The deadline for NFL teams to exercise their fifth-year contract options on 2018 first-round picks passed on Monday afternoon and 21 players had those options picked up.

Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold is part of that group. Carolina traded for Darnold last month and announced their decision on his option after the draft.

That total is higher than it was in either of the last two seasons despite the fact that the salaries for the option years are guaranteed at the time the option is picked up. Before the adoption of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, the options were guaranteed against injury only.

All of the first nine selections had their options picked up, but No. 10 pick Josh Rosen had none to exercise as he was released by the Dolphins after they picked him up in a trade with Arizona. Raiders left tackle Kolton Miller also had no option as the team has already signed him to a contract extension.

Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch was the No. 19 pick and highest pick to have his option declined. He and the other eight players who had their options declined are now on track for free agency after the 2021 season. The full list of decisions appears below:

  1. Isaiah Wynn because he started every game he was healthy enough to play.

I think Bill has a great track record drafting, signing and getting strong performance from his offensive linemen no matters where they were drafted or if the were UDFAs.

  2. Sounds like a pretty good draft with only a 35% bust rate for the 1st round picks. And only one epic bust in Josh Rosen.

  3. Just looked up Wynn’s states. He played 500 snaps in 2019 and 640 in 2020.

In 2019, he had 3 penalties and 2 sacks allowed. In 2020, he had 2 penalties and three sacks allowed.

  4. Sony Mitchell played only 9 games in 2020, but if you look at his production you could project him over 1,000 yards for the first time. And then, still in 2020, his yards per carry went to the roof (5,7).
He was a key player in the 2018 SB run. I don’t get it. Do I miss something ?

  5. I’ve already forgotten about Josh Rosen. And I liked him at UCLA.

  6. This also means these teams with qbs outperforming their rookie deals and needing an actual contract extension are likely cash poor from
pandemic and are losing leverage going into 2022.

When you are sold on your high profile player who needs a new deal, you don’t keep waiting to pay him. It only gives the high profile player more bargIning power if they truly have outperformed the rookie contract.

The tv money isn’t dus until 2022 and the league lost 5 billion dollars so all of thess teams will be overpaying up the ying yang for all players in 2022.

  7. Why not Michel has as much to do with running backs in general as it does with Michel individually. Belichick is all about “good value” and it is a position where he platoons players and doesn’t look for a three down stud. A fifth year is too rich and Michel is not versatile.

NHpats is a moron, that’s why. Wynn grades out very highly and people who know the sport know how great Scar has been picking his OL.

The next thing he’ll tell us is the rebuild is not complete after another good looking draft and a guy who isn’t even on the roster anymore from the 2014 draft, has just devastated the franchise. lol

He’s probably hating the great offseason BB has had, the drafting of Mac Jones, because it threatens his child-like fantasy of Brady being above reproach playing every positiion on the roster.

He also think the “pro bowl” is a barometer of a good player when the pro bowl has been a complete joke for 20+ years.

  9. Looks like vast majority of players after the 20th pick don’t get their fifth year option picked up.

  10. An option being declined does not mean “bust”
It just means that the player may not be worth it at this point.
    Injuries, price, other players available.

Everyone is so frantic to label someone a “bust” if they haven’t turned into a superstar and won 300 superbowls.

    Geesh…

  11. Can’t believe Davenport got his 5th picked up… absolute worst pick in the top 20.

  12. It’s not fair to write about a successful first round when Howie didn’t have a chance to drag the success numbers down…

You conveniently left out that Wynn has playing in a whopping 18 out of a possible 52 games including the postseason. Jimmy g is more reliant

Wynn has played in 34% of the games since he has been on the team. How does that “grade out”?

Now be a man and honor your agreement

  15. If the Patriots think Wynn is worth exercising his option then that is good enough for me.
