The 2021 regular season officially begins where the 2020 season ended.

The next NFL campaign opens with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers raising a banner and hosting the Dallas Cowboys.

NBC announced on Wednesday morning that Cowboys-Bucs launches the first 17-game slate in league history on Thursday, September 9. It will be Game No. 1 of 272.

The Buccaneers won their second Super Bowl title in February on the same field. They were the first team to play in a Super Bowl staged in their home stadium.

New Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who fell to Brady as the Seattle defensive coordinator in Super Bowl XLIX and the Falcons head coach in Super Bowl LI, will get a baptism by cannon fire against a Tampa Bay offense that returns all significant weapons. Ditto for the defense, as the Bucs become the first team since the 1970s to return all 22 starters.

For the Cowboys, the game will mark the return of quarterback Dak Prescott, who suffered a broken ankle in Week Five of the 2020 season. The Dallas offense is potent, and it could be a high-scoring and entertaining game.

The other options to start the season in Tampa were the Bills, Dolphins, Giants, Falcons, Saints, Panthers, and Bears. Each of those teams will play in Tampa at some point between Week Two and Week 18.

The full schedule officially will be released tonight. Leaks throughout the day are inevitable.

  1. Imagine that..Brady and TB get a lame duck to start off the season. Hasn’t it always been playoff teams playing the winning SB team on opening day?
    This game is a dud!!!

  2. This must be the first time in NFL history that a 6-10 team has been chosen to be in the spotlight opening game. Apparently the Cowboys are still getting mileage off their 1990s Super Bowl teams. Most of the Cowboys current roster wasn’t even born the last time the Cowboys were a great team.

  3. Gotta love teams like the Giants and Cowboys, seemingly perennial mediocre teams, but always in the spotlight. To the NFL schedule makers, GREED IS GOOD.

  4. The Giants usually do the same thing to start the season, year after year after year after year…this is refreshing.

    2019 – @ Dallas
    2018 – vs. Jags – @ Dallas week 2.
    2017 – @ Dallas
    2016 – @ Dallas
    2015 – @ Dallas
    2014 – @ Detroit
    2013 – @ Dallas

  5. Super Bowl Champs vs. Team That Hasn’t Done Squat In 26 Years! Makes sense.

  6. The third-place NFC East team at the World Champions? This isn’t about a compelling football game. This is about praying for ratings.

  7. Cowboys? the 4-11 never win a playoff game cowboys. Hello NFL it’s not 1992.

  8. First loss of the season for the Cowboys comes Week One, outstanding!

  9. The countdown begins: 120 days or, if you prefer, 2880 hours or 172,000 minutes or 10,368,000 seconds. Can’t wait.

  10. The start of a Dallas Cowboys well rounded 8-8 season now that Prescott will be back.

  11. Nice. that’s a great way to start the season

    =====================================

For the Buc’s it is…guaranteed Win.

  12. LOL the only upside is that most of the Cowboys front-runner fan base is older. A decade from now, we can see the 7-10 Patriots in primetime constantly when they have the biggest front-runner fan base.

  13. What’s the NFL thinking? The loser Cowboys haven’t been “America’s” team since Jerry Johnson. I’ll watch the game because I enjoy beatdowns of Dallas, but I wish the league had made a better choice for the season opener.

  14. Every year the NFL and networks try to persuade us that the Cowboys will be great. How about we wait until that actually happens to award them a showcase game? The Bills would have been a way better choice for the opening game of the season. That is, if you’re looking for an actual competition.

  15. Absolutely no reason the Cowboys should be in the opening night slot, but here we are.

Are the Cowboys America’s Team? It depends on what your definition of the phrase is. If by America’s Team you mean a team who gets the max amount of primetime slots each season regardless of how good the team actually is, it’s them. They will also manage to be on your usual cable package nationally televised about 11 out of the 16 games a year minimum. Some years that number has gone as high as 13 of 16 which is absurd, even if you live away from Texas (I’m in NJ). If by America’s Team you mean a team that is talked about more on your hot take trash sports TV shows, it’s them too. Same goes for jersey sales (I think at least roughly), the obvious large fan base, and even larger group of people who despise the team, fans, and owner. Hard to find even a casual fan of the sport who doesn’t have a strong opinion of them.

But if your definition of America’s Team is a team that actually wins and wins big, it hasn’t been them now for 26 years and counting. I’m a diehard fan of the team, and would like nothing more than for them to fall back to where they should be in terms of the nonsense, meaning that in a perfect world, they get stripped of being on national TV for what feels like every week and talked about constantly. I hate being a fan of this team because it’s never just about the games. It’s all of the other annoying factors thrown into the mix. I feel like teams play up to them too because it’s just extra motivation to embarrass AmErIcA’s TeAM. But again, a lot of this has been brought on themselves with the media’s help. Oh well. End rant. And thanks for birthing me into this mess, Dad LOL.

  16. A whole lot of people in this thread are gonna be sad when the Cowboys walk away 1-0 from that game. Dak is back, Defense couldnt possibly be worse than they were last season with Mike Nolan. Dan Quinn is in charge now and he got loaded up with talent in the draft. Diggs is in year 2. Linebackers in Dallas if healthy, could be dominant.

  17. The NFL schedules a matchup with a competitor who was last great 30 years ago. I predict the pre-game concert will feature a band from the 80s like Asia or the Rolling Stones.

With TB’s defense, Dak will be lucky if he ends the game without being on IR

  19. I’m certain the Bills would have been FAR more of a challenge and a more intriguing game for sports fans but, it is what it is!

  20. If I’m the station manager of WNBC-TV (Channel 4) in New York, I’m furious it’s not Giants-Bucs as the game as noted will be airing directly opposite the women’s semifinals of the US Open Tennis Championships on ESPN. If one or both Williams sisters happen to get to the semis, it would likely have a huge negative impact on the rating for that game in NYC as the US Open historically does big ratings in New York (in particular because of those who don’t watch Tennis the rest of the year who will watch the US Open solely because it’s in New York, a very unique-to-NYC thing) and many will watch just because its the Williams sisters if they get that far.

  21. Eagles fan here who doesn’t like the Cowboys.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think the Cowboys will be better than people expect with an overhaul on defense/defensive coaching; Dak/the o-line back healthy; and the continued diminished role of Jerry Jones on shaping the roster. Before Prescott and multiple players on their offensive line last year suffered injuries, their offense was impressive.

That said, with a new scheme and so many new defensive players, the D might not actually gel into what it will be until midseason, and Tampa should roll.

  22. Browns / Chiefs would’ve been so much better. Heck, Seahawks / Colts too.

  23. Buccaneers: 4 playoff wins since January 1, 2021.

Cowboys: 3 playoff wins since February 1, 1997.

  24. Everybody is picking Dallas to do well(Just like they do every year) Dak is back and the defense has been supposedly upgraded. The real problem for Dallas is that aging oline! and they will be tested by a very unsanitary Tampa Defense.Dak will be lucky if he is not on IR by week 5!

  25. The Buccaneers winning the super bowl was actually great for the NFL. They might not have a large fanbase, but it’s refreshing to see a historically godawful franchise look great again. The Browns doing good is interesting for the league, too.

Did you want them to trot out that sorry KC team that couldn’t even score a TD over 60 minutes? 🤣

  27. Cowboys last year zero starters on the online and no Dak. Dcord. Was the worst in football never putting the players in positions to succeed. We reloaded with speed and talent in this draft, Brady old and slow Meet Parsons the freak of a LB who going to end your season if not career come game one. Sure we may lose but once this team gels by mid season we will be feared!

  28. Giants – Bucs was actually a good game last season, but as a Giants fan I don’t want to play the Bucs at all, certainly not in the opener.

  29. Dallas has never ever beaten Tom Brady! This is the No.1 factor in deciding who will win!!!
