Multiple reports tabbed the Saints as a team looking to move up the draft board during Thursday’s first round, but the NFC South side didn’t make any moves.

New Orleans stayed put at No. 28 and they used that selection to take defensive end Payton Turner.

Turner comes to the Saints after four years at the University of Houston and he recorded 114 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, and an interception during his time at the school. He will join 2018 first-round pick Marcus Davenport, who had his fifth-year option exercised this week, on the edges of the defense.

The chatter regarding the Saints’ potential move up the board had them targeting a cornerback. With Turner coming on board, they’ll have to find help at that spot later in the draft.

  1. the reality of life without a QB has apparently not set in for the saints yet? this seems like a luxury move up (as a Bears fan, well familiar with that!)

  2. A bit of a head-scratcher, for sure. But that’s par for Loomis & Payton, and they usually get it right. So we’ll see!

  3. if this had been like 3 years ago and we had the chance to get Lsu Terrance Marshall at 28th it wouldve been awesome because the saints WR depth has been terrible for years. But until you’ve got a for sure proven QB, there’s no point in getting WRs, if anything they’ll just disguise the problem. Very glad the saints didnt trade up and hope the rest of the draft is full of boring OL and front 7 picks. Reload Mode.

  4. They reached on Davenport a few years ago and that worked out so well…. lets try it again. Oh wait Davenport is a bust. Terrible pick

  5. Never can go wrong loading up your front 7. This is a boom-bust type of guy though.

  6. Remember the Patriots. After Brady split there was a big stink about who would do better. Well as you can see Brady has another ring and the Patriots don’t.

Bree’s retired. expect the same thing…

The Saints will not do well at.

  7. Payton Turner could very well be one of the biggest surprise successes of the 1st round.
All the scouts agree he is an ascendant talent, watch what happens next!

Winston, one year removed from lasik surgery (threw for 5100 yds in 2019 without good eyesight!) and one year of study in the Saints system, will have a great season with the Saints, and their offense will be awesome…
