, and you want to dump the guy

  14. He comes off as pompous, but what kind of tool approaches him at a kids soccer game to give advice on draft choices?

  15. lol why should I or we be proud of someone who gets paid and insane amount of money for coaching or playing a game? I’ve never heard video gamers saying they are proud of the Sony Executive for developing a new play station version —
seems he says more egotistical defensive statements the more he is being questioned or challenged

  16. When Mike and Kyle Shanahan get together for family gatherings do you think pretends to be the smartest person in the room more?

  17. With at least 2 and maybe 3 of the 5 QB’s picked in the first round will be busts, Shanahan and Lynch should be more worried about picking someone with NFL talent because history shows it is a crapshoot at drafting QB’s. Just look at the 2018 draft with Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson being the only none bust picks and most of the pundits didn’t like those two. Baker looks to be at best a mediocre QB and a bust for the 1st pick, Rosen was an epic bust and Darnold simply isn’t that good.

  18. Doesn’t matter who they pick if the coaches can’t put the players in a position to be successful then it’s a mute point

Monday Morning QB with revisionist history here. As hard as it is to believe, Mahomes wasn’t expected to go in top 10 at that time. So clearly no one, including you, thought they had a future hall of famer until
    Andy Reid decided.

  20. The pressure is beginning to build and Shanahan is starting to crack with his most recent comments. Lynch may want to get in front of this for the next few days and take some of the heat off his coach before he has a public aneurysm.

  21. Absolutely. As much as the movie “draft day” gets negatively panned Kevin Costner had it right. “Mack no matter what.” Don’t over think this shannahan. There is a specific guy you want and that’s why you traded what you did. Take the guy that you believe in with your heart and soul.

  22. “Ha! Kyle was in the room when Jimmy Haslam made Ray Farmer pick Johnny (Billy) Manziel because some homeless guy told him to do it”

You do realize that the homeless guy thing never happened, right? Totally fabricated story that has persisted over the years.

Jimmy had wide open receivers on the 4 & out drive with two mins left. Kyle called it right, Jimmy came up small. Watch the tape. There are plenty of YouTube vids outlining the above take

  24. Can’t wait for it to be Pitts and nobody saw it coming…

    John Lynch 2/24/21 said….
“I’ve watched people go through this in their careers where they struggled,” Lynch shared. “It happened to me early, and then I went eight years without missing a practice. So, I believe that things can happen. I believe they will for him, and I really believe that Jimmy is our guy.”

Added Lynch: “We are seriously looking forward to kind of rebooting our team and making a run at this thing next year. And I believe we’ve got what it takes to compete for a championship. We’ve got to add to it, we’ve got to improve, but I’m excited about that opportunity.”

  25. Crash and burn coming. I havent felt this awful knowing the 9ers were going to botch a qb pick since Drukenmiller.

  26. Shanahan isn’t “cracking” under the pressure…and he knows who he will pick. But he’s a smart guy and he will NOT tip his hand before the draft.

Even saying what his plas are for Garoppolo gives information to the other teams about his intentions in the draft.

So Shanahan has to lie or give nonsense answers, like he did the other day.

  27. Irresponsible? Like bringing your Super Bowl game plan to media day where there is absolutely no time to discuss with your players or other coaches or work on it, and leaving it unattended so that a member of the media accidentally picks it up and walks off with it?

    That kind of irresponsible?

  28. If your a coach and you listen to the fans, pretty soon you’ll just be one of them.

  29. Kyle has not been right in the head since the Dynastic Patriots destroyed his clever little playbook. The definition of pretentious is passing with a 28-3 lead. The Patriots were happy to strip sack is QB and begin greatest comeback for the ages.

    Greetings from New England Loser

  30. I love that fans and the media are upset they don’t get a say. All these sportswriters sitting indignant that Shanahan doesn’t listen to them. Too funny.

You do realize that the homeless guy thing never happened, right? Totally fabricated story that has persisted over the years.

    =====================================================================================

You do realize that Jimmy Haslam himself admitted the story was true, right? If you can read, see his actual quote below:

“Here in Cleveland, every where I go people know me,” Paolantonio reported Haslam said. “And I was out to dinner recently and a homeless person was out on the street, looked up at me and said ‘Draft Manziel.'”

  33. So your organization (which has won nothing in years and years) knows better than everybody…

This thinking is why the 49ers, cowboys, falcons, and lions will never win anything.

  34. No it is irresponsible to mortgage the teams future on a QB when most of the legends for that position come in the later rounds. Since you have already moved up you might as well go ahead and grab Pitts. (years from now you will sorry you did not) If you do then, you would have a nightmare for teams to cover against two outstanding TE’s along with the WR’s.

    ________________________________________________________________________

You really think the son of a multiple SB winning coordinator and coach doesn’t “watch the tape” more than the average fan? This guy was “watching the tape” when you were picking boogers.

    This is lunacy.

  36. It’s also irresponsible to talk about the life and death of your current QB so nonchalantly.

  37. If/When Shanahan is fired in the not too distant future, this will be the reason.

This is his career decision, and his future is riding on Mac Jones. 3 first round picks and a 3rd round pick for Mac Jones.

Looking at The Draft Network prospect rankings, Mac Jones is ranked #65. 3rd round. Maybe that’s unrealistic- he’d probably go sooner than that if the 9ers didn’t take him 3rd overall, but that’s at least 2 first-round picks too much for Jones, who’d have been there at #12 for the 49ers.

Massive blunder for the 9ers, who’ll be living this down for years to come.

  38. Irresponsible would be giving up two 1st round picks to draft a guy that would likely be there where you originally were picking. Irresponsible would be giving up two 1st round picks despite the fact that statistically speaking only 40% of 1st round pics are successful in the 1st place. But hey we all might be dead by Sunday so what’s the difference

  39. How can he know who to draft? You can’t know who will still be alive after draft day.

  42. As much as he can be annoying, as far as his statement goes, he’s right. He knows who he wants, and is prepared to live with the consequences. The rest is just noise, and it would be football malpractice to listen to it.

  43. Kyle is right, but why would he waste the time even talking about that. If outside opinions bother you, I’m thinking pro football is the wrong business to be in. There’s millions of guys like me out here that have an opinion on everything. I certainly don’t expect a coach to pay any attention to my ideas. Lord help him if he does.

  44. I do wonder if coaches and GMs think “is this a guy I’m comfortable with getting me fired” when they make a pick.

Brees was 32/39 for 288 Yards and 2 TDs with a 114 QBR in that SB. He was also the SB MVP. The playoffs to get there, 8 TDs/0 INTs and a 117 QBR. To get to the playoffs, Brees passed for 4,288 yards and led the league in completion percentage (which was also an NFL record) and TD passes (35). Did I mention that he also sat out the last game of the season? Pro Bowl selection … runner-up for league offensive MVP.

BB groomed guy missed a lot of great opportunities not counting the egregious miss to Sanders that would have put us ahead. Despite having a good year Jimmy G didn’t see LB and missed on big opportunities that Shanahan dialed up.
Who exactly has BB groomed who has been successful other than Brady. It’s questionable how much he groomed him.

  47. I imagine they are not calling him jimmie g.now. James pulled a slow motion matt flynn.
