No, Urban Meyer isn’t trying to get Tim Tebow vested in the NFL’s pension plan

USA TODAY Sports

There’s a strange theory making the rounds regarding one of the potential reasons for Jaguars coach Urban Meyer giving an offseason roster spot — and, eventually, a regular-season job — to tight end Tim Tebow. It’s not only strange, but also incorrect.

As the argument goes, Meyer is doing it because Tebow is a handful of games away from becoming vested in the league’s pension plan.

Here’s why it’s wrong: He’s already vested. Vesting happens with three credited seasons. Tebow has three credited seasons, from 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Another credited season would give Tebow greater benefits. But so what? The guy currently has and will have whatever money he needs.

Thus, while there are one or two (or more) non-football reasons for the move, helping Tebow vest his NFL pension isn’t one of them.

  1. In today’s world, there is absolutely no such thing as having all the money you need.

  2. “The guy currently has and will have whatever money he needs.”

Talking about Tebow specifically this may well be true but there are guys who squandered WAY more money than Tebow earned over his career. There’s been numerous guys already basically bankrupt while still playing who were Tebow’s age or even younger. It must be a truly strange feeling to be in your 30s and have eared tens of millions and have ALL of it already completely gone. But plenty of guys know that feeling.

  3. Honestly, I can’t understand all the hand wringing over Tebow. It’s not like the team is even paying him like a starter. If RGIII can still draw a paycheck, why not Tebow? Also, if he flames out in camp, he’ll be cut. Training camp is exactly the place for a guy like him. Yes, we all know this is mostly a PR move for a regional fan favorite, but it comes with no real strings attached 😉

Yeah those are guys that have no other way to make money other than football. Tebow can show up anywhere and make tons in appearance fees. For the rest of his life.

  5. Lay off! Give the man a break! Who among us has the courage and will to try once more?
