Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert: “None of us know” whether this is Ben Roethlisberger’s last year

The coming football season could be the final one for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Or maybe it won’t be.

“I think Ben’s mindset is he’s focused on 2021 as we all are,” Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert recently told PFT PM. “I think we all go into it. We focus on now. We see where things lead. Beyond that, none of us know.

“Obviously, Ben’s at the back end of his career. He was terribly disappointed the way we ended, the way he ended. Shortly after the end of the season, he came to us and said, ‘Listen, I want to be back.’ Of course, we had to work on some things contractually. Honestly, he set off a nice little surge because we had several players that were able to come back to us. Ben led the way by taking that pay cut.”

Roethlisberger gave up $5 million with no way to earn it back via incentives, and he’s due to become a free agent in 2022. If he keeps playing, he’ll undoubtedly play for the Steelers or no one. Whatever happens in 2021 will surely influence his decision for 2022.

  1. This is right up there with the wisdom that Shanahan enlightened us all with; we don’t know who will be here this coming Sunday.

  2. Road to the Super Bowl starts with Ben the run game and the defense. Glad he’s back.

  3. Decisions based on his performance? Hmmm? Whoever heard of such a thing!

  4. Do the Steelers suddenly think this guy is going to revert to his 2014 form? It’s over – it’s been over for a long time.

  5. Really? Is there any doubt? Have watched any tape? He’s done. Put a fork in him. He may be OK for a few games but then he’ll wear out. Buffet Ben doesn’t really pride himself on his training regime. And with no improvement in the offensive line, it may be sooner than later. He should’ve just waddled off, crying, into the sunset after his horrendous playoff performance against Cleveland.

  6. Please let it be his last season. He’s gonna look like John Unitas, at the end w/ the Chargers, if he stays around. That was brutal to watch.

  7. At least one person SHOULD know:

    Kevin Colbert.

But he doesn’t. Because he’s awful at his job. In fact, only GM worse than Colbert is that dunce Ryan Pace in Chicago.

  8. Go to Profootballreference.com. Look up his stats the last five years (minus 2019 injury). Passed for over 5000 yards in 2018 (led league, also in completions) and his 34 (2018) and 33 (2020) TDs were his two career best. He is going to be fine. He can still air it (see Indianapolis game late in 2020). With the OC gone, along with his dink and dunk philosophy, he can stretch the field again. The D pressed the field on him and the WRs led in drops. They now have a decent RB and a TE who can now work underneath (Heath Miller) because Ben is allowed to stretch it out to Johnson and Claypool (JuJu safety value along with the new TE and soft-hands RB).

  9. 33 tds to 10 ints in 2020 at age 38 , 17tds to 15 ints in 2008 at age 27 and the media and fans think hes done?

  10. Patriot fans saying Roethlisberger is done? Hilarious. Their QB is Cam Newton.

  11. Ben was in the running for League MVP the first 11 games
of last season. He is not expected to carry the offense
on his shoulder alone. Colbert reloaded the offense
to give Ben more weapons, especially in the run game.
Haters gotta hate, but the Steelers will be fine,
    as they usually are.

  12. He’s had a HOF career to be proud of, but just looking at him week to week, this should be it for him.

  13. One will be a stretch. 2 with the conditioning regime Big Ben has? No.

  14. This Patriots fan says that Ben never gets his due. How many current QB’S have his resume? He’s footballs version of Phil Mickelson. He had Tiger, Ben had Brady (in the AFC.)

  15. The guy looks as out of shape as a pro athlete can possibly look.

Appearances are important to trolls but he has the 8th beat all time passer rating and fourth best average yards per catch. Ya but he doesn’t look the part to a troll…..That’s funny.

  16. The problem is that due to them drafting a QB relatively high a few years ago and Ben getting really upset, they have made no plans for any sort of succession plan once Ben is done, whether it is this season or next. Ben has very little gas left in the tank and they have no plan B.
