Several 49ers players called Kyle Shanahan to tell him they were alive Sunday

Jimmy Garoppolo survived until Sunday . . . and he remains on the 49ers roster.

Other players on the team are alive, too.

Kyle Shanahan knows for certain because a group of them called the 49ers coach to let him know, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports. It is unknown whether Garoppolo was one of those.

Shanahan, of course, tried to answer a question about whether Garoppolo would have a place on the roster after the draft. The 49ers used the third overall choice on North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, the heir apparent to Garoppolo.

Shanahan later admitted he “totally bombed” his answer.

“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday. So, that goes for all of us,” Shanahan said Monday.

His cute answer elicited a hilarious response for many of his players, and Shanahan isn’t likely to live it down — pun intended — anytime soon.

  1. I am alive and hope to watch the next three seasons as well along with the next couple lost first round draft round draft selection slots vrs the QB pick. KS and JL must hit this one out of the park and improve on early round selections or join Mike Shananan in retirement. No improvement over Harbaugh and Baalke at this time

  2. He answered that question almost as well as he coached in the super bowl

  3. Rodgers in the Bay would have been awesome. As a Packers fan I would hate to see him go but the FO has been so reluctant to help him or Favre win a SB by wasting away their primes.

GB= Good Bye to Rodgers and any other Hall of Fame QB that may come here again.

  4. But wait, I thought the locker room was going to be divided now? Sounds to me like everyone is having fun. You don’t call and have a little fun pranking your coach if you hate him.

  5. This shows that those players don’t respect him. He is losing the locker room.

  6. This great because it provides insight to the player-coach dynamic. Coaches don’t mind when their players rib them in a respectful manner. Hey coach, it’s me…I’m alive!

  7. Sorry. Gonna have to try harder than that to beat the Packers at draft day drama. They kind of dominated the competition this year leaning on the elite talent they have at qb. He took his team on his back and led them to a championship.

  8. Players: Coach, I’m alive.

Shanahan: Okay. Let’s talk tomorrow…just to be sure.

  9. He will live that down…what he wont live down is 28-3…run the ball coach!!

  10. Shanahan “alive” comment came when he was trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t tip his hand. He, and the other Niners, did a great job of misleading the media regarding who they were going to pick. Shanahan has been talking nonsense, on purpose, for weeks.

And guess what? It worked. NObody knew who the Niners were going to pick….and they got their guy. I expect Lance to be a top NFL QB in about 3 years.

  11. Yeah sure, Kyle, you were so committed to Trey Lance that you were begging for Aaron Rodgers the night before the draft. Lance who probably wouldn’t have gone at 3 and could have been gotten at 6. Have fun with all that Kyle.

  12. SHanahan was committed to Lance IN THE DRAFT. But a coach would have to be a fool to not see if he could land last year’s MVP. Good coaches can do more than one thing at a time.

The Niners are as strong or stronger than they were when they went to the Super Bowl in 2020. Adding Rodgers would have made them the odds-on favorites to win a Super Bowl.

Lance will be great in Shanahan’s offense. Seattle might only be the third best in that division.
