A post-June 1 Aaron Rodgers trade makes much better sense for Packers

Divisional Round - Los Angeles Rams v Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers say they’re not trading quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Just like multiple teams have said in the past, about multiple players who eventually were traded.

If the Packers are going to trade Rodgers, it could make sense to process the transaction as a post-June 1 deal.

Trading Rodgers before June 2 would result in a $31.55 million cap acceleration. Coupled with the cap charge coming from the $6.8 million roster bonus that Rodgers already has been paid, that would amount to $38.35 million in dead money.

A post-June 1 trade would reduce the added 2021 cap charge to $14.352 million, pushing the balance of $17.198 million to 2022.

Thus, even though teams like the Broncos and Raiders have used their 2021 first-round picks, the Packers would be better off waiting until June 2 to do the deal — which would entail getting draft picks in 2022 or beyond.

  1. Walter of WalterFootball fame says that the Broncos loved Justin Fields who fell to them. Yet Denver unexpectedly took Surtain in round one. Walter suspects that Green Bay and Denver have already cut a deal with Denver getting Rogers and GB getting Surtain.

  2. Even though the fans of the NFCN would love to see Rodgers get traded and improve their chances at a Division title it aint going to happen.AR is under contract for a substancial amount of money on a contract HE signed not too long ago so if he wants out of Green Bay it will be because he retires.he couldnt be the highest paid qb forever and reality has caught up to him so just play like your huge contract demands.

  3. Is there any HOF QB relationship the Packers can’t destroy? I guess making Bart Starr the head coach for a stretch was the last straw.

  4. I just don’t see this happening.

    Why would a team trade the current league MVP and leave themselves without an experienced NFL QB?

  5. What teams? Guess the Raiders and Broncos are still in play. Maybe the Texans, although they have nothing to give the Packers.

  6. Thank you, sir.

    It is simply astounding, reading comments here, how little people seem to know about the salary cap.

  7. Sorry pack fan, a deal is already done. June 2nd Rodgers will be traded to the Denver Broncos. You heard it here 1st or 38TH.

    He signed the contract and has lived up to it thus far. But he didnt sign up to be disrespected constantly.

    From “dont be the problem”, to using the 1st and 4th round picks for a QB in a receiver heavy draft, to taking the ball out of his hands with the game on the line.

    He should sit until he is traded.

  9. Worried about the domino effect.

    Why would an All-Pro corner like Jaire want to play for a 6-10 team?

    Why would a #1 receiver like Davante want to play for a losing team?

    This could turn into a 4 win team at warp speed.

  10. So Love still isn’t ready to take the reins? GB – smh. Guess we’re gonna find out. Kudos to Rodgers for not drawing things out like Favre. Rodgers leaving GB = LeBron leaving Cleveland
    – lol. Rodgers is a generational talent that helps you recover from poor drafts, injuries etc. The QBs that come out now need a lot more help, therefore a lot less room for error with drafts and FA’s.

  11. If/when Rodgers is traded the starting QBs of the NFC north will be — Goff, Dalton/Fields, Cousins, and Love — lol that’s a sad division

  12. Broncos are ALL IN on this guy or Watson. They passed on fields specifically to get these 2 guys .Rodgers is far more likely

  13. Not going to happen. You don’t trade somebody of that caliber unless at least one of the top 3 picks in the draft are included. Plus several other draft picks (including 2 more first rounders) and a pro bowl caliber player. You cannot be guaranteed a top 3 pick in the draft if you trade before the end of the season.

    That doesn’t make any sense because the Packers took a CB with their first round pick.

    The damage Rodgers is doing to the Packer’s organization is 10 times worse then anything Favre ever did. Don’t forget that Favre wanted to come back to the Packers out of retirement but was told Rodgers was their man now. I find it hilarious that people who were critical of Favre are now giving Rodgers a pass.

  16. The Packers have proven with their whole handling of this that they aren’t really all that committed to actually winning the Super Bowl. If they were they would have taken a WR last draft. Instead they picked Love “for the future” because they want to make sure they don’t bottom out after Rodgers leaves or retires and maybe lose their jobs. But at this point Rogers’ only motivation is winning the big one. Both sides are better off if they trade him post June 1.

  17. There’s a theory out there that Dever drafted Surtain for Green Bay and that they are just waiting to make the deal official after June 1st.

  18. Favre’s last game as a Packer was the home NFC Championship game against the Giants (who won the Super Bowl), and Favre throws an INT to pretty much seal the game for NYG. Rogers’ last game as a Packer is a home NFC Championship that he couldn’t convert a first and goal from the 8 and he gets criticized for not trying to run it in for the score. So this leads me to believe Jordan Love will be the QB for the next 16 years, win one Super Bowl, and we continue to draft CB’s & defence in the first round of the draft for the next decade.

  19. The damage Rodgers is doing to the Packer’s organization is 10 times worse then anything Favre ever did.
    ==========

    The Packers contributed to teh Favre-mess.

    Everyone on earth knew Favre would prefer to die on the football field, talking retirement was his way of trying to get the team to sell out.

    .. I’m going to reserve judgement on Rodgers until he speaks out.

    If the rumor is true that the Packers told him they would trade him, this is 100% on THEM, in my opinion.

  20. “Why would a team trade the current league MVP and leave themselves without an experienced NFL QB?”

    Because Brian Gutekunst’s ego is bigger than Lambeau Field and he wants to show everybody he can land a HOF QB too just like Ted and Ron. This has been the plan since he traded up except Rodgers didn’t cooperate and went out and had an MVP season.

    People want to blame Rodgers for this, but Gutie started the snowball rolling. And for the idiots that think Rodgers has no leverage? He doesn’t need this job, has money and outside interests. Making him sit just screws the team.

  21. The Packers have proven with their whole handling of this that they aren’t really all that committed to actually winning the Super Bowl. If they were they would have taken a WR last draft.
    ==========

    They were the #1 offense last year.

    They can’t consistently stop anyone on defense, and have needs on every level. A WR won’t solve those problems.

  22. There’s a theory out there that Dever drafted Surtain for Green Bay and that they are just waiting to make the deal official after June 1st.
    ==========

    The LA Times (Gary Klein) hinted the Rams presented the Stafford-deal for Rodgers and were shot down.

  23. If Rodgers wants to cement his legacy with a 2nd and possibly 3rd SB title he will go to New England to tutor Mac Jones and play for the greatest coach in NFL History. Are you listening Aaron ? Belichick is secretly calling…………

  24. Sorry pack fan, a deal is already done. June 2nd Rodgers will be traded to the Denver Broncos. You heard it here 1st or 38TH.

    I’m still shocked Belichick didn’t get in on this.

    Right up his alley. Premium QB at a bargain price ($14.7mil in 2021, $25mil for 2022 & 2023)

  25. Favre’s last game as a Packer was the home NFC Championship game against the Giants (who won the Super Bowl), and Favre throws an INT to pretty much seal the game for NYG. Too bad the defense got bludgeoned to death in both games.

  26. But, but, but, everybody reported last night that it was a done deal that he was going to DEN now . . . what happened to that story? And who has the capital AND the cap to do a trade like this? Has anybody analyzed that?

  27. What will happen first he dumps his girlfriend or leaves Packers?
    ==========

    the second part of your question has already happened..

  28. Everyone seems to be forgetting that Rogers has a “no trade “clause in his contract,also Rogers has a huge ego like most athletes that are one of the best,he will Not go crawling back to GB after saying he won’t play for them,he’ll sit out and host jeopardy which sounds funny but that’s what he’s going to do..so say goodbye GB,he’s gonna choose where he’s going,packers don’t have any leverage

    Yes, check over the cap website. The Broncos are 23 million under the cap with ways to make more room. It’s happening after June 1st. Best get used to it.

    Not sure how you missed it, but Vince Lombardi passed away in 1970.

  32. I don’t know this for sure-but Denver should have picked a quarterback at 9-except if they knew getting Rodgers after june1. i was shocked when they did not do it.

  33. It isn’t one of his preferred destinations, but what about Rodgers for Russell Wilson? Both want away from their current teams, and both are good QBs. Seems like it would be a relatively easy match.

  34. I’d be tickled pink if the Packers traded Rodgers to a bad team. It’s too bad the Jets have a quarterback now, and the Texans couldn’t make it work with their cap situation.

  35. The Packers are NOT going to get rid of one of the best QBs in the game. No way. No how.

    Fun fact: IN the history of the NFL, no team has ever traded or cut an MVP player, much less an MVP QB.

  36. This is funny and what most good football and packer fans have known for awhile. He’s not getting traded until after this year. I love the guy but at that point you trade him for a great value he’s got a guy behind him to push him so his EGO won’t let him play poorly so either way it’s a win for him and a win for the GBP.

  37. As a Vikings fan, while I certainly would not cry about Rodgers leaving the North (or the NFC altogether) I would opine that Teams are not quaking in their boots that they “can’t win a Division Title” with him there.

  38. If Rodgers retires or refuses to play, he will owe the Packers more than $30 million.

    It’s probably chump change for Rodgers but still would he just throw that money away?

    Won’t ARod be a free agent at the end of this season anyway? So is this just about leverage for more contract $$$?

  39. I laugh at all these reports about the Packers trading Aaron Rodgers. Just like I laughed at the reports about the Seahawks trading Russell Wilson and the Steelers trading Ben Roethlisberger.
    It’s not happening, folks. Rodgers isn’t going anywhere this year. The Packers have ALL the leverage in spite of what everyone says. Rodgers is under contract and unless he wants to retire (in which case he’ll have to repay over 30 million dollars to the Packers), or unless he wants to hold out — he will be the starting QB for the Packers this year.
    For those who think he will retire or hold out — there’s no way he’d do that. He’s too competitive to quit or hold out while he is still on top of his game.
    a couple of years ago, all the talk was Tom Brady and Bill Belichick were not getting along. All they did that year was win a Super Bowl together!
    Brady finally did leave, but that was because he knew they didn’t have the talent to win anymore.
    So — please — get real, folks! Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere and you can take it to the bank!

  40. Too bad that defense got him 3 turnovers which he went 3 and out on 2 of them, right?
    ========

    31 points allowed.

    Actually 9 less than the 40 points per game the Packers have averaged in their losses.

    Progress?………

  41. Lots of reports out there from reporters who do not have first hand info. Has Rodgers spoken to anyone?….No.

    Has Gute?… And what did he say? “Rodgers is not going to be traded.”

    Rodgers is going to play this year for the Packers. Book it!

  42. Given what happened when the Patriots let Brady walk, I don’t think the Packers want to allow Aaron Rodgers to win the Super Bowl with a different franchise. They’ll make him retire before letting him play for anyone else. That also fits with the general lack of respect they’ve been showing him. He’s a diva, but he’s also the MVP and made Green Bay successful even when there were issues with the offense.

  43. Just a simple Question:
    Why would Rodgers want the Broncos?
    I mean, they’re fine, they’re a decent team, but not nearly as close to the Superbowl as the Packers…
    the 49ers, on the other hand, now THAT would be something for Rodgers…
    Has the Packers brass said something about the Trade -if- ‘must be out of the NFC’ ?
    I would think that if Rodgers is willing to go this far, burn it down, he would want to go to a team already parked on the doorstep of the Superbowl, like the Packers are now.
    So, I dont get it.

    ///////
    Well, if he refuses to play, his contract tolls. If he retires, he could make way more than that being the Jeopardy host. And then there’s the little fact that his fiancee is a rich actress as well. You’re thinking like a poor person, not like what Rodgers would think like.

  45. “Is there any HOF QB relationship the Packers can’t destroy? I guess making Bart Starr the head coach for a stretch was the last straw.”

    They have forgotten what it’s like to suck. I hope they let Rogers go. Then they will find out that their supposedly genius coach is a bum. The QB makes the coach not the other way around. Ask Bill B.

  46. For those that think this is all smoke, including cheesers, you’re dreaming. It’s real whether something has come out of Rodgers’ mouth or not. For those that don’t think Rodgers can’t or won’t force his way out of Green Bay if he’s serious, they don’t know they guy and are dreaming even more. Rodgers isn’t wired like other NFLers. The question is how serious he is, and this is a guy that doesn’t usually act unless he means it. If I were a Packer fan and liked Rodgers as my starter (which anyone with half a brain would), I’d be very worried.

  47. If they are serious about Love being their future then it’s time to get what you can for “the game show host” and throw the baby (Love) into the lake and see if he can swim. If not then they need to get another QB. Better get something for A.R. now before he gets long in the tooth and they can’t get much for him. If history tells us anything you don’t want a player on your roster who doesn’t want to be there & especially your starting QB.

  48. I would not be surprised if Aaron is on the phone with Brett now asking how do I get out of here…GB management is a disaster, 30 years of two HOF QBs and we get 2 rings. GB only builds teams to win the weak NFC North and then crosses its fingers when the playoffs start.

    Using the 1st and 4th rounder for a “QB of the future” isnt helping the defense either. It doesnt help anyone on the field

  51. If it’s okay for deshaun Watson to complain then It’s okay for Aaron Rodgers to complain all he wants!

  52. Justin Fields was available when Denver’s pick #9 was on the the clock last night which is certainly better than Drew Lock from a skill set standpoint. Why didn’t they select Fields? Hmmm…

  53. I don’t know why anybody would put Denver on their short list of teams they’d play for… Have you ever been to that airport?

  54. “Fun fact: Farve was a three time MVP and WAS TRADED to the Jets.”

    Favre was NOT the current MVP when he was traded.

  55. In 2020, the Packers had a 36 year old qb who was playing well and should for another two or three years. Now is the time to bring in a youngster to groom if there is one available that you believe in. Makes perfect sense. Rodgers needs to grow up.

  56. Teams that would be in on him.. Saints, Raiders, WFT, Carolina maybe Denver. Maybe a surprise team like Ravens. Who else?

  57. As a Bears fan I want to thank Aaron Rodgers for his well timed tantrum, the possibility of him being traded caused Denver to pass on Fields allowing the Bears to move up and grab him which was the steal of the draft as Fields is one of the top two QBs in this draft, Which will become obvious over the next couple of seasons. Prepare for Chicago to completely dominate GB for at least the next decade and win multiple Super Bowls!
    Thanks Aaron!!!

  58. The Packers created this mess. Just like Brady, the management and coaches took their star player for granted and relied on said player to win surrounded by mediocre offensive talent. Drafting Jordan Love was a huge mistake and likely cost them a Super Bowl trip.

  59. I truly do not care where this goes. I do not. If Rodgers stays….great. If he leaves……good luck. The uncertainty of Rodgers playing after Favre left was a refreshing and challenging era. Who knew? I look forward to the same challenges after Rodgers is gone, if and when. That’s what being a Packer fan is all about. It isn’t about one player. This team has given me so much. I look forward to whatever is next, after all, it’s just a game.
