The NFL on Thursday suspended free agent offensive tackle Jared Veldheer for six games to open the 2021 season. Veldheer, though, released a statement to NFL Media announcing his retirement.

He also addressed his positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, saying prescribed medication triggered it.

I was prescribed low dose clomid due to abnormally low T (likely caused from pituitary damage suffered from repeated blows to the head),” Veldheer wrote, including the parenthesis. “I recommend this to any veteran who is struggling from post-football issues. I also plan to retire, at this time, from the NFL.”

Veldheer, who turns 34 next month, has played only three regular-season games the past two seasons. He appeared in 121 games, starting 114, in 11 seasons after the Raiders made him a third-round choice.

  1. He gave the Palmer and Campbell some really good protection early on for the Raiders. Injury bug started catching up to him shortly after he left OAK. I remember when that picture of him leaked after his rookie year where he put on like 30lbs of muscle and looked like the hulk, was wild.

  2. Sucks man. It takes guts to put your medical issues out in the open. I hope this marks the start of him feeling better, and not the opposite.

Not really. He played some of his best football after he left Oakland and didn’t miss a single game for a few years after he left Oakland. The only serious injury he suffered in AZ was a torn triceps in 2016, Veldheer started every game in 2014 and 2015. Oakland massively bungled his contract letting one of the best LT’s in the NFL at the time go for nothing in return and then tried to replace him w/ an OG in Rodger Saffold. And the deal he signed for in AZ was very reasonable , it wasn’t a market setting deal. Veldheer signed for 5YRs/$35M dollars $17M guaranteed in 2014, and he actually wanted to stay in OAK but like everything Oakland at the time touched they messed up contract negotiations w/ Veldheer. Oakland had a terrible GM at the time, I cannot remember his name it was Reggie something I believe but that guy was horrible.
