The Broncos are preparing for a quarterback competition that will span the next few months.

Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said he’ll give incumbent starter Drew Lock and new arrival Teddy Bridgewater equal time with the first-team offense in Organized Team Activities and training camp, with both of them having a chance to earn the starting job.

“It will be something that at the end of the day, maybe not at the end of every day but over the course of OTAs and training camp, it’ll be 50-50,” Fangio said, via Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver.

Although the Broncos are one of the top candidates to land Aaron Rodgers should the Packers trade him, with the Packers insisting that Rodgers is staying put, for now it’s a Bridgewater-Lock quarterback competition.

  1. This Bronco fan sees it as a race to the back of the line. Last year Lock was 26th and Teddy was 27th.

  2. Bottom line: the Broncos need a QB.
If Fields or Jones or any of the others is a good QB then Elway set the team back a year.
It will be harder to get a QB if they win an extra game or two with Bridgewater.
8-9 is hard to get a QB.

  3. if teddy is in the mix to be a starter you don’t have a starting qb on your team lol

  4. It won’t matter as Denver will be picking in the bottom 3 of 2022 draft and they can try again a for a QB

  5. Here’s what I see happening. The Broncos trade for Aaron Rodgers after June 1. That’s why they took so long on their pick. They were working out a deal that will be announced then. Drew Lock will be part of the trade. Lock looked good in Scangarello’s offense. Matt Lafleur is also from the same coaching tree as Scangarello. So maybe Lock can thrive in Green Bay.

  6. As a life long Chiefs fan I never thought I would say this but I feel bad for you Broncos fans.

  7. The only team with a worse QB situation is the Texans. Teddy is a ok QB but the Panthers moved on from him after one season. This tells you everything you need to know.

  8. Teddy is going to be the starter and will do well with his best supporting cast since the Saints in 2019.

  9. I have a lot of respect for Bridgewater because he’s such a tough guy to battle back from the awful injury he had and get back on the field.

That said, over his career he’s averaged 1 TD pass a game and he didn’t have a lot of rushing TDs before that injury and certainly won’t put his legs at risk tryin to get many now.

1 TD a game does not even begin to cut it in the modern NFL passing league with the rules protecting QBs. The top QBs are all minimum 2 TDs a game average with many games with more than that bringing most of them to 2.5 or 3 a game. Top 5 last year Rodgers 48 TDs, Wilson and Brady 40, Mahomes 38, Allen 37. Bridgewater 15 games 15 TDs.

Teddy is a good solid backup, but he just isn’t a great starter at the NFL level.

  10. I am still shocked as a Bears fan that both Carolina and Denver traded for mediocre QBs right before the draft, taking them out of the Fields sweepstakes. Talk about the stars aligning.

  11. The competition will end on or about June 2 when the trade of Aaron Rodgers to the Broncos will be consummated. Either Bridgewater — he’s more likely — or Luck will be part of the package Denver sends to the Packers. This is happening. All signs point to it.

  12. It’s risky to move off Drew, his TD shuffle/dance is more polished. I’m not saying Teddy can’t get there, but Drew’s celebrations are on a different level.

  13. If John Elway had been running a lot of super bowl winning teams, they’d have never gotten to the super bowl. He pulls the plug on every QB too soon. Terry Bradshaw would have been cut by Elway. Same with Troy Aikman. I could go on and on with QB’s that didn’t look great early in their careers. Josh Allen is perhaps the latest example. Elway isn’t alone, either. Lots of people don’t understand that it’s hard to master the NFL QB position over night. I just can’t believe that every QB they’ve drafted since Elway has been running it, has been a bust. When Elway took over, I thought he’d have an advantage when it came to the super important QB position. It’s been the exact opposite. I don’t mind admitting you were wrong and moving on, but Elway hasn’t left anyone in long enough to learn the position.

  14. Either there’s a post June 1st trade in place with Green Bay for Aaron Rodgers or the Broncos lost their minds by not drafting Fields in the 1st round.

Denver would be insane to make that deal. The Packers aren’t trading Aaron Rodgers for Drew Lock unless the deal also includes at least two No. 1 draft picks and possibly a lower pick or two. Then again, John Elway is running the team so maybe they are.
Unlike when they signed Peyton Manning, the Broncos are not merely a quarterback away from contending. As good as he still is, Rodgers isn’t going to get them there by himself. At 38, he likely doesn’t have more than two or three years left as a top QB.
Then what? A team still trying to fill holes will have face yet another Elway-style rebuild with depleted draft capital.
On the other side of the coin, you can make all the six-degrees-of-separation claims you like. Anyone who thinks Lock will become a star or even a solid starter with different coaching hasn’t been paying attention. I haven’t seen what Jordan Love can do, and neither has anyone else. I have seen enough to know what Lock can’t do.

  16. The Broncos will have the 4th best QB in the division no matter who starts. That’s a tough spot.

  17. Translation: they will both have an equal chance to stink up the field. Whichever one stinks the least will win the job.

  18. All i can say. If Aaron Rodgers forces a trade to denver-denver did the right thing in the draft.

Things could change between now and june 1.

However i thing Rodgers has the leverage.

  19. Not exactly a fork in the road that breeds a lot of confidence. Unfulfilled promise, or overestimated promise.

  20. Lock had a tough covid season. One season. One. If you think like most posters here, Peyton Manning and John Elway would be canceled after year one. I sure hope that you peoples bosses don’t think like you. You’d have a different employer every year.

  21. If Denver does not get Rogers they made a huge mistake in the draft not getting Fields. Denver biggest needs heading into the draft #1 QB #2 OT #3 coverage LB they did nothing to fill any of those positions. Last years draft picking WR’s which is dependent on QBY play was poorly thought out because they have the worst QB’s in the NFL.

  22. I don’t know why you guys bring up fields. That dude has bust written all over him.

Teddy is good qb the cast he played with was bad. He will not carry a team but he won’t be the reason you loose .

    Teddy will win that job.

  23. Fields is suppose to have epilepsy., and altitude is an issue. Denver would be chancy for his health.

  24. When Teddy Bridgewater is the answer then you should ask a different question

  25. With the 2nd pick in the 2022 NFL draft the Denver Broncos select- a QB.

  26. There isn’t a fan that doesn’t respect Teddy’s story. But the eye test shows he’s a “game manager”.. Not sure what Elway’s angle is anymore. This team is one Peyton Manning away from being an utter failure over his tenure. (Especially when Tebow was their second best QB over his stint there)

  27. List of AFC West starting and back-up QB’s.
    Chiefs: Mahomes, Chad Henne
    Raiders: Carr, Mariota
    Chargers: Herbert, Chase Daniel
    Broncos: Lock, Bridgewater

That means Broncos have the 7th and 8th best QB’s in the division… hard to see anything other than 4th place in the AFC West till they take care of that glaring need!

  28. Vic Fangio is not a HC, he should be in a DC role. The Broncos will still be better than my Raiders/Lions/Patriots and other wagon jumped teams I like though.
