Ryan Fitzpatrick can become first starting QB to lose to 31 different teams

Three starting quarterbacks in NFL history have wins over all 32 NFL teams: Drew Brees, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. Tom Brady will join that list if his Buccaneers beat the Patriots this season. And Aaron Rodgers could join the list too if he ends up on another team, and that team beats the Packers. But no quarterback has accomplished the feat of losing to all 32 teams.

Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick can come the closest this season.

Fitzpatrick has lost to 28 different teams as a starting quarterback, according to Pro Football Reference. Of the four teams he hasn’t lost to, three are on Washington’s schedule this season: The Packers, Saints and Buccaneers. If Fitzpatrick loses to those three teams, he’ll have lost to an all-time record 31 NFL teams. (The Lions are the one team Fitzpatrick hasn’t lost to and won’t play this season.)

Although no starting quarterback has lost to 31 or 32 different teams, seven have lost to 30: Drew Bledsoe, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Matt Hasselbeck, Jon Kitna, Carson Palmer and Alex Smith. One quarterback, Kerry Collins, has lost to 29 teams. But all of those quarterbacks are retired, so they can’t reach 31 losses like Fitzpatrick.

In addition to Fitzpatrick, the other quarterbacks who have lost to 28 different teams in their careers are Derek Carr, Jay Cutler, Joe Flacco, Jeff George, Eli Manning, Warren Moon, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan and Vinny Testaverde. Carr, Flacco, Roethlisberger and Ryan can still add to their totals, but none can reach 31 different teams this season like Fitzpatrick can: Ryan’s Falcons only play two of the four teams he hasn’t lost to, while Carr’s Raiders and Roethlisberger’s Steelers play one each. Flacco’s Eagles play two of the teams he hasn’t lost to, but he’s not expected to start this season, so Flacco is unlikely to add to his total.

Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford have each lost to 27 different teams, but none of them can add more than three new losses this season, so none can catch Fitzpatrick.

In a strange way, losing to all 32 teams is a more difficult accomplishment than beating all 32 teams: Quarterbacks who lose a lot of games usually get benched or cut and don’t last long enough to lose to all 32 teams. It’s hard to keep a starting job for a long time while losing a lot of games. But Fitzpatrick has been a starter for eight different franchises, and Washington will be his ninth. He’s had an unusual career, and this year he can do something unprecedented in NFL history.

  1. We all wish we could bet on this happening.

Assuming Rodgers stays put, only the Saints game looks win-able.

  2. How any one can call Washington an improved team with this guy as their starting QB is beyond logic. He’s a proven loser. Until the Washington Team finds a legit QB, they cannot be considered an improved team.

  3. I’m sure the Fitzpatrick household will be excited to wake up to this post this morning. #Fitztragic!

  4. Fitz continues his very unique career. It would have been interesting to see how his career would have played out if he landed on one good team, with a good running game and coach early on. Ryan T of Tennessee comes to mind. Could have Fitz had real success as oppose to the occasional Fitzmagic games?

  5. What about Andy Dalton? Second year in the NFC should help him cross some more teams off the list.

  6. Rather see a list of qbs who lost to JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Ryan Mallett, Dwayne Haskins

  7. All that says is he has been in the league for a very long time and congrats on such a career.

  8. Smarts and a Harvard degree have helped the Bearded one play the game he loves with style.

  9. He’ll never get to 32………………..the Lions lose to everybody, he’ll always beat them.

  10. Anyone else notice two of the QBs who have lost to 30 teams were Seattle QBs?

  11. Detroit Lions are always associated to some weird stat — the weirdest– the Lions are the only team to a lose a game leading the entire 60 minute game –the one where a hand to the head of Aaron Rodgers with 0.0 left in the 4th gave Green Bay one shot –50 yard hail mary caught — Lions lose —

  12. At 38 years old Ryan Fitzpatrick is a QB with limited talent who has so how found a way to last nearly 20 years in the NFL. Far longer than the majority of first round QBs. Not only that but the majority of the time he’s been viewed as a viable starter for the teams he played for. Never the QB of the future for a franchise but always someone QB needy teams turn to to help transition to their QB of the future. And this may be my opinion only but wildly entertaining. He might throw for 350 yards and 4 tds or he may toss 4 ints in a half….heck sometimes he does both in the same game. In basketball there’s a player called the 6th man. A player not quit good enough to be an every day starter but good enough to run with the starters and give the team a spark in short doses. Ryan would be one of the best 6th men in the NFL is such a thing existed.

  13. I used to laugh at stats like this but the fact that he is here speaks to just one thing: he is still here. A whole lot of QBs are not.

I do not believe that in balance “QBs win games”. As much as we try it is not a pitchers’ duel like in BB (still one of the few classic clashes in sports) and the other 52 players on the active roster might argue they had something to do with the record. A QB on a bad team, and he was on many, is going to have a bad record. So I don’t think this is some badge of dishonor either.

Good on you Fitz. For still being here.

  14. I don’t know what is worse. Fitzpatrick losing to 31 different teams or the Lions never beating Fitzpatrick.

  15. You have to be pretty good to stick around long enough to lose to all those teams.

  16. First of all, you have to be a pretty good QB to be around long enough to lose to that many teams. And of course Fitzpatrick didn’t ‘lose’ all of those games himself. He was part of a team, and played on a lot of bad-mediocre ones over the years.

  17. There’s a lot of used car salesmen with college football helmets sitting on their desks who wish they had been good enough to play long enough to lose to 30 different teams.

  18. I like Fitzmagic, he has been on some bad teams, he has played poorly on other teams, he has been benched while playing well. He seems to always keep bouncing back and may be playing his best football of his career. Last year he may have had the play of the year against the Raiders when he came in as a “Closer” QB and completed a long pass to win the game while almost getting his helmet ripped off. The guy is a gamer and the league is better for having guys like him in it. I wish him all the success in Washington however will be rooting for him to add to his total against the Pack.

  19. I was surprised how well Fitz played for the Dolphins. People love to throw the “Fitztragic” word around, but honestly it didn’t happen a lot in Miami and he was always the most popular guy in the locker room. He can still play. He will definitely make his Washington teammates enjoy coming to work. His love for the game is infectious.

  20. Without a shred of irony in saying this…. Ryan Fitzpatrick should go to the NFL hall of fame as the most interesting career in history. Dead serious in saying this.

  21. Not many guys last 9 years in the NFL let alone start games for 9 different teams. That’s an impressive career.

  22. Say what you want, but he’s had a heck of a career. I remember going to the store with my son in 2005 (spring/maybe summer) and getting a bunch of football cards for him. After he opined them and I looked through them I remember laughing a little and a card being made for a qb from
    Harvard.
Little did I know he’d be the best qb for my team since Doug flutie.

This guys had a career many, many qbs wish they had. Hats off to an improbable and yes, dare I say, successful career.

I’ve hated the phins for 30 plus years but I couldn’t agree more with your comment. If all the top talent qbs had his attitude, every team basically would have a really good qb. The league is better off for guys like this

So wrong regrding Fitz, but right on Washington and improved team

  25. What do all the quarterbacks, that lost to most of the NFL teams, have in common?

They have all been in the league longer than most other quarterbacks.

  26. Fitzpatrick wants to play on a team that has a legit team name. Get rid of WFT, the worst and dumbest name in the history of sports. Get it together, Washington!!! I will solve it for you. Go with Washington Sentinels. Allow fans to feel good about their team’s name again.

  27. This guy has quietly putting together an immensely lucrative and lengthy career.

Not bad for being pick #250 in the 2005 draft. How many number 1 picks or even round 1 picks from that draft or the 10 years that followed are still in the league?

He’s laughing at all of us laughing at him. And cashing big checks.
