Report: 49ers offered No. 3 overall pick, plus more, for Aaron Rodgers

Hoooo-boy.

You want a juicy rumor? You’re getting one.

It’s believed that the 49ers offered the No. 3 overall pick, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, other players, plus draft picks to the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Bill Michaels started the fire, attributing the report to Paul Allen of KFAN, with confirmation from others.

As we hear it, the offer was made — and rejected — last night.

A source with knowledge of the situation, however, calls the report absolutely untrue, adding that not a single call has been received on Rodgers. (It previously was reported that the Rams made a run at trading for Rodgers before trading for Matthew Stafford; the Packers denied that, too.) At least one other person in position to have knowledge regarding the situation also has denied that the 49ers tried to get Rodgers, but without going on the record.

As Josh Alper of PFT noted on an intra-company text chain, it’s surprising that the 49ers would try to trade for someone who could be dead by Sunday.

The rumor of a Rodgers trade may not die so quickly. As one source who has heard the rumor explained it, the Packers haven’t restructured Rodgers contract to maximize cap space this year due in part to the possibility that they’ll get an offer for him that they can’t refuse. As another source who hadn’t heard the rumor but found it plausible remarked, it would be interesting to know whether any of this is being instigated by Rodgers — given his frustration with his year-to-year contract status and his potential desire to get to the West Coast, a preference that could soon be enhanced by a possible offer to become the permanent host of L.A.-based Jeopardy!

One clear impediment to the offer as articulated would be the Garoppolo contract, since the Packers (nor anyone else) will pay him $25 million this year. Still, it’s food for thought in the event a team like, say, the Raiders decides to package the current starting quarterback plus a boatload of players and picks for an eleventh-hour Hail Mary aimed at bringing the master of the Hail Mary to town.

  1. Without regard to his Jeopardy performance why would the Packers consider such a trade given how Rogers has played the last 2 years. Great QBs are hard to find. Just ask any Bears fan.

  2. They should of tried trading originally with the Packers- instead of the dolphins, that package better than what they supposedly offering now.

  3. This makes more sense than trading Jimmy G and trying to compete in 2021 with a rookie QB learning a complicated offense.

  4. HA! They never even wanted a rookie QB! That explains why Shannahan looked like he’d seen a ghost watching Mac Jones sail passes ten yards over the head of his receivers at his pro day. What a gamble and what a colossal L.

  5. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
    All that value for a QB that ceiling is the NFCCC game…

  6. I’m so sick of the Packers bashing. The have absolutely surrounded the guy with enough talent to get it done. Unfortunately he’s not been very good when it truly matters. Rodgers has never once talked about wanting to get to the West Coast to end his career.

    Love Pat McAfee and the boys but their constant bashing of the Packers talent and how they handle the roster is laughable and starting to turn me off to his show.

  7. Paul Allen has a sports radio talk show in Minneapolis and is the play by play guy on Vikings radio broadcasts. How would he have any inside information on offers between the 49ers and the Packers?

  8. Kinda seems like the type of thing you would do if, oh I don’t know, you drafted a QB in the 1st round last year?!

  9. No way green bay does this. All they have done to keep the team intact to keep hope for another run this year, and maybe next, would be wasted. No one would get past san fran with Rodgers. Would be fun to watch, though, and green bay could get a few more picks trading out of number 3.

  10. I can hear the late, great Alex Trebek now…in the form of a question please: “How will insecure Aaron react?

  11. Packers would be fools not to take the 3rd pick, Jimmy G and a couple other high picks for Rodgers…instead, they’ll get a couple more seasons of salty Rodgers before he retires and moves to the West Coast to live with the soon-to-be-wife and host Jeopardy.

  12. Surprised the Packers didn’t accept and then used number 3 to trade down and do a massive reload. Reload, not rebuild.

  13. I would pay money to see Aaron Rodgers and Kyle Shanahan coexist on the same team.

  14. There is zero chance this actually happened. If the 49ers offered that, the packers would have to seriously consider that since they’ll need a QB in a couple of years and this draft is loaded.

  15. Why does GB want the 3 pick unless for one of the QBs. Then what do they do with Love. Trade Love or maybe take Pitts at 3 or flip the pick? Curious to know what the other players and picks were. Interesting proposal given ARs age. Tell SF to keep Jimmy G 😆

  16. I’ve never seen this before. With the 49er’s, we have a team that seemingly way-overpaid for a draft slot that they really have no clue as to what they want to do with it.

  17. Yeah right. Why would Green Bay want Jimmy G involved in this deal? Probably helped kill any chance of it happening

  18. Hilarious!
    The garbage is coming fast and furious now.

    It comes as absolutely no surprise that this originated with the notoriously unreliable, Viking homer, Paul Allen in conjunction with KFAN.
    I’m quite sure he wishes this were true.
    Anything to get Aaron Rodgers out of the NFC North. 😉

  19. The Packers are on the decline and should have traded Rodgers.
    I’m not saying Love is any good, but riding Rodgers on the way down doesn’t gain them in the long run.
    Trading him for a QB and others does.

  20. Right. Because Paul Allen is such a reliable source when it comes to the Packers.

    I do not believe this one bit.

    ______

    Why? Paul Allen is the Vikings play by play guy and is as plugged in as anyone in the NFL. If he said it happened, it happened. Yes, he’s a huge homer and has been known to say ridiculous things (opinions) but this isn’t an opinion. He doesn’t throw stuff out there without regard for whether or not it’s true.

  22. Well that should put all the dopey nonsense about Jordan Love to rest.

    Let’s face it – when you are the most successful franchise in NFL history with a record 13 World Championships, other teams desperately want what you have.

  23. What these managers of the Packers have done with their time with Rodgers will go down as the all-time-worst squandering of a HOF QB in the history of the league.

    Zero first-round receivers, trading up to draft a 1st-round QB no one wanted just before Rodgers has an MVP season, kicking a FG with the season on the line… they’re just completely incompetent. Completely and utterly incompetent.

    SF knows how to build and coach a team, and Rodgers clearly would rather be out west. Instead we’ll get more of the idiotic passive-aggressive approach from Packers management that will neither help them win a SB nor build for the future.

  24. I guess the 49ers are content with exiting the playoffs every year without getting to the big show

  25. Paul Allen has a sports radio talk show in Minneapolis and is the play by play guy on Vikings radio broadcasts. How would he have any inside information on offers between the 49ers and the Packers?

    —————————————————————
    Likely he doesn’t and that’s the point. A division rival trying to start trouble. Pathetic desperation as the Pukings know they have no shot with Rodgers at the helm.

  26. Maybe 7-10 years ago but at Rodgers age I don’t see them offering that. He has 3-4 years left.

  27. Why turn this down when last year instead of adding weapons you drafted a qb?
    You literally chose to plan for your future then…..why the opposite now?

    What i think may give the Packers pause is…how do you draft at 3? Give up on your 2020 pick already? To make this count you will probably need to take a wr or Pitts too high or at least have that player compared to the loss of Rodgers….orfind another trade partner to move down a few spots…..may be too late for that.

  28. As a Chiefs Fan whose team is now playing Green Bay this year, please trade Rodgers to San Fran.

  29. Why would this be hard to believe? The Packers moved up in the draft to get a QB last year. They have not given Rodgers a new contract. And they haven’t been to the SB in 11 years. Oh, and the Packers summarily dumped their last HOF QB, actually asking him to retire first.

    Yeah it was Rodgers who called that defense to end the half, giving up 7 pts in a game they lost by 5. And it was most definitely Rodgers who committed def holding to end the game.

    The dude had a 30 pt higher qbr than Tom Brady, but who cares about the actual facts right? It’s all his fault.

  33. Smart by 49ers. I love it for them by going for it. You look at that Tampa Roster which, I don’t even know what to compare it to, but it seems for this yr at the least you really need to load up to compete with them. San Fran is close and that’s what it’s going to take is having an Aaron Rodgers type. On the contrary I see why Green Bay wouldn’t do deal because it would excuse themselves from another shot in the NFC championship no matter how much they get in return from San Fran

  34. The Packers are on the decline and should have traded Rodgers.
    —–
    This is a team that didn’t make the playoffs in 2017&18. They’ve been to the NFCCG twice since then. Are you sure you know what decline means?

  35. Anything to get Aaron Rodgers out of the NFC North.
    ———————————
    How exactly does reporting a lie achieve what you stated?

    I don’t understand. The 49ers need a home-run QB as they are in a Division now where they have the worst qb situation….i had them going after Watson before the litigation issue…..they need to make a move for a top level qb and it needs to work.

    Actually Bret retired 1st. they did not ask him to retire. Remember all the crocodile tears . Team did not ask him to do that. And they made the right decision in not bringing him back. Go Packers….

  37. IF GB truly believes that Jordan Love is the QB heir to Rodgers than they are foolish to turn down this trade. The could fill multiple holes, trade #3 to another team for future draft picks and be set for years to come……………IF they truly believe in Jordan Love. My suspicion is that they do not and don’t want it to be shown as to why!

  38. Wow, if this is true we basically have zero faith in Love and that blown pick is confirmed.

  39. Will ARod re-structure his contract to facilitate a trade? If he won’t, trade won’t happen as the cap hit would be 37M. I also think the Pack will give him another chance to lose in the NFC Championship game (I am a Packers fan BTW).

  40. The confirmation from others is confirmation that Paul Allen said it. I can confirm that. He’s about as plugged in as my toaster.

  41. Um….Rodgers hates the 9ers for humiliating him on draft day…..he’d retire before playing for them.

  42. I can see the Packers turning this down because they could probably do better if they put Rodgers on the open market. The question is why they haven’t done that yet. They drafted Love last year to replace Rodgers, right?

  43. hmmm tough decision for the Pack: do I want the reigning NFL MVP who is arguably one of the best qbs to play in the last 20-30 years….or do I want the #3 ovr pick who MIGHT turn out to be good? HMMMMM that is a difficult choice

  44. Aaron Rodgers is untradeable. He is the Green Bay Packers. Without him they are bottom dwellers in my opinion.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Somebody had better inform the Canadiens, Celtics, and Yankees. They might have something to say about it.

  46. I don’t believe this as you would be a fool to turn down that offer, especially as it seems the Packers have clearly decided to keep Aaron on a year to year basis

  47. This trade makes so much sense for both teams that it was almost certainly dreamed up by fan.

    Over the summer when GB extends Rodger’s contract you will rip on Packers for that and how they are being held hostage..blah blah blah.Barneys will be all over this site on how Rodgers can’t win big game …..from fans of a franchise who never won ever!
    Wait an unnamed source just told Florio that Brady and Rodgers are being traded to the Jets for the rights to joe Namath and Richard Todd plus 14 first round picks and Rex Ryan’s wife’s shoe collection!
    How about some respect for us fans and only publish credible information.

  52. This thread pulls the 49ers even with the Patriots for ridiculous pre-draft theories.

    You obviously need glasses or better ones because the Packers have not done enough for Rodgers. For years they haven’t given him an actual No. 2 wideout, they are rarely active in free agency, and drafted a dam QB in the first round who we don’t know when will play when they could’ve went with a LB or WR to help GB get in the superbowl. Everyone on First take said the same exact thing so it’s not just Pat McAfee

  55. I also heard a rumor that the Kyle Shanahan is talking to Joe Montana about returning

  56. IF they truly believe in Jordan Love. My suspicion is that they do not and don’t want it to be shown as to why!
    ——————————–

    Actually, if that was the case, then this would be an excellent opportunity t I pick a qb at three.

    Or even trade down and get more picks AND a qb as there are a reported 5….the Packers do not need Rodgers to compete in that division if they can get a top corner, wr or with additional.picks they will still br very good….plus Garapolo is a capable guy just not able to stay healthy. Maybe the colder weather is preferred for him and less distractions….Rodgers is great….but he has only achieved there when the overall team was very good….he is not doing it on his own.

    ~~~
    It works by getting people to think and talk about it. Rodgers is a home run QB, albeit older. None of the QBs in the draft are a sure thing and have to get up to NFL speed. Rodgers is already there.
    If the whole thing is a lie, it was a well thought out one. Including Jimmy G in the mix makes sense as a salary swap. The hang-up that I have is that Jimmy has a No Trade clause. Why would he want to be traded to a team who drafted a QB in the 1st round the year before? He would be in the same situation he is in now.
  58. This doesn’t make any sense and I hope comes from something reliable. The Packers would have preferred multiple 1st round package they offered the Dolphins. The Packers would want as many 1st rounders to build around Love as possible.
  59. I guess that tells you all you need to know about the actual value of QBR
    —-
    No, it tells you the value of a good defense. When one QB clearly outplays the other, yet still loses, it’s pretty obvious.
  60. I don’t have any idea why Paul Allen of the Vikings radio broadcasts would have inside information on Packers matters. It was just wishful thinking to get Rodgers out the NFC North, which is every Vikings fan’s dream. Hopefully that day will be coming soon.
  61. Why on Earth would the Packers hand an NFC opponent who is one QB away from perfection, an MVP QB? Aaron Rodgers is still available but the wrong team reached out.
  62. Surprised the Packers didn’t accept and then used number 3 to trade down and do a massive reload. Reload, not rebuild
    ———————————-
    You need a trade partner to do that.
    With the 9ers set who would trade there knowing that the Packers don’t want a qb? Nor do the teams immediately behind? A team could spend less and get their qb of choice at 6 or 7.
    It would only make sense if the Packers want a qb or a particular player there….because there are no other teams looking to jump that high.
  63. I wouldn’t have taken if I were GB, but I also think what they gave to Miami is more valuable than what they offered to GB. SF doesn’t have enough first rounders left to get Rodgers.
  64. Neither the Packers nor anyone else has seen Love play even one series in an exhibition game. Until they know more about his ability, they’re not even going to think about letting Rodgers go. Next topic.
  65. bartholomew says:
    The poster commented that the Vikings are trying to hurt the Packers by this rumor, or get Rodgers out.
    How does people talking about this hurt the Packers?
    How does a rumor about a false trade offer get Rodgers out of the Division?
    Or are you stating that teams are going to consider a rumor simply because someone put it out there and they will then pursue a trade based on that?
  66. This isn’t really that outrageous of a rumor — long shot offers like these are made all the time, but us little folks just never hear about them. And hey, you can’t blame the 49ers for trying. They’ve got a pretty good team, and why not shoot for the moon. I think the Pack would be nuts to agree — they should just offer them Jordan Love.
  67. “It’s believed that the 49ers offered the No. 3 overall pick, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, other players, plus draft picks to the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers”
    No one wants to trade up to the 3rd pick unless they’re taking a QB. If that were so, this trade would give the Packers, Love, Garappolo, and a rookie QB. That is not happening. Even taking on Garoppolo would be an admission that they messed up with the Love pick.
  68. Number 3 and Jimmy G …LOL…i laugh at that offer you keep jimmy and give me Nick Bosa
    and this years #2 and next years # 2 and you got a deal .
  69. Green bay should have pulled the trigger. Ultimately rodgers is a California kid. He would have loved to play for the 49ers.
    This opinion is ridiculous.
    The Packers have consistently put good players around Rodgers.
    It’s the combination of Rodgers brilliance and the talent around him that have led to so many wins throughout Aaron’s career.
    They are 137-72-1 together.
    They have recently hired a coach who’s 28-8 over the last two seasons, 11-1 in the division.
    Profootball Focus, the premier website for crunching stats, numbers, as well as gauging player performances, ranked Green Bay’s roster #1 overall at the end of last season.
    They are currently ranked 4th after free agency.
    Sometimes, for a myriad of reasons, teams just can’t close the deal, it happens.
    That’s just football.
    Rodgers only played well last year. It was an middle finger to the Packer for seating love. That is what it took for Rodgers to try and care enough to be good again. The prior two years Rodgers was mediocre at best which is why the Packers traded up to draft love in the first place.
    Not close to true if they took ?Garoppolo goo it would mean merely that they want to bring Love along slowly. Not all QB’s are ready day one. They didn’t even get to see him play last year.
    this rumor is merely guaging what the market looks like. Most in GB know he’s getting traded next year likely. Not this year if the deal is great though why not take JG let him play for a year trade him or cut him and then the Love show starts with all the high picks.
