The host city of this year’s draft has its first rookie.

The Browns selected cornerback Greg Newsome II out of Northwestern with the 26th pick, adding another piece to their revamped defense.

Newsome was a first-team, All-Big Ten selection in 2020 after recording nine pass breakups and one interception as a junior. In 21 collegiate games, Newsome recorded 25 passes defended.

Newsome likely slots opposite star corner Denzel Ward, who was the team’s No. 4 overall pick back in 2018. The Browns also signed safety John Johnson and cornerback Troy Hill in free agency to help the backend of their defense.

After their best season in decades last year, the Browns have recently added edge defenders Jadeveon Clowney and Takk McKinley to help improve a unit that finished 17th in yards allowed and 21st in pointes in 2020.

  1. Great cover guy. Hope he stays healthy. Solid pick who’ll help a much improved defense

  2. Browns there’s the Browns I know. What a flat out horrible pick. Newsome is a stiff. so now they will have 2 awful Little 10 CBs that can’t cover and tackle. You cant make this up.

  3. Classic Brown move. Pass on wr Bateman for a db.. Landry back to his 5 catches for 30 yard games! LOL

  4. The fact that we aren’t picking in the top 10, and no one is bashing the pick (which was needed given the play of the defense last year) is the ultimate win for us Browns fans! It’s amazing how quickly AB and KS were able to bring respectability and structure to this organization. Took a while to get to this point, but definitely enjoying the ride right now. GO BROWNS!

  5. Browns base defense will have 5 DB’s on the field – thus depth and versatility will be a must.

  6. The only thing I don’t like about this pick is that it probably means they’ve given up on Greedy Williams, either because his nerve damage is too extensive or he just doesn’t have the talent to start opposite Ward (or both). That’s disappointing. But I like Newsome and I’m glad they’ve overhauled the defensive backfield this offseason.

  7. @pj1983a…

Might not be moving on from Greedy… its possible they’re preparing for not being able to or wanting to, depending on his health, re-sign Ward. Especially if they resign Baker and Chubb, which they should before Ward, IMO.
