Sony Michel could be odd man out in Patriots’ backfield

This week the Patriots declined the fifth-year option on running back Sony Michel‘s contract. It’s possible Michel won’t be back for a fourth year in New England, either.

Michel, a running back chosen in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, could lose his spot on the 53-man roster if rookie Rhamondre Stevenson impresses in training camp and the preseason, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

The Patriots took Stevenson with the 120th overall pick in the draft. At Oklahoma, Stevenson was a major special teams contributor, while Michel has never played a significant role on special teams with the Patriots. That could give Stevenson a leg up if Bill Belichick is deciding between Stevenson and Michel for a final roster spot at running back.

Stevenson played only 19 games at Oklahoma and was a backup for most of his college career, but he has impressive size and versatility and has the potential to make an impact as a rookie.

  1. With very few exceptions, drafting a running back in the first round is not the way to go.

  2. He’ll be in Miami, and probably get let go again. He never could top his rookie season.

  3. Belichick doesn’t like to pay top dollar to running backs. Too many good ones around. He uses them and finds the next good rookie or released RB to pick up.

  4. Considering the high rate of injuries to running backs Sony isn’t going anywhere this year. Sony was very effective during the latter part of last season and if he can stay healthy will be an important part of the run game. Bill Belichick loves running backs that don’t fumble.

  5. No big beautiful mystery here, the Pats don’t pay their players. Yeah, that’s a fact. Am I lying? How much did the GOAT make? Not much.8

  6. Never mind Michel contributing on special teams, he has rarely contributed anything significant in the backfield.

  7. Michel makes the team because one running back will get hurt. He then will go into the compensatory picks equation in 2023.

  8. <>

The TD run in a 13-3 Super Bowl win just a couple years ago isn’t a contribution? Yikes, Pats fans deserve all the losing they’re going to do over the next couple decades.

  9. Considering he averaged 5.7 yrds a carry last year, the team better think this decision through …

  10. He played special teams down the stretch last year and was just fine. Sounds like an old gripe.

They are not going to go into the year with Harris and Stevenson as the only real ball carriers.

    Michel is making the team.

  11. all comes down to the fact that Michel simply couldn’t stay on the field;

  12. How do you scout Michel and not see that Chubb was the better back at Georgia? Thanks Dorsey for getting that pick right. There’s not a more likeable workhorse in the league.

  13. The pick that dented Belichick’s legacy. If he’d drafted aj brown or Metcalf Brady is still on the pats today and people are still saying that Brady cant do it without Belichick

  14. He has had two 900 plus yrds, seasons and averaged 5.7 yards a carry last year. The Patriots need to think through their decision …

  15. Lets not let facts get in the way. TB12 has made $298M in his career, #1 all-time. The reason he has won so much in his career is because he knows the economics of building a roster, and his wife out earns him. We saw it first hand in Tampa last year with Suh, AB, Gronk, Fournette, etc. being added. And we also see the likes of Rodgers and Wilson crying about needing more support, yet wanting to max out their salaries. The top 50 all-time is littered with guys who never won anything, so they made their choices.

  16. I think hes on the team in 2021. I think they keep Harris, Michel, White and Stevenson. Pats had 4 RBs last year, I think Stevenson just replaces Burkhard.

He missed half the season last year w COVID, then played well in the last 3 games. Ended up averaging 5.7 yards per carry for the season.

False. The NFL has spending limits. The closest the Patriots have come to the floor was last year when they cleared millions of dead cap space off their books.

Paying players is a zero sum game. The more you pay one player the less you can pay his teammates. Brady got it. He took big signing bonuses to create cap space so his teammates could get paid.

A QB taking a smaller portion of the cap gives a team a way to break the NFL system of parody (i.e. Patriots) while paying top dollar to a select few gives teams small windows to win (i.e. Seahawks). Now you have teams like Tampa borrowing against future caps to pay their teams now. That will work out splendidly.

Yeah, Dorsey really had to put all his braintrust into that one, given the fact that Michel was already off the board when he picked Chubb.

are you suggesting logic should be used here?

  21. Its all about his knee, and always has been. He might have a good year or two left, but I’d bet not much more.

  22. I’d actually be SHOCKED to see Sony released…. UNLESS there is an injury that is putting his ability to play into the picture)….Doubt that he even gets traded if he’s healthy…. Bill has been thru the multiple RB’s being injured before & that cost him in a game VS Denver…..
