Tom Brady may break career passing yardage record in New England

Tom Brady‘s return to New England may see him break a major NFL record.

Brady is currently 1,154 passing yards behind Drew Brees for the NFL’s all-time career record. That means if Brady were to average 289.6 yards per game in 2021 — his average in 2020 — he would break the all-time record in Week Four, when the Buccaneers play at New England on Sunday Night Football.

It’s unknown whether the NFL considered that as a factor when deciding to put the much-anticipated Bucs-Patriots game in Week Four. The league does sometimes factor in the potential for players to break records when it schedules certain games at certain times, but Brady’s return to New England is a huge game regardless of whether the record is on the line.

Brady currently has 79,204 career passing yards. Brees retired with 80,358 career passing yards. Among active players, Ben Roethlisberger is second to Brady with 60,348 passing yards, so once Brady breaks Brees’ record, Brady will own the record for years to come.

  1. So let’s see, how can we make this game more competitive. Oh I know! Let’s have Tampa fly out to LA for a potential NFC championship preview (and a far bigger game) and then have them fly to NE the following week, all the while New England gets to hang out at home for a few weeks

The Pats are the only team to face 3 teams coming off their bye, and they have a Week 14 Bye. Yeah, the league is really trying to do them some favors.

  3. It is not “unknown” that the NFL considered this possibility as a factor. They did.

There’s a good chance it will happen, which will be great for all TB, Patriot, and Tampa Bay fans. No one will break it for a long time. Mahomes would have to have 16-17 more years at his current pace and that is obviously a low probability.

  4. Always kind of figured he would break that record in New England….but I didn’t figure on him playing for another team while doing it, though.

  5. The media will be looking for something to put a negative spin on, so if Brady were to break that record hopefully it will happen before the game in NE. With all that aside, the game could then be looked as a homecoming of sorts for Brady. After all, he did win 6 championships with the team.

  6. With Cam as starter the game is over before it even begins…. Him not being able to read defenses or throw the ball will ultimately wear out the Patriots D & Brady will pick them apart …..

  7. Would have been a much more fun game if it were to snow. Nothing more exhilerating than pirates and militiamen going toe to toe in wintry conditions.

  8. I beg to differ, Brady has 12,449 passing yards in the playoffs. Brees has 5366 which puts Brady at 91k yards and Brees at 85k. For comparison Manning’s total 79k.

It’s silly that the HOF and ESPN don’t factor playoff totals. This will be great radio and TV coverage for a week.

For the Rodgers readers his total is 56k. Going to need 30k to catch Brees which is basically 5 straight historic seasons with Super Bowl appearances…

  9. Remember no one on earth knows more about Brady’s strengths weaknesses and tendencies than BB. That should help a New England team that is a bit under manned. On paper Tampa wins but in real life it will be a better game than that. I am looking forward to this one.,

  10. I sure hope the attendance restrictions are lifted by the time this game is played. I think it will be an uproarious evening in Foxboro and I’m really wondering what kind of reception Brady is going to get. How will Pats fans treat the guy that gave them 19 years of excellence? Will it be Cam or Mac vs TB12? I think the Patriots are one of the most improved teams from 2020 but that Bucs defense is going to make to a rough night for whomever plays QB for the Pats.

You forgot to mention that Tampa Bay has two home games before going on the road for those two away games… and after NE, yup, another home game for the Bucs.

  12. Appropriate that the Patriots’ fans will get to see that accomplishment most likely happen in New England.

  13. “.. so once Brady breaks Brees’ record, Brady will own the record for years to come.”

    Until Danny Jones gets it!

I know of Brees and Brady, but who is this Rodgers guy you speak of?

  15. They didn’t consider this, but as soon as someone pointed it out to them they’ll take credit for it…

  16. Brady will flop in that game. Former assistants turned head coaches have mostly had success facing Brady. I’m sure Belichick will expose him.

  17. Could be one of the best episodes of the season. I bet the writers are already hard at work on the script……..

  18. Brady and Belichick will both want to win this game. Very badly.

Wonder whether Hightower & McCourty & Gilmore will also want to hand TB12 a defeat as badly as Belichick?

    I’ll be rooting for Tom.

  19. Like Gretzky setting the all time goals scored record at Edmonton, it would be well deserved for NE fans to witness this.

It’s for certain that Stidham is not the answer. It’s an open question as to whether Mac Jones will have enough time to learn the system by then.

BB knows a lot about football and coaching. If he sees something in Cam and believe he gives the team the best chance for success then let’s see what Cam looks like after having time to learn the playbook and fully recover from Covid.

  21. Barring injury, Brady will break Brees’ record this season. That’s a given. But when you add playoff yardage, Brady already holds the record, 91,653 yards. Quick math: He needs 8,347 yards, regular season and playoffs, to reach the unimaginable total of 100,000 yards. With the extra game and the likelihood of the Buccaneers making the playoffs this year and next, Brady should reach that milestone near the end of the 2022 season. Wow.

  22. That’s nothing. Lamar is breaking the all-time rushing record while playing out of position!

  23. Brady is about to face what Manning faced for 18 years, Belichick’s defense. Even though rules have changed to favor the offense over the years, Belichick can still dial up some defense. It will not be a cakewalk for Brady.

  24. Other records Brady will break early this season:

With his first win this season, Brady will become the oldest quarterback ever to start and win a game in the NFL.

Assuming Brady plays in the Rams game a week earlier, Brady will pass Vinnie Testaverde to become the 10th oldest person ever to play at any position in the NFL or its predecessors. Of the remaining nine ahead of him, 5 were pure kickers, 1 came out of retirement to start (and lose) one game at 45, 2 played in the first half of the 1920’s (one started playing at 40 and retired at 45), and one (Blanda) was almost exclusively a kicker who never started or finished a game as quarterback after he turned 44 and who completed a grand total of seven (7) passes over five seasons after he turned 44.

  25. Anyone that thinks the Pats will be rolled up on are in for a rude awakening. This is a 10/11 win team. They won’t win the SBowl, but they’ll contend for a playoff spot. And don’t forget, the ex coach always has the advantage.

  26. What no one talks about is how Brady is on the edge of a total of 100,000 total passing yards as he has nearly 3 extra seasons of games played in playoff games…100,00 total passing yards….insane. He needs 8400 yards to hit this mark that will never be touched.

One could argue the NFL gave Tampa a BIG advantage by not scheduling this game in December when it will be cold and potentially snowy.

So he chose to not “dial it up” in the SB against the Eagles? I would tend to agree. He put his ego ahead of the team.

Pats will remain very quiet. Just how they like it.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Their fans should take a lesson and do the same. But they won’t

  30. Yeah and Belichick is donning the pads on defense that night. lol. Gimme a break, this game is already HIGHLY over hyped. Revenge game for who/what?????? lol again.

  31. IF there is anyone that knows how to beat Brady, it is Belichick.

I expect the Bucs to win, but it will be a close game.

  32. The Bucs sure got an easy schedule. It’s the 4th easiest in the NFL. TO top that off, they only play one cold weather game and it’s vs the Jets.

You should get that fixed. Been happening a lot lately.

  34. It’s going to be a great week of press building up to that game. Bill will be in rare bitter form.

  35. Id rather see him set the record for ints and sacks taken. He and the bucs are the enemy when they come to the razor.

  36. As a Rams fan I like the idea they play Tampa the week before Brady has to play his former team. Maybe Tommy will be looking ahead to old team and Rams beat them for the second year in a row. We’ll take any edge we can get.

  37. The schedule was specifically made to allow Brady to set the record while in Gillette Stadium. Many of the games on the schedule were set to give the fans the most exciting games, which means more people will watch and the NFL will make more money.

    It makes good business sense.

  38. BB is upto the task… especially with Big Mac under center. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start 4-0.

  39. Pick up Brady as your fantasy QB. He is guaranteed to throw for 300 yards in each of the first three games so that he can set that record in Foxboro.

  40. So much for plugging in any QB to the ‘system’ – Brady WAS the system. As a head coach, Bill was sub – .500 pre-Brady and is now sub-.500 post Brady…speaks for itself with Brady at 43 in his FIRST season with a NEW team and easily winning the super bowl! BB should give his pathetic boat with the ring count on the back to the guy who actually EARNED those rings in SPITE of working with a LOSING head coach….uh, that would be BRADY. Case closed.

  41. Pats have a rest/game-plan differential of minus 15, the worst in the NFL. It’s an advantage the league can control, unlike the teams on your schedule.

The Pats play 11 of 17 games against teams Vegas expects to have winning records. That’s a tough schedule.

No one’s doing the Patriots any favors this year.
