Rick Spielman on drafting a QB: No position is off limits

The Vikings signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to a contract extension through the 2022 season last year and he has $56 million in guaranteed salary coming his way the next two seasons, so there’s not much chance that they’ll be moving on from him before the deal is up.

One way to open the door for a change in 2023 would be to develop a quarterback behind Cousins. Drafting one this year would set such a plan in motion and General Manager Rick Spielman was asked about the possibility during a Tuesday press conference.

“There is no position that is off limits going into this draft,” Spielman said.

The Vikings have 10 picks in this year’s draft, so they’ll have plenty of opportunities to take a quarterback if they stand pat. Afte they pick at No. 14, they aren’t slated to pick again until No. 78 unless Spielman makes some moves to change their hand later this week.

  1. If they draft a QB I hope he marries a gal like Kirk did – you know, one who demands he wear his wedding ring during the game so he can focus on her. That’d be great for the rest of the NFCN.

  2. Kirk and Matt Flynn could hold a seminar on how to secure a massive pay day, without ever performing up to a level tha th deserves it. Vikings refuse to admit a mistake and cousins will finish his time there making probably over 150 million and not winning a playoff game.

  3. Watching Rick try to pick a QB is like watching Charles Barkley try to hit a golf ball.

Both are hilarious as long as they’re not on your team.

  4. I think the fact that they currently have no number two QB on the roster is telling. And it will be interesting to see how cousins reacts if and when they do draft a QB this weekend.

  5. I’m quite sure Slick Rick is eager to dip his toe back into the QB draft pool.
I mean, he’s had so much success with it in the past. 🤣

Oops! Best to fact check before posting next time.

  7. People keep saying if San Fran goes Lance or Fields at 3 then Jones will be a prime target of the Patriots at 15. Uh, I don’t think Jones will get past 14. Everyone sleeping on the Vikings in the QB hunt. Cousins contract expires next year. It would make sense to get his replacement now.

    “Ruh-roh.”

Is that why you live in MN to be close to Cousins? There isn’t a day that goes by that you don’t talk about him.

  9. Cousins is earning his pay. He is the best game-manager in the NFL, and is there really anything wrong with that? His compensation is no longer newsworthy. He is not among the top-ten playmaking and game-changing quarterbacks……….everybody knows it. But so what? What about all the quarterbacks that aren’t difference-makers? “The Best of the Rest?” He’s it, and he earns and deserves his pay.
