Will 49ers trade Jimmy Garoppolo this weekend?

The 49ers will add a quarterback tomorrow night with the third overall selection in the draft. Will they subtract one before the end of the coming weekend?

Speculation has intensified in recent days that the 49ers will trade Jimmy Garoppolo before or during the draft. Peter King dusted off the subject in Monday’s Football Morning in America column. Jason La Canfora of CBS followed Peter’s item with word of a “strong expectation” among General Managers that the 49ers will try to make a deal.

Potential trade partners include the Patriots, the Texans, and maybe the Bears.

Two key components will be part of any trade. First, and obviously, the 49ers will have to find a suitor who will give San Francisco the compensation that it wants. Second, the new team will need to strike a deal with Garoppolo as to his compensation for 2021, and whether he’ll get an extension or (like Teddy Bridgewater in Denver) a path to free agency after the 2021 season.

The strategic question for the 49ers becomes whether they’re willing to wait for a better market to develop later, if for example a starting quarterback elsewhere suffers an injury. However, waiting for a preseason ACL tear or broken leg would entail risking that the oft-injured Garoppolo will get injured, sticking the 49ers with his full $24.1 million salary for 2021.

A separate problem comes from the possibility of Garoppolo playing, staying healthy, and playing well in 2021. If he’s the Week One starter, whether because he wins the job or the rookie is injured, the 49ers may have a hard time flipping in 2022 to the rookie for who they will have given up the 12th overall pick, two future first-rounders, and a third-rounder.

Arguably, the team’s decision to express indecision (feigned or otherwise) regarding whether they’ll take Mac Jones or Justin Fields or Trey Lance makes it more important to not let a lingering Garoppolo keep the rookie on the bench. As recently explained on PFT Live, the 49ers are the guy who took out a second mortgage to buy a Ferrari. Then, when he got to the exotic car dealership, he started looking at the Porsche and the Aston-Martin. Then, he drove all three. Then, he agonized over which one to take.

Then, he made a selection. Then, his neighbors bought the other two cars. And they drive them by his house regularly.

If the two guys the 49ers don’t take are playing well elsewhere, and if the player drafted by the 49ers gets stuck behind Garoppolo, that won’t go over well with the paying customers. And for good reason. Fans and media will say that the 49ers wasted draft picks that could have been used to acquire four other players over the next three drafts.

Even if they still buy the Ferarri, the 49ers have to worry that they bought the lemon. If the Ferarri can’t even get out of the garage because the jalopy they wanted to get rid of is finally running well, the necessarily will cause Ferrari to be regarded as a purchase.

The 49ers have seemed indecisive about the player they’ll take at No. 3. They can’t afford to be indecisive about Garoppolo. They made a big move because they don’t trust Garoppolo over the long-term. They shouldn’t trust him over the short-term, either.

  1. Shanahan and Lynch have already shown they dont really care about public perception.
I dont see that keeping Garopollo on the roster is going to make them uneasy

  2. Garoppolo will be a Chicago Bear by Friday morning. Garoppolo will be happy to go home to Arlington Heights and instantly become the greatest Bears QB ever without having played a down.

  3. Houston is definitely in need of a QB for this season. Roger will suspend Watson and free up that cap space to trade for Jimmy G
    Problem solved short term.

  4. My guess is to a Chicago for a 2023 1st. Nagy and Pace know they are fired after the year if they don’t make the playoffs anyway. They can’t possibly think Dalton is the guy to save their job.

  5. Jimmy glass is going back to pats bill is in desperation mode!!! TB12 is showing everyone that bill is the same coach that coached Cleveland yrs back..mediocre without TB12

  6. Would it really be that horrible if Jimmy started and played well? Do you think the Eagles would give back the Lombardi they won with Foles?

  7. Niners aren’t taking any less than a mid first round pick for JimmyG. If they don’t get that, they’ll pick up his option. The have plenty of cap space, and whether or not they draft Lance or Jones Jimmy will be the starter this year if they don’t get a first round pick. I’m sure Lynch and Shanahan are fine with that.

  8. You left one important factor out. Jimmy G has a no trade clause in his contract. Therefore he has to approve who he gets traded to. Can’t imagine he’d want to go to Houston. I say Pats or possibly Chicago.

Fact is EVERY coach is mediocre without a franchise-type QB. That is what the league has become.

  10. In a word. No. People who want him traded just want the 49ers to give up any hope of winning the SUper Bowl even before the season begins. They are rooting for failure. His salary is not outrageous. It is $15 million less than Dak Prescott’s and it is $10 million less than what Jared Goff and Russell Wilson are making. Further, if the rookie quarterback they draft gets hurt and is out for the season, then they have nobody to start for them. Frisco is, according to oddsmakers, among the top teams in the run for a Super Bowl win. They therefore have a much higher opinion of Jimmy G. then the people who want him out of the Bay Area.

  11. That would unwise.
I just can’t see handing this team over to a rookie.

Look Dan Marino’s spectacular rookie year and I hope everybody remembers that.
Dan failed to get to the SB. He lost to the Seahawks in the Divisional round.

    Don’t trade Jimmy this year.

  12. You want to trade him when his valua is highest. So let’s sat you keep him for 2021. There are four basic scenarios tht could play out:

    1) He plays well.
    2) He has a mediocre season.
    3) He plays poorly.
    4) He gets hurt.

Only in #1 above does his trade value increase. So chances are, if you wait until after the 2021 season, he’ll likely have a lower trade value, so they should probably trade him now.

The only issue with that, though, is if they draft Lance. He is probably not ready to play on day 1.

  13. If Garappolo isn’t traded by the 49ers before tonights draft, his value to them will decrease substantially, if they do draft a QB at #3. With him carrying cap hits of $25M the next 2 years, the Niners are going to be still paying some of his salary or other teams won’t trade for him. It’s a shame JimmyG can’t stay healthy because he is a better QB than what is available to the 49ers at #3 in the draft.

  14. My answer is it might not happen this weekend, but it will happen at some point.
I keep hearing the Patriots’ name coming up as his next destination, but I don’t see it happening.
The Patriots will draft a QB this year and they have Cam Newton now. I think they’ve seen enough of Garoppolo to know that he can’t stay healthy.
Garoppolo is like Kirk Cousins to me. He isn’t an elite QB and he needs a great defense and good players around him to look like he’s a good QB.

Clearly not student of NFL history. Bill turned the Browns around and they were on the precipice of a championship caliber club before they were moved.

I won’t even go near what Bill meant to the NY Football Giants!

Can’t they both be just great?

As a Pats fan I love them both and thank them for the greatest dynasty in NFL history.

  16. On Friday the 49ers are going to send a GulfStream to go pick up the kid and introduce him around the facility. They cannot expect Jimmy to be a part of all that. It’s not his team anymore.

  17. Mac Jones will be backing up Jimmy G. for a super bowl run in 2021. Fingers crossed.

  18. …and if the player drafted by the 49ers gets stuck behind Garoppolo, that won’t go over well with the paying customers. And for good reason. Fans and media will say that the 49ers wasted draft picks that could have been used to acquire four other players over the next three drafts….

    ————————————

I don’t agree that that’s “good reason” for fans and the media to have a bad opinion about who starts at QB for SF. How about the idea that sitting a rookie QB for a year is a good idea? How about the idea that rushing young QBs onto the field before they’re ready is the NFL norm, and the success rate with that approach is terrible?

Maybe the NFL needs to start to update their approach to this and stop doing the same thing over and over.

Why does it matter what fans and know-it-all media types think? Making decisions on how to run your multi-billion dollar NFL franchise based on outside input is the worst idea of all.

Now, the bigger issue is that Garoppolo probably doesn’t want to be the placeholder until the new guy is ready. But is it such a bad situation if Jimmy G. plays well enough that it’s a difficult decision in 2022, say? Most teams would LOVE to have that problem.

Rodgers sat for 3 years. Let’s just remember that. Nowadays few coaches are even given the opportunity to develop a QB they drafted. And how’s that working for the teams that change HC and GM every couple years?

The strategy has been set — they are moving to a new QB they draft and that kid will play this year. The tactical decision in the future if Garoppolo plays well is to offer franchise tag money or not. They will not want to offer a long-term deal and he will set a price floor of the contract tag. At best they can get one more year from him.

Strategy is a long-term plan, not waffling in the wind.

  20. Why would he re-do his deal? Just refuse and then SF has to cut him and he can choose the team he goes to and not have to worry about them giving up compensation to get him

Brady certainly is an extraordinary quarterback, but I’m not sure how anyone with a functioning brain can look at what the Patriots accomplished over the last twenty years, and refer to Bill Belichick as a ‘mediocre’ coach.

BB had a losing record with the Browns and was fired for it. In 5 years there he had 1 (one) winning season. The Browns were just a few years removed from going to three conference title games. So what did BB turn around in Cleveland by having a losing record? The Ravens team that won the super bowl 5 years later had nothing to with BB.

Belichick was 5-11 with the Pats the year before he started Tom Brady, a player he lucked into in the 6th round. Brady becomes the starter only after injury to Drew Bledsoe. Brady goes on to win in his 1st season as a starter. After 20 years of winning with Brady, Brady leaves and suddenly BB has his 1st losing season since Brady started for him. Brady, on the other hand, wins the super bowl with a team that hadn’t gone to the playoffs in over a decade. Seems like you’re not a student of the game either.
