Tim Tebow gets minimum salary, no guarantees

When only one team wants you, you can’t drive a hard bargain. And that’s reflected in Jaguars tight end Tim Tebow’s contract.

Tebow signed a one-year deal for $920,000, which is the league minimum salary for a player with his level of experience. He gets nothing guaranteed. He also has an injury split, meaning the Jaguars aren’t on the hook for his entire salary if he suffers a season-ending injury.

There would be no reason for the Jaguars to give Tebow more than the league minimum (some would say there’s no reason for the Jaguars to sign Tebow at all), so nothing is surprising here.

Tebow only makes the salary if he makes the roster, which is unlikely. But even if he never plays for the Jaguars, Tebow gets a cut of the jerseys with his name on them, which are already selling well.

  1. I would return punts and wash the team uniforms to make that kind of money in one year.

  2. Trevor Lawrence can worry about making the jump while the media worries about Tebow. That’s a pretty saavy move for that alone. Tebow is taking a roster spot of someone who would be getting on with their life’s work soon anyway.

  3. Why is this a shock to anyone? Unlike other athletes, Tebow has never proclaimed he is owed opportunities, nor has he demanded unreasonable compensation.

If he proves himself worthy of the opportunity – the Jags will get great value for their investment. If he isn’t up to the task, i will bet you that he retires before he is cut.

Interested to see how this plays out.

Tim Tebow is getting media attention because he’s a popular and polarizing individual and there’s nothing much going on right now aside from publicity stunts like this one.
Trevor Lawrence was not only the No. 1 pick in the draft, he’s considered by many to be a generational talent. The second things officially get going Mr. Lawrence will become the center of the NFL media universe, with zero chance whatsoever of flying beneath anyone’s radar.
The second that happens the media’s focus on an aging tight end candidate with low odds of making the team will be limited to asking one question: Tim Teb-Who?

  5. If Kaep accepted a similar contract he would also have a job. See how that works?

  6. I feel like it is a longshot to make the club, let alone be productive at the position given age and position change. But I wish him well. Would be a cool story if he actually makes the team and plays.

  7. Huh. It’s almost as though they’re risking nothing to bring in a locally-popular guy to see if he has anything of value to contribute. But that can’t be right. I’ve read on the internet that they’re doing irrecoverable damage to their franchise by signing someone so unworthy of NFL-player status.

  8. Go look at the receiving and TD stats for the 15th through 30th ranked TE’s from last year….and tell me with a straight face that Tebow can’t deliver 300 yards passing an 1 or 2 TD’s per season. That’s just the 15th to 30th ranked TE’s, there’s like 75 more in the league

  9. If – if the jags get $92 out of every $119 jersey sold the have to sell 10,000 Tebow jerseys to cover his salary. re there that many people willing to part with $119 for a Tebow jersey??? I would love to know the sales figures at the end of the year, or when he is released (not that I want him to be released). I am curious how the business end of this works out. Will TT help fill stadiums?

For that amount of money you would need to do a lot more and actually be good at it.
