Despite trading three first-round picks to acquire quarterback Trey Lance, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after Thursday night’s first round that Jimmy Garoppolo remains the starting quarterback, and it would be tough for Lance to beat him out.

Shanahan referred to Lance as “a very good backup” in an interview on ESPN and said the starting job is Garoppolo’s.

“It’s going to be very hard for a rookie to come in and beat Jimmy Garoppolo out. He’s a very good player,” Shanahan said. “That’s why I like the situation that we are in. Now, we’ll see where Trey’s at. We’ll see how he does at OTAs. I love that we’re getting those. I love that he’s going to be here tomorrow. But Jimmy’s our quarterback right now.”

Obviously, the 49ers didn’t give up three first-round picks for a backup. Lance was drafted to be the starter. But Shanahan continues to insist that Lance will only be the starter when and if he proves he’s better than Garoppolo.

  1. This is a classic boom-or-bust pick. If he’s the second coming of Mahommes, then great. But if he doesn’t work out, you gave up a ton and essentially lost two QBs.

They’re in win-now mode, but other than Stafford, I haven’t seen any QB available to them that helps them win now.

  2. Glad you kept everyone guessing- like anyone cared that it was Lance who you could have gotten at 12. Gross

  3. He doesn’t have to beat out Jimmy G he just has to wait until Jimmy gets hurt…again

  4. Then why did you spend three 1st-round picks on him if you don’t think he can beat out the incumbent?

  5. You are full of it. If Jimmy is your guy, roll with him, then you would still have lots of picks to build around him. We do not believe you!!

  6. The Trey Lance pick is extremely risky. He has only 17 starts in college against “cupcakes”. There is no doubt about his talent. However, no one knows how he will react when on the big stage against NFL defenses.
There is about a 50% chance he becomes a bust.

  7. If it’s going to be so hard for him to beat out Jimmy, why’d you draft him? Why not just get Jimmy some more help? Just tell the truth! You just wanted to seem so hard so that when he actually does start you think you’ll be more accomplished!

  8. It’s hard for any rookie to beat out the veteran who already knows the system, and will look much better at practice. Lots of opportunities happen when the veteran gets hurt and the youngster gets forced into action. Then it just depends on how well he’s doing when the veteran is ready to return.

  9. Until Jimmy Glass gets hurt walking into the building.

  10. Lance doesn’t have to try to beat out Jimmy G. All he has to do is wait until Jimmy G. gets hurt like he always does. It’s like death and taxes – inevitable.

  11. It’s a bit disingenuous to say they gave up three first round picks. They received the third pick back.

  12. I’m really going to enjoy the 49ers taking their sweet time with this dream athlete while impatient fans complain.

  13. As it should be. A player’s place on the team should be earned. Not sure why this bothers you.

  14. So let’s wrap our heads around this. They traded away 3 round 1 picks for a high risk QB who can’t beat out their current QB and add the fact that they wanted to trade the pick for Aaron Rogers…….yeah they absolutely got it right. (utmost sarcasm)

  15. Trey Lance will be forever known as the guy who won the 2024 Super Bowl for the Miami Dolphins.

  16. He’s right it would be hard, but it won’t be hard if Jimmy G is somewhere else

  17. They must have really believed in Lance. So much so they were in full desperation mode trying to get Aaron Rodgers the night before the draft. At least people in the media won’t attack them for taking slow white guy Mac Jones at 3. Great job 49ers.

  18. I have to agree with Jake1057 – giving all that up for a non starter? wow? okay so now if you groom him for a year or two he better turn into Aaron Rogers after giving up that haul

  19. Wouldn’t surprise me if 49ers make Jimmy take a pay cut. With Patriots and Bears both drafting QBs, Jimmy has zero leverage.

  20. Matt Ryan has said it took him TWO years to be comfortable in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. And he’s a veteran NFL QB.

Trey Lance may turn out to be a great QB, but Garoppolo will be 49ers starter for at least 2021, if not 2022 with his relatively cheap contract. It’s just stunning that professional sports writers think otherwise – it’s like they never analyze the WHOLE picture, including the type of offense he’s walking into.

  21. SF really screwed. How do you trade 2 first round picks for a backup QB?? Should have drafted Pitts and given Jummy G an undeniable all-in receiving group.

  22. So you traded 3 1st’s to move up to grab Lance, yet the morning of the draft you also tried to trade Jimmy to Green Bay.

Do you think you have even a shred of credibility with Jimmy right now??

  23. Odd that you would trade up to 3 overall to take a player who you admit cannot make an immediate impact on the field….

  24. It really doesn’t matter. With Jimmy’s history of injuries he’ll get in there one way or another.

Every move has made sense. They told Jimmy being hurt 2 of 3 years with the team isn’t cutting it. They move up to draft a QBs. Then the league MVP may be available. Of course you look into that. How soft would Jimmy have to be forever bent out of shape by any of these moves? Go into camp, play great, be the starter and your career will continue somewhere.

  26. All the QBs are going to ideal locations. Trey Lance is the football savant and when a physically gifted QB puts in the mental work and preparation that’s when the Magic happens in the Shanahan Offense.

Mac Jones went to his ideal team, and Nagy – the Andy Reid disciple had found his Version of Mahomes in Justin Fields.

  27. 3 1st round picks for the least pro ready qb…
that needle on the boom or bust meter is leaning HARD toward bust… that move may just have cost the HC and GM their job…

  28. So you mortgage the future…

For a player that you can’t use until the future….

    Awesome.

  29. The Niners are in a really bad situation–unless Lance turns out to be on the level of Mahommes. Even Mahommes sat a year before starting, so Lance not starting right away isn’t a big problem. That said, with all the draft capital they gave for a guy who never played against a defense as good as the worst defense in the SEC, the odds of Lance becoming a great NFL QB are not good.

  30. Shanahan will be fired within two years, this pick will be the reason…!!!

NDSU also didn’t have WRs 10 yards wide open on every play for easy completions. Or 5 NFL-caliber linemen blocking and giving the QB 15 seconds to survey the defense and make perfect throws.

Without star talent at NDSU, Lance will face the same conditions in the NFL as he did in college – tight windows to throw into and constant pressure.

  32. Look… this draft was tough in the sense that not only did players like Lance not play against top competition…

    He barely played AT ALL…

That to me is more worrisome than playing against lesser competition.

  33. Why are people rushing to play Lance? No rookie QB has ever won a Super Bowl. They have a QB in Garoppolo who went the SB with a competitive team so why not let Jimmy G to play and compete as long as his health allows see how far he can go. If the team does well, then Jimmy will be a great trade bait next year. If not or he gets injured, they can start Lance and embark on a new era. It’s not that complicated. The Chiefs moved up to draft Mahomes and let him sit behind Alex Smith for a year. It’s not that complicated.

  34. The 49ers have done everything in the world to say that they are not confident with Jimmy G as their franchise QB.

  35. Shanny is obviosuly talking Jimmy G up for a trade. Disingenuous is the word that comes to mind…

  36. “Obviously, the 49ers didn’t give up three first-round picks for a backup. Lance was drafted to be the starter. But Shanahan continues to insist that Lance will only be the starter when and if he proves he’s better than Garoppolo.” | No, it’s not obvious. The 49ers have a championship caliber roster this year and expectations are high for the upcoming season. What is obvious is… they’re not about to drastically reduce their chance at success by rolling with a rookie QB when they don’t have to. If Garoppolo gets hurt and the 49ers have to play Lance that’s one thing. But to do it when they don’t have to?… that’s something else. Lance started what like 18 games in his college career at a D3 school so it’s going to take him some time before he’s able to read complicated and disguised NFL defenses. Lance’s time will come, but like Jordan Love in Green Bay, it may take a season or two.

  37. That is an admission that he picked the wrong QB in the draft. All the experts knew that. That was why they predicted that Frisco would pick Mac Jones. Only fake fans who want the 9ers to fail lobbied hard for Trey Lance.

    Stop.

Like Mac Jones in New England, Lance was NEVER pegged to start in his rookie year. Shanahan runs a very complicated offense that takes time to understand.

Same with Jones in NE. That Erhardt-Perkins system is just as hard to grasp with all the moving parts, so he’s unlikely to start either.
