Urban Meyer on Tim Tebow: A decision is coming soon

USA TODAY Sports

Jaguars coach Urban Meyer continues to talk about signing tight end Tim Tebow. Without actually signing Tim Tebow.

On Saturday, Meyer once again suggested that the official acquisition of Tebow could be coming soon.

“I’ve leaned on my staff for that,” Meyer told reporters on Saturday during the team’s rookie minicamp. “And I imagine a decision is gonna be soon. . . We’ll have a chat Sunday.”

Meyer has suggested that Tebow will indeed be signed. But the signing hasn’t happened.

So what’s the delay? Is it an extended trial balloon? Or are the Jaguars simply waiting to trade or release quarterback Gardner Minshew, so that the Jaguars instantly can capitalize on selling as many “Tebow 15” jerseys as possible?

Whatever the reason for the delay — and whatever the basis for the decision not to simply have Tebow participate in rookie minicamp on a tryout basis — a decision is coming soon. There’s currently no reason to think the decision will be anything other than to add Tebow to the 90-man roster.

  1. IF they sign him , who ever the young player is that is losing his spot to him is gonna hate him for his lifetime.
Give the spot to a young “possiblty player” instead of an OLD WASHED UP WANNA BE PLAYER.

    there’s always golf Tebone

  2. I hope they sign Tebrow just to annoy the crybabies… and I’m not even a Tebow fan.

  3. If he should unfortunately happen to tear his ACL before he’s signed, Trent Baalke will insist they bring him on. Trent sees torn ACL’s as “value “.

Whoever the young player is? Please look at the Jags depth at TE. They have a guy that was garbage last season. A guy who was a practice squad player who has been waived numerous times. Then there is the one they drafted this year who grades out to be a practice squad caliber player. Why not sign Tebow and let them all compete for the position. Sadly, Tebow would probably be an upgrade over what they have.

  5. Tebow as a tight end and an emergency quarterback with some wildcat experience is not that far fetched…

So you like seeing people be angry? That’s very telling

  7. Milk it for all it’s worth, Urb.
By the way, I understand the NFL is going to start a “Tim Tebow Network”. It will contain nothing but Tebow news 24/7.

  8. What could it possibly hurt to add him to the 90 man roster? It’s not like they’re starting him in the Super Bowl for crapes sake.

  9. Meanwhile Baltimore plans to pay Lamar 9 figures to be a ‘quarterback’ and no one bats an eye.

  10. Nobody is “losing a spot” to Tebow anymore than they would be losing the spot to any other player. If you can’t beat out a guy who has not been in the league for 8 years then it’s probably time to consider a new career!

  11. The jury is out on whether or not Meyer can be a legitimate NFL hot shot coach; but there’s no doubt that he is a big time publicity seeking prima donna diva.

  12. If Jags can’t do better at TE than a 33 y/o guy who never played the position before and has been out of football for years, then they are in a world of hurt.

  13. So Meyer brings Tebow on, then converts him to a coaching intern. Who better to teach the offense to the new players?

In today’s society, too many people are looking for any reason to be offended and angry. So, yes I laugh at them. You looking to placate everyone’s irrational anger… now that’s telling.

LOL ,have you ever seen the video of T-bones ONLY TIME lining up as a TE ?
He was with the Jets the ball was gonna hit him in the head ,so he ducked his head.
younger prospects would have atleast tried to catch it.
maybe i was wrong with golf, there’s also BOWLING.

  16. Why not? He’ll sell tickets and they’re not winning anything this year anyway.

Maybe someone with some practical coaching experience?

  18. Urban is going to put Tebow under center in goal line packages to run the option, throw jump passes and run the QB draw. You don’t expose the “franchise” to those situations coming off shoulder surgery.

  19. This is Steve Spurrier bringing in Danny Wuerffel to Washington all over again

You do know a lot of coaches start off as players, right? Certainly not all, but definitely some. Wes Welker is currently an assistant coach. Byron Leftwich is an offensive coordinator. Gary Kubiak rose through the ranks to become a head coach. Etc.

  21. Tebow is one of the most trash QBs I’ve ever seen taken in the first round. Seriously I’ve seen little leaguers with better throwing motion. And now they want to line him up as a TE in the National Football League?!? Based on what evidence do they think he could even have played it at the collegiate level? 12 years ago?

  22. Don’t worry folks if it Don’t work out the coach will fake an illness and retire again for the 3rd time

  23. Maybe they sign him or don’t. Either way, I’m still the starter.

    Regards,

GARDNEr M. Ska the real GM

  24. Secret weapon….Tebow in at hb running toss pass gadget plays. Tebow mania would erupt all over again.

  25. It’s crazy they did gardner minshew wrong.
I mocked him all last year but he has played really well.
The kid has potential. I mean forget potential. He can play. I don’t think he’s too sad about possibly leaving Jacksonville.

  26. If Meyer’s coaches are right, and Tebow is in great shape and can catch passes, then the Gardner Minshew may be the real behind the scenes story. Tebow and Meyer want Tebow to have the #15 jersey which Minshew has.

  27. Other than selling jerseys and tickets I don’t see the upside here. If he was fresh out of college, sure. Stash him on the practice squad and see if he develops. At 33 he’s at the tail end of his prime if not past it already athletically.

  28. Was he really that bad when he was in the NFL? Not a fan but he didn’t completely suck.

If he works out cool. If not cut him. It’s that easy.

  29. Good morning! Did Tebow get signed overnight? Asking for a friend.

  30. They’ll give him a shot for sure. IMO I think he is too old for the job but its nice he is getting a shot.

  31. Tebow is a good guy, decent athlete, likeable but pro sports has turned him into a tool.

  32. Urban should sign Tebow. He’s already turned this process into a circus. Thelockerroom will be a hot mess.

It’s becoming clear that the Urban era will end sooner than later, with the Jags going nowhere.

  33. What ever happened to the Head Coach that made Tebow a first round pick, has he been a Head Coach anywhere in the NFL since?

  34. I don’t know why people don’t see how brilliant a signing this is.

Tim Tebow on your roster can serve as a third string QB, emergency running back and add tight end depth. Instead of three people occupying those spots, you get it done with one.

Tebow has more postseason wins than Andy Dalton, Carson Wentz and a whole slew of other guys.

  36. “I don’t know why people don’t see how brilliant a signing this is.”

    Thanks for the laugh.

Tebow hasn’t played since 2012. That’s 9 looooong years. He never played as a tight end and wasn’t a very good quarterback when he did play. His career NFL completion percentage is under 50%, which explains why he was cut by Denver, NY Jets, New England, and Philly

There are many players that would be better than Tebow. Urban is using the Tebow name to generate excitement. Tebow was a fan favorite in that area when he was in college.

  37. “Tebow has more postseason wins than Andy Dalton, Carson Wentz and a whole slew of other guys.”

That’s ONE win. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

  38. Any time Tim Tebow has been given an opportunity to play football, he’s been a big winner. In Denver and at Florida. Every time Urban Meyer has gotten a coaching job, he’s been a big winner. I didn’t realize Urban Meyer put out a suggestion box. I’m sure he’s written books on how to succeed in football, but I’m not really convinced he’s asking a lot of us for advice. Oh well, I guess I comment on a lot of things I know nothing about, too. It’s just that when a guy’s been successful his entire life, I’m probably going to take a wait and see approach.

  39. Useless conversation. He did catch a little fire in Denver, it was a good season in that theses games were interesting, for a really bad team, but it interesting in that anyone has watched the team knew John wasn’t in.
That aside his work at Florida stands.

  40. So much wind about such a tiny matter. Just shows how profitable the NFL could be if they figured out how to play 10 months a year without killing all their players.

  41. This is absolutely genius guys…. think about it. What is the only think that can distract the reporters from preying on the new rookie QB? TEBOW!!! This isn’t about seeing if he can play TE, it’s about taking some media attention away from the guy who is actually going to see the field. See, all this Tebow talk made me forget his name already…. Trayvon? Travis? Hey look, Tebow is in tight. Let’s see how he does blocking….

  42. Any time Tim Tebow has been given an opportunity to play football, he’s been a big winner

    ——
Big winners don’t get cut from 4 different teams in 3 years and get escorted out of the league. Teams tend to keep “big winners”.
