The Eagles claimed running back Kerryon Johnson off waivers from the Lions, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Johnson, 23, will join a running backs room that includes Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell and Jordan Howard.

The Lions made Johnson a second-round choice in 2018.

Johnson is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and has a salary of $1.37 million this season.

He was limited to 18 games in his first two seasons with the team because of injuries before playing all 16 games in 2020. But Johnson saw his fewest carries of any season in his career, however, as D'Andre Swift and Adrian Peterson took most of the work.

In three seasons in Detroit, Johnson played 34 games with 16 starts and had 344 touches for 1,752 yards and 11 touchdowns.

  1. You forgot to mention the # 1 running back in the room -Miles Sanders!

  2. thats 5.09 yards per carry which is a very decent number, hopefully he can overcome the injuries and make it to a second contract to provide for him and his family–

  3. he was waived but is under contract?

    i dont get it and i dont get what the union DOES for the players if anything…

    Don’t forget RB1 Miles Sanders!

    What about miles sanders? Lol

    I know it felt like Boston Scott’s backfield at times though.

  6. Lions fan here. This is a bit of a head-scratcher. Running theory is that KJ asked to be released when he saw he was going to be relegated to RB#3. Not a great RB by any stretch, but he can pass block, and catch a few passes, and run a little – when healthy.

  7. Best of luck to him. The injuries killed him and he no longer has any burst. But he is still a great guy, funny too, just check his twitter, solid hands in the passing game and a fantastic blocker on 3rd down. I actually though he would end up in LA with Staff.

  8. I didn’t think he would clear waivers & get to be a free agent. Great pickup for the Eagles. They get a motivated RB in his final year of his contract. He will not only have the proverbial chip on the shoulder, he will need to produce in order to get a contract offer in free agency. If he does prove to be valuable, the Eagles can negotiate an extension before then. If he doesn’t play well, they only lost this year’s money.

  9. “he was waived but is under contract?”

    He didn’t clear waivers. The Eagles will pick up his contract.

  10. So the backfield will be Sanders, Gainwell, and then it’s pick ’em: Howard, Kerryon, or Scott. I say Scott goes.

  11. If he can stay healthy, he’s a great player. If he stayed healthy he wouldn’t be available.

  12. Is it just me, or do every year the Eagles and Dolphins always sign a FA running back and draft one?

    Thanks. I still think the union is pathetic and can’t believe they agreed to this but I never knew this was how it worked.

    Is this only with rookie contracts????

  14. Surprised that the Lions cut him. My guess is that they want a guy at RB3 to play special teams and Johnson doesn’t because of his knees.

  15. another Whirlpool Wonder gone from Detroit;

    now the Eagles have 165lb. 4.5-forty receiver with the upper body strength of a noodle and the body of Twiggy and a castoff RB with one good knee, no cut and no burst; a disgruntled former All-Pro TE and a front office in disarray if not outright civil war;

    the only team they’ll beat in their division is Dallas, just like last year;

    It’s service years. Don’t quote me but i think after you have 4 years played, if you’re cut you’re a flat out free agent. If you are still under that then the rest of the league has the option to pick that contract up in order of worst to first. So the worst team gets the first chance to pick it.

    It’s actually not terrible for the player or the league. For the teams it keeps the rookie scale in place and for the player, he gets to keep his full contract. Otherwise most guys that get cut at that age would be getting one year minimums. Its a lot better than baseball where its 7 years of service before you can be a free agent without waivers.

    The players have a lot to complain about when it comes to their cb deal, this really isnt one of those things.

  17. Can he play cornerback? I thought the Eagles didn’t have much money to spend and were going to sign a much needed outside cornerback.

  18. They are quickly building a winner in Detroit, getting rid of guys that don’t put forth maximum effort…meanwhile in Philly we let our SuperBowl MVP QB leave, fire the coach that won the SuperBowl, trade our franchise QB for a 2nd round pick, pay him 34MM in dead cap money, draft Ortega Whiteside over Metcalf, draft Raegor over Jefferson, move up to take a 165 pound WR, our 2nd round pick was injured 4 years in a row, and now we pick up a RB that can’t stay healthy. I simply don’t understand how our GM is not accountable.
