Jared Goff: Lions have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL

Lions quarterback Jared Goff thinks he’s going to be playing behind an elite offensive line this season.

Goff said today that he was pumped that the Lions decided to use their first-round draft pick on offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

The Lions’ offensive line is “shaping up to be one of the top groups in the league,” Goff said.

Goff said he had some conversations with the Lions’ front office before the draft and was confident that they were not going to pick a quarterback. Whether Goff is the long-term answer for the Lions remains to be seen, but for this year, they’re building around him, rather than lining up a replacement for him.

And whoever the long-term answer is at quarterback, he should have a stable offensive line in front of him. In addition to the 20-year-old Sewell, the Lions’ projected starters this season include 24-year-old center Frank Ragnow (who just signed a contract extension through the 2026 season), 27-year-old tackle Taylor Decker (who signed a four-year contract extension less than a year ago) and guards Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg, both of whom were rookies last year. The Lions think they have their offensive line set for years to come.

  1. ….And it will be wasted on me because I’m a bottom five NFL QB.

  2. I feel sorry for Jared Goff,he’s a good guy…but any sane rational person knows he’s not the future in Detroit.

  3. Which is good because like most of his passes that statement took 7-8 seconds to be delivered.

  4. Penei could be a stud, Ragnow is very good. Taylor Decker – ehhh i guess you could do worse. Injuries and poor depth could definitely haunt them. Lions might not even have the 2nd best offensive line in their own division. Coaching and playcalling matter a lot too, can make an average unit look really good or really bad depending on those aforementioned factors.

I want to be optimistic but good grief Jared, don’t crown them just yet.

  5. Best Lions draft in a while — I haven’t been on the Lions hype since Barry Sanders retired- was never a believer in Millen Mayhew , Quinn, Patricia — I won’t get on the hype but Holmes might bring the culture change the Lions never had–

  6. A great offensive line is wasted when you have a sub-par QB and easily the worst WR’s in the NFL. Most college teams have better WR’s than the Lions right now.

  7. not sure why they went through the draft, and their best WRs are still Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams. Seems like a major whiff.

  8. Maybe the Lions should try and sign Shane Falco. He might still be available? unless Broncos beat them to it.

  9. I don’t understand why everyone is hating on Goff. I’m very happy that the Rams have Matt Stafford, but Goff isn’t a terrible QB. He has experience winning playoff games.

Lions fans may remember this differently, but I thought the issue was your defense wasn’t good to begin with and would completely fold in the 4th quarter? I think the Lions will score points, but will they outscore opposing teams? When was the last time the Lions defense pitched a shutout?

  10. Their needs on defense were more glaring. The good offensive line will help with the run game and give Goff more time.

  11. Jarred Goff is an excellent QB if he’s behind a great Oline, great receivers and great running game.
Give him 6+ seconds to throw and he is excellent.

    And so are many QBs.
