Report: Aaron Rodgers wants the Packers to fire G.M. Brian Gutekunst

So why is quarterback Aaron Rodgers upset with the Packers? He’s specifically disenchanted with one person.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Rodgers won’t return to the Packers as long as Brian Gutekunst serves as the team’s General Manager. Rodgers is willing to consider “hardline options” to get what he wants, from skipping the entire offseason to holding out of training camp, to possibly retiring.

Robinson reports, citing an unnamed source in Rodgers’ camp, that a reconciliation may not be possible if Gutekunst continues to be the G.M. Also, Robinson reports that team CEO Mark Murphy is aware of Rodgers’ position on Gutekunst.

“The ball is in Mark’s court,” the unnamed source told Robinson.

Things fell apart, not surprisingly, when Gutekunst traded up to select quarterback Jordan Love in 2020, without first telling Rodgers. According to Robinson, Rodgers believed that the Packers intended to supplant him with Love after the 2020 season.

Robinson reports that Rodgers’ camp has proposed a contract that would tie the two sides together for the next two seasons, and that the Packers have resisted.

The options moving forward are simple. First, the Packers can trade Rodgers. Second, they can fire Gutekunst. (That definitely shouldn’t happen, and if Rodgers is truly pushing for that, he’s way out of line.) Third, they can hold firm, forcing Rodgers to do something more than make vague, passive-aggressive comments, bristle when reporters notice and interpret his words, and then act like everything is fine even though there should be no doubt at this point that it isn’t. (They also could, in theory, give him the contract he wants. It seems too late for that, however.)

Ultimately, Rodgers treads lightly because (in my opinion) he desperately doesn’t want to be viewed as a pariah by Packers fans. As the pot quickly has gone from simmer to boiled over, some Packers fans already are turning on him — blaming him and not the team for the current situation.

  1. I really hope this whole situation burns the bridge and Rodgers leaves Wisconsin.

  2. As good as Rodgers is, I don’t think the organization is going to choose him over Gute. I am sure he even knows this, and this is just another ploy to eventually get them to trade or release him.

  3. Fans have wanted Gutekunst fired for a year now. That’s not at all out of line.

  4. “Hey guys, we seem to be stuck at the NFCCG; better draft a replacement for the guy carrying us there every year….”

  5. Packers can’t let ANY diva player push them around like this. Get him outta there. Russell Wilson went to Wisconsin. Hmmm. GBay would have to add something(32 vs 37, contracts etc.)

  6. If history is any indication, Rodgers will be back in 2021, the Packers will win 14 games, and the damn defense will blow it for them in the NFC title game.

  7. They should let him retire but I’m sure that cooler heads will prevail and they’ll do what’s best- trade him to the Raiders for players/ picks.

  8. I don’t know what will happen, but if Rodgers “retires” and Love starts this season and isn’t immediately great, Gutekunst will look reallllly stupid.

  9. I love Aaron Rodgers as the Packers’ quarterback… but he can’t be allowed to dictate front office personnel.

  10. The Packers have done him dirty. They haven’t given him help in years and expect him to carry the team. He has done that, above expectations, but he doesn’t block or catch. Nor does he play defense. The Packers have had two HOF QBs and wasted their talents with inept drafting. Getting Love was just the kick in the nuts

  11. He is absolutely correct, the GM should be given his walking papers. The guy is an ego maniac who will turn the franchise into the laughing stock of the NFC north within 2 years. And perhaps it’s time to let Mark Murphy go too.

  12. It’s sad to see Rodgers starting to collapse mentally and emotionally after all this time with his passive/aggressive behavior. The Packers have provided the offense with plenty of skilled players to help Aaron over the years – Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb, Jermichael Finley, Eddie Lacy, Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, Jared Cook, Robert Tonyan, etc. Most Packer fans have had it with his behavior and wish he would just go away. I hope he can get the mental health help he needs.

  13. He won the MVP
If that doesn’t warrant a two year extension then the Pack will have to deal with the consequences
Spend the money, give AR his two years and let him ride off into the sunset with JL waiting in the wings

  14. I juat it a little ironic that the guy who was drafted as the heir apparent to an established starter is blowing his stack at the team drafting the heir apparent.

  15. While no player should dictate management personnel decisions, I can at least see the point in dissatisfaction with Gutey. Would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall when Gutey flew out to visit this offseason.

  16. Gutekunst’s drafts have not been all that impressive … I’d rather watch Aaron play than to see Gute’s mug. Time to bring back Elliot Wolf.

  17. Long time GB fan here from Wisco. If this is TRUE, It’s time to let Rodgers take his song and dance elsewhere. No player is bigger than the team. Plus It’s no mystery that Rodgers is a big time odd ball. Maybe it’s time he goes elsewhere and acts Odd.

  18. Good thing the packers “owners” would never allow Rodgers to be traded because of all the power they have in the organization.

  19. A-Rod doesn’t seem to understand that Gutekunst is his boss. Since when does the employee tell the boss who to hire?

  20. As a Vikings fan, this is hilarious. There’s Trouble in Titletown!

  21. Smart move by Aaron. You call for the head of the guy that can facilitate you getting traded. Gutekunst’s smartest move would be to ship the threat to his job out of town. I think Aaron is playing chess.

  22. And I thought nothing would beat the Favre drama. Boy… was I wrong

  23. By far the worst GM in the division! I enjoy my favorite team pounding the packers into submission every year!

  24. There is probably no truth in this. Even Prince AAron would not believe the Packers organization will cow tow to this arrogant jerk.

  25. I knew it was a terrible move in 2018 signing Ted Jr. You can confirm it on my social medias. Can’t expect different results from 2014/2016 with the same Front Office. Gutekunst got the job because he’s a stooge, not a great GM. The Core was already there before he got the job. Gutekunst is the clown that ruined Titletown.

  26. Go ahead and retire im quite sure the Packers will survive without you.

  27. I question the veracity of this story. Like him or not, Rogers is not dumb and this supposed “leak” doesn’t really help his cause. This seems more like something that is coming from someone with an axe to grind.

  28. With almost any other player i would agree, the team should not give in. But in this case, no matter your opinion of Rogers, he has been wronged. They have never given him the help other qbs at his level get. They have let rogers take the heat and blame for all the teams short comings when they never gave him any high level help. Sure Rogers has made a lot of players look good. Adams is a good player Rogers makes look great. Give him another qb and promise he doesnt look as good. They never pick offensive players in the first round of the draft, except when they take a qb.

Imo Rogers has done more with less than any other top tier qb (other than brady, but even he had gronk and moss) the team seems treat him like he is dispenseable and lets not forget they took 2 full seasons away from his career and because of that he will never get to the statistical greatness he should have. For all that they have done to him and all that he did for him they should do the right thing and move him to a team that he is cool with. They will get a haul no matter who it is.

No matter how the media wants to portray it because of their personal biases, the packers are the bad guys here.

And im an eagles fan who finds rogers to be a bit of diva and wouldnt want him on my team.

  29. IIRC, the theory behind Gutekunst drafting Love was it was done to motivate Rodgers. It appears Aaron played the long game here, chose not to pout and overreact, went out and won his MVP title and then made his move. If this proves true, I have to admit, I really appreciate Aaron’s style.

  30. Fan: I’ll take “Quarterbacks who have no Receivers” for $100, Aaron.
Aaron: “This GM drafted CB Kevin King, who cost the Packers a playoff game.”
    Fan: “Who is Brian Gutekunst?”
Aaron: “That’s exactly what I said.”

  31. Mark Schlereth, quoting whom he described as an excellent source, told Pat McAfee this week that a trade of Rodgers to the Broncos is a eyelash from being a done deal. Because of Rodgers’ huge contract, the trade will not happen before June 2 to minimize the cap and/or dead money hit, but Schlereth, who has a talk show in Denver, seemed certain that the trade would happen.

  32. Rodgers is a petulant dude. However, GB did botch this whole process. Gutekunst’s comments after drafting Amari Rodgers showed how much of a goober he is.

  33. You really think Denver passed on fields because they were good with Teddy and drew lock?

The orange rush Rodgers jerseys are on stand by.

  34. Say what you want Mike but I’m on Rodgers’ side here. Drafting Love was dumb, but Gute could’ve redeemed himself by (1) trading Love (2) giving Rodgers a raise and/or more guaranteed money. He failed to do that too.

So no, Rodgers is not out of line.

  35. “That definitely shouldn’t happen”

Shouldn’t it? Gutekunst is, to all appearances, incompetent and has utterly failed to take advantage of having a HOF QB on the roster.

They just drafted a 3rd-round WR, the highest they’ve drafted one in the last EIGHT years. Rodgers has thrown one career pass to a first-round receiver.

Rodgers is worth a lot more to the team than Gutekunst, and Gutekunst’s bafflingly passive-aggressive drafting, year in and year out, would have earned him a pink slip years ago if not for Rodgers making the team successful.

  36. Not that it’s his place to dictate who gets hired or fired, but objectively, their GM does not seem to be particularly good at his job. If I was one of the employees working for an organization who also happened to be extremely good at my job, I would want lousy employees fired and better ones hired who would also be really good at their jobs which ultimately leads to overall organizational success. If there were only 32 companies in he world for whom I could apply my trade (and I’ve done it at a Hall-of-Fame level), my level of expectation for others in the company I work for would be extremely high. That doesn’t seem unreasonable, especially since my career can only be done for a finite amount of time.

  37. A trade before this season makes no sense. What are the Broncos going to give you? Surtain and a couple of future 1’s? Those 1’s are garbage 1’s. They’ll be bottom 6 picks at best. Maybe all that plus Chubb. I don’t care how disgruntled he is I don’t believe for a second that he’ll sit the season.

  38. fire the guy who built a roster that appeared in two straight conference title games?? Rodgers might NOT be that bright. Case closed.

  39. gutey plunged & twisted the knife by drafting WR A. Rodgers then telling everyone they s/b happy now.

  40. …and I want this coach fired. That one fan who looked at me weird to be banned from Lambeau Field. And a slushy after every game. With my name in the cup. And a paper straw.

  41. Honestly I couldn’t care less about how packers fans feel about this. They have had two incredible talents at the most important position in the game and wanna be like, “what have you done for me lately?” Truth is only one team wins it all. Even with Favre and Rodgers they only got what they got. Makes me think it’s a team sport, He should be upset they haven’t drafted better. Don’t think he’s really cool for the flex. But I see his point of view.

  42. Florio needs to get more info on the contract extension before pushing that narrative. Rodgers has the highest cap charge in the NFL. Is he trying to be the highest paid player in the NFL again? Or is he offering to take a team friendly deal that pushes his cap charges way out and let’s the team load up around him? Like Brady has done for years… Aaron has never been that guy before. And he shouldn’t trust Gute to load up anyway. But an extension doesn’t make sense unless it is an all in load up scenario.

    1. There’s no way GB is getting Surtain. Keep dreaming.
    2. There’s no way they get multiple firsts. They’ll be lucky if they fetch a first round next year for a disgruntled 37 year old QB.

  44. Well at least he didn’t insist the team massage therapist be fired.

  45. If Aaron has that much confidence in his play why is he scared of a second year quarterback who wasn’t around for any minicamps over the last year?????

What is the front office doing to get the Packers over the NFC Championship game hump? Draft a QB in the 1st round who didn’t even dress for a single game. The next season what do you do? Draft a center to replace the one you let walk. Let me know how this is getting better. Fine list of names. Most haven’t played for the Packers in years. Aaron Jones is a good receiver, but he is paired with a group of receivers that are all sub-par. Again, tell me how what they are doing is going to get them to the SB. Are they fielding a better team each season?

As a Vikings fan, this is hilarious. There’s Trouble in Titletown!

    ——
And your Vikings still have never won a SB

  48. The Packers already turned down the #3 pick this year “plus more.” And the 49ers gave up 3 #1 picks to get that pick. How do Broncos fanatics think they are going to get the reigning MVP for less than that?!?

  49. Lot of big talkers in here about respect and what not.

If your team could get Rodgers by firing the GM, you’d help the GM pack.

  50. “The Packers have given Rodgers no help!” “He has no one to throw to!”
Yet somehow the Packers keep winning division titles. How many NFCCG’s?
I love it. The entire Packers roster thanks you for the chip.
This is a team, not one guy.
Against the Buc’s, Rodgers overthrew MVS on a second 50 yard touchdown. He made a bad decision on third and goal throwing a hopeless pass instead of running down to the two or three yard line. Yes, King blew it (with help from Pettine). Jones coughed it up on a tremendous defensive hit. Bottom line, you win as a team, you lose as a team.

  51. Am I the only one who wonders if the drafting of Love was such a hard slap to the face, why this drama didn’t play out last year? There’s something else at work, whether it’s just money or his (other) main squeeze or whatever.

    ******************************************************************
Yeah, there is, along with 4 Superbowl Trophies. How’s it going in Minny, have they fired their coach or found a QB yet?

  53. GB could have received multiple 1s for Rodgers this off-season. As Rodgers has the ability to opt out after 2021, GB likely won’t be able to get multiple 1s for him at this point.

The best thing for GB to do is toss Love into the pan and see what he can do. There’s no sense in having another NFC championship game run only for Rodgers to opt out.

If you’re committed to changing your team, it doesn’t make sense to pull a LA Chargers move and win your final 4 games. That dropped the Chargers from 3 to 13th in the NFL draft and that was worth a couple extra first round picks as the 49ers showed.

  54. That feeling when you despised Favre for the first four years of your career, only to become Favre…

  55. Presume the Texans will send some sort of a fruit basket to the packers for supplanting them as the drama filled franchise at the moment. Wow.
So packers, you wanted to play games with your quarterback, draft a successor when reinforcements are needed not an heir apparent. If I might suggest you decided to play with someone who is used to winning a lot, and he appears to be leading on points at the moment. You made a mess out of a clean situation, enjoy.

  56. Now, he’s starting to lose me. I want to see and hear him say it. Otherwise……………

  57. The people that run the Jeopardy show must be watching saying this guy comes here and then who’s he gonna want to get fired here? Nah.. No thanks Roger.

  58. Aaron Rodgers fails to recognize that the Packers are a corporation, and the REAL POWER exists with the SHAREHOLDERS. He needs to gather their support to force change.

  59. Why should Rodgers expect the fans to side with him when he wants to break his contract? If he were playing like crap he wouldn’t offer the Packers a refund, would he? The fact that he’s simply doing his job doesn’t mean that he should demand more money simply because he’s done what he’s been handsomely paid for. When it’s time to negotiate a new deal, that’s when Rodgers should exert whatever leverage he has.

  60. I hope all the young qb’s in the draft are watching, and taking notes from the behavior of Watson, Wilson and Rogers how to keep your personal agenda above the teams.

Seriously, how far are we from a qb demanding he make the personnel decisions? I mean, they pretty already think they do, but just give them the title already.

Cheese necks have to be loving this…

  61. As a fake owner with worthless stock, I think the Packers should have taken the 49ers’ offer…

  62. I just think it will be best for everyone if they trade Rodgers. Sure, he could go to a team and do what Brady did last year, but that’s where they are. Rodgers is currently an MVP type QB, and the Packers, instead of getting much needed help on the OLine, drafted a project QB in the first round last year. Love is more of a third string QB. The GM should have been fired on the spot. Rodgers knows what’s best for the team. The guys running the show are clueless.

  63. I am tired of this crap the Packers have not given him any help. They had the #1 offense last year.

  64. Will green bay cave? Nobody would ever respect them again . lol

  65. Long overdue! Go ahead and let the door hit you where the good lord split you!! Take Murphy with you as well! Packer management could screw up a free lunch!

  66. Suppose the team does fire the GM. Rodgers wants to pick the next GM? Why does the gm have an obligation to give aaron a heads up about drafting a quarterback? It’s the NFL, every player should know that the team is looking for a replacement. The team should not draft to help Aaron. The goal is to build a winning team. The goal is not getting “aaron” another championship. Had aaron put a championship as a priority then aaron would have waited until ryan did his deal to make that sure that aaron’s new deal is more.

  67. Well at least homeboy got a ring, that’s more than I can say, I never won the Super Bowl.

  68. Sets a bad precedent for the players to be making front office decisions

  69. So they won’t give him a 2 year contract with the team and they won’t trade him? I’d be upset if I was left in limbo like that. Either commit to him or don’t.

  70. If he wants him fired it is NOT out of line. Sometimes relationships are irreparable

  71. There is a big difference between saying you won’t play for the GM again and saying they should fire him. These reports are all over the place, and many of them have turned out to be wrong. Pretty tough to fire the GM in a situation like this. But after doing nothing in FA the last two off-seasons to improve the team and getting next to nothing out of his rookie class while the Bucs, Chiefs and Rams are going all in, I wouldn’t be sad to see him go. Yes back-to-back strong seasons, but most of the top talent he inherited, he took a healthy cap surplus and maxed it out, and the Matt LaFleur hire was Mark Murphy.

  72. LeBron James of football! Guy is the best player in the game, but wants to run the organization. Just play ball.

  73. The only thing worse than GB not drafting a WR last year was that the Eagles passed Justin Jefferson!

  74. I still lay the blame at the feet of the GM. He was one who traded up to get Love in the draft in 2020, instead of getting weapons to help Rodgers and the team win in the postseason.

It would be one thing if Rodgers’ performance was starting to decline, so they picked up his successor. But Rodgers is still performing at an elite level and the Packers organization is wasting these valuable years.

  75. Ask Carson Wentz if a player can force his big cap hit outta town cos he hated the coach, gm owner.

  76. If history is any indication, Rodgers will be back in 2021, the Packers will win 14 games, and the damn defense will blow it for them in the NFC title game.
    __________________________________________________________________________
    Defense had 3 straight ints…stop.

  77. He’s just pissed off because the GM – Gut didn’t trade him. He’s acting like a little child who is used to having his way. Send him a message. Let him sit out. He’s trying to play cards he shouldn’t even have.

  78. No way they fire Brian Gutekunst. Just think of the precedent that would set not only for the Packers but the whole league. I don’t even think it’s as much about the Packers as some are making it out to be. He wants to be on the west coast and leave on his own terms rather than being replaced. He clearly wants out though and this is a way to put it on the organization rather than himself. It’s not like you can just act like nothing happened and let him lead the team after all of this though. The Packers need to trade him and get as much as they can.

  79. Is this what Packers call better football for better people? 😆 🤣 😂

  80. Packer fans…Is this what Packers call better football for better people? 😆 🤣 😂

  81. Brady effect! Quarterbacks see what Brady did and how happy he is, but do not have forever or do not want to play as long as Brady. The GM made a poor evaluation on the qb situation and threw away a 1st round pick when if they were going to trade up, could have drafter a premiere receiver that year. The only reason the GM is not paying for his decision is because the team kept winning due to ARod.sobif you cannot evaluate him based off a lack of wins, what do you make the evaluation. GM is replaceable, but ARod is not at least not for the coming year. Do the Packers and the GM make a mistake again or does the president do what is best for the football product itbis putting on the field next year. If this GM would have had his way, no way the Packers are as good as they have been. Good for my Bucs though so keep it going. Who would have thought of the 2 Bays that Tampa would be the most desirable while GB is turning into a dumpster fire.

Who would have thought of the 2 Bays that Tampa would be the more desirable while GB is turning into a dumpster fire.

  83. How many games would the Pack win with Love at QB for the next two seasons? I’d guess less than 8 a season. How many do they win with a happy Rodgers at QB? I’d guess at least 12 per season. Rodgers is elite, Love is an unproven commodity. So the question for the organization is do two potential trips to the Super Bowl sound better than keeping the inept Gutekunst? Washington had a similar dilemma and chose to stick with the inept Bruce Allen and let the best QB they’d had in decades walk. Their team was a dumpster fire for years after and is only now recovering.

  84. I don’t know any Packers fans that are turning in Rodgers. Most of the fans are on Rodgers side and rightfully so. When a GM has a HOF caliber QB playing at a high level yet wasted a 1st round pick in a 7th round project that looked mediocre in one of the weakest divisions in the NCAA that GM definitely should be fired.

  85. Why is Rodgers “way out of line” to want to determine who is/isn’t the GM of the Packers when Florio was in support of Watson determining who was/wasn’t the GM and HC of the Texans? It is far easier for the team to replace the GM than it is to replace an elite level QB.

  86. Man O Man, Trouble in Cheeseland. What would the Packers do without him?

  87. Rodgers thinks his last name is Brady. It isn’t and never will be.

  88. 3 way trade….Packers trade Rogers and 20 buxom massage therapists/escorts to Houston for Watson.

Houston trades Rodgers to Denver for Bridgewater, Chubb and 2 number one picks.

  89. And everyone thought my Browns were a carnival side show…….
You can’t script this stuff !!!!!!
This is far and away more intriguing 🤔 and more fun to watch than anything the FORMER Factory of Sadness ever produced!!!!
    Go Browns !!!!

  90. They need Rodgers more than he needs them. Instead of Packers fans getting mad at Rodgers, they should be mad at the GMs over the years who gave him very little help and had bad teams. Any normal and rational fan would understand why he was mad that the only 1st round pick they had in the last 8 years was his replacement

It was TT but like many Packer posts, this one is also filled with nonsense and just WRONG information.

Gute has done VERY well drafting, Jaire, Jenkins, Savage, Scott, others showing growth like Gary MVS, also finding like a guy like Lazard that adds depth and toughness to the WR group. I have said it many times, Gute drafts for the PACKERS, not for Aaron Rodgers, he may not like it, but great GMs need to make unpopular choices at times, whether its cutting a Josh Sitton or Jordy Nelson, or trading a HOF QB like Favre.
