Deatrich Wise: Patriots learned from last year and we’re hungry to win

Defensive lineman Deatrich Wise spent his first four seasons as a regular in the Patriots lineup before hitting free agency earlier this year and his time on the open market wound up sending him back to New England.

Wise signed a four-year deal to stay in New England and said on Thursday that the atmosphere and culture of the team proved to be too enticing to pass up. Wise’s feelings were shared by other teammates like Lawrence Guy, David Andrews, and James White as well as a slew of free agent additions to the roster.

Wise said that the players who were around for the 7-9 season in 2020 learned things they didn’t learn when the Patriots were riding high and that the entire roster shares the same goal regardless of how they came to the team.

“The guys in the locker room are hungry,” Wise said, via NESN.com. “Whether they’re rookies, whether they didn’t play last year, whether they were on a different team, everybody’s coming here for one goal, and that’s to win. That’s what I really appreciate about all the guys coming back — we all want to win. And if we’re not winning, we’re learning. Last year was a big learning process. We learned from it. Now, the main mindset is to win.”

There has been a lot of winning in New England over the last two decades. Last season put a halt to that and the 2021 campaign will show if that was an aberration or if the tide has truly turned for the Patriots.

  1. “Wise said, via NESN.com. “Whether they’re rookies, whether they didn’t play last year, whether they were on a different team, everybody’s coming here for one goal, and that’s to win.” Whew!!! Thank goodness, I was worried they were all coming there with the intention of losing. There’s the Patriots secret out in the open. They all want to win while the other 31 teams don’t.

  2. I am not sure where the money came from but BB went out in free agency and restocked this team with an infusion of talent. I don’t like him and the Patriots but I wouldn’t bet against him.

  3. The slew of free agents signed bc NE had the most capital. Nothing else. They are e not the class of the division. Buffalo is but they will
Need to play their best to win the division. New England has fallen back to be on par with the rest of the league. It is what it is

  4. The Patriots definitely learned from last year. They learned that Tom Brady was a very integral part of them winning the games they did.

  5. I think we all learned that Tom Brady was the engine to that machine.

  6. The only way the Patriots will return to dominance (or some form thereof) is if Mac Jones can emerge as a top quarterback in this league. I don’t think it will be this year because that’s not the way Belichick operates. He’ll allow the kid to get acclimated while Cam Newton stays in the lead role, provided that Newton can do better than multiple game efforts not looking like 9 completions on 23 attempts for 85yds.

If that happens regularly, then we’d better see some changes quickly.

  7. Even though he hasn’t met any of the rookies, Wise knows they only came here to win. Also, I happen to know for a fact that no other team from the Patriots wants to win like they do.

  8. New England has fallen back to be on par with the rest of the league.

Do you know why Belichick’s believers give so much credits to Belichick? Belichick was able to use his QI from his stomach to slow down defenders. That is why you shouldn’t bet against him.

  9. Anyone who thinks that last season was the start of a prolonged slide in New England is in for a rude awakening. With free agency and the draft, Belichick, the GOAT G.M., has assembled a championship contender.

  10. Sounds like Dietrich Wise received a lukewarm reception in the free agent market.

  11. Ahhhhh… You ALL want the greatest dynasty in sports history to be over just like that?

Sorry, but after taking last year off it’s time to regain the the throne!!

  12. “It takes talent to win” is a pretty easy theory to grasp. They should be improved this coming season but they may learn another lesson, namely “You can improve and still not be better than your rivals.”

  13. The greatest dynasty in sports history are the New York Yankees. It’s not even close.

  14. I’m not sure the Packers have what I’d call ‘leverage’ – especially given what they might have to trot out there at QB this year if Rodgers isn’t in uniform. Joni Mitchell sang it best …”you don’t know what you got until it’s gone …” We Packer fans are spoiled – we’ve seen nothing but pretty good QB play for 3 decades. Without Aaron, this season would be a gigantic slap in the face – by reality. *I would hope the Packers see this morning’s segment with Florio and Peter King – it’s a roadmap to settling this thing.

    Montreal Canadiens, eh?

  16. The “win now” attitude has a price to be paid down the road in terms of cap spending. Hopefully that’s behind them now.

Dream on. Buffalo will make them look like a D-2 team. You must have been watching reruns from 2019 when you wrote that line.

    “Eh” no.

Hands down the New York Yankees. No other team in any professional sport has yet to get within a mile of the Yankees.

The Canadians were incredible. I grew up on those teams in the 60s and 70s. Cournyer, Beliveau, Richard … Incredible, but not Yankees incredible.

  19. Two things can be true at once, TB12 is, was, and always will be the GOAT, BB is, was, always will. be in the top two or three coaches of all time. That ship has sailed of them being tied at the hip. The current Patriots roster as constructed SHOULD be able to compete at a championship level. The D was ranked 7th in the league last year, and they have significantly improved in the front 7. On offense, no matter if you like Cam or not, or think he can still play or not, if your honest, you knew he had guys working at UPS to throw to. They addressed a lot in FA, enough to so that I think they are back in the playoffs.

  20. BB is, was, always will. be in the top two or three coaches of all time.

    ———————————-

That would be the case if he had resigned when Brady left. If he stays for another 3-4 years, it will change.

  21. If BB wants to protect his legacy as the best HC ever, he should leave now. He should have have taken his cue from Brady.

Until the Patriots prove they can win without Brady they aren’t even with in spitting distance of the NY Yankees when it comes to being the best pro sports team ever. They aren’t even in spitting distance of the Celtics.

The ship is listing. By Christmas it will have capsized.

  22. Until the Patriots prove they can win without Brady they aren’t even with in spitting distance of the NY Yankees when it comes to being the best pro sports team ever. Funny all I ever heard was brady was a system qb who had to cheat etc now every game they won was solely due to brady . You people who dislike the Pat’s are a trip.

  23. The Patriots could have won more SBs had Belichick valued Brady and supplied him with better players. Now BB realized that Brady is now out of the building and his pride is on the line, thus the stocking up of competitive players. BB intends to win the next SB to salvage his reputation. Brady proved his worth away from BB.
