Eagles swap picks with Cowboys to select DeVonta Smith at No. 10 overall

Earlier in the first round, the Dolphins reunited a former Alabama duo by selecting wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

Now the Eagles have done the same — by making a trade with a division rival.

Philadelphia acquired the 10th overall pick from Dallas in exchange for No. 12 overall and No. 84 in the third round. And with that selection, the Eagles chose wide receiver Devonta Smith.

The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, Smith will be a key weapon for quarterback Jalen Hurts, his former Alabama teammate. Hurts is the presumptive starter for the Eagles heading into the season.

Smith was electric in his final season at Alabama, recording 117 receptions for 1,856 yards with 23 touchdowns in for the national champions. He also returned a punt for a touchdown against Arkansas in December.

Much has been made about Smith’s size, as he weighed in at 166 pounds at the medical check in Indianapolis. But the Eagles apparently did not have enough concerns about Smith’s weight to take him off their draft board.

In four seasons with Alabama, Smith caught 235 passes for 3,965 yards with 46 touchdowns.

The Eagles have now taken a wide receiver in the first round two years in a row, after picking up Jalen Reagor at No. 21 overall last year.

Dallas will have to see Smith two times a year. But with the Eagles jumping ahead of the Giants to pick up Smith, the wideout was likely going to be in the NFC East regardless.

  1. great pick. If the dolphins wanted a WR, this is the guy they should have drafted. i dont know if Jalen Hurts will be the guy throwing him the ball in the future but this kid is the real deal.

  2. Not gonna lie…Eagles and Cowboys trading picks with each other is kind of gross.

  3. It happened last year too, though that was in the 4th round. It seems like tonight’s trade was a good one for both teams though. The only team the Cowboys allowed the Eagles to leapfrog was another NFC East team.

  4. Solid pick, hopefully can bring some life to punt return…it’s been a while.
Parsons will be a stud, would have smiled with either.

  5. The Cowboys knew the Giants were going to take Smith with the next pick so they made the deal with the Eagles because they figured if Smith was going to be in the NFC East, better he be with the absolute worst team in the division.

  6. If it is too windy in philly, this guy will have a tough time getting off of the ball. 166lbs……nfl is a big boy league….this is not a big boy……him and reagor will be the bubble boys in philly….only routes they can run without risking injury.

  7. @Youknowimright you don’t know football… you obviously hasn’t seen him play and who he’s lined up against. Not to mention the best corner in college last year was in practice with him everyday.

  8. His route running is filthy, he makes good DBs look silly, he catches everything, he’s fast, he’s smart, competitive, and loves the game. He will look great in Philly wearing #6.

  9. Obviously hasn’t seen him play….that just makes me sad.

Just saying the guy is really small….corners will abuse him in the nfl….and when he gets hit he is going to get hurt.

I’ll never understand Philly fans. Howie was the smartest guy in the room. So smart in fact he gave a second division rival pick 84 to “outsmart” the Giants who end up with the Bears 2022 top ten pick. Wow.

  11. Jaycee Horn has a fantastic twitchy mirror but Devonta caught balls on him all day long. This guy gets the easiest separation I’ve ever seen. WR#1

I’m not a Howie sympathizer, but I love the move he made. Take a look at the bigger picture – Devonta smith would’ve been a good choice at 6, but The Eagles moved back to 12 and got him anyway while netting an additional first for next year. I’d call that pretty good.

  13. I wonder if Jerry Jones still has some hard feelings against John Mara for publicly pushing for loss of draft picks after the cowboys treated the uncapped year as uncapped.
