The Patriots shuffled their roster on Thursday by adding one player and saying farewell to another.

Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reports that the team has signed tight end Troy Fumagalli to the roster. Fullback Dan Vitale was dropped in a corresponding move.

Fumagalli was a 2018 fifth-round pick in Denver who spent his rookie season on injured reserve. He played 19 games for Denver over the last two seasons and had 14 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

He joins Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Dalton Keene, Devin Asiasi, and Matt LaCosse at tight end in New England.

Vitale signed with the Patriots last year, but did not play after opting out of the season. He is one of five Patriots players who opted out in 2020 and are no longer on the roster.

  1. Typical “finding gold among rocks”.

Like throwing a bag of rocks to his QB and let his QB work his ass off to figure out who will be good fit. If “gold” is found, Belichick’s believers will give all the credits to Belichick.

  2. Always thinking ahead and outside the box, will NE come out with 4 tight end sets in 2021? Get some big bodies on those smaller DBs downfield to muscle them out of the way? That’ll be like 260 lb wide receivers! LOL – That might freak a few coaches out.

  3. I remember the patriot clowns drooling over the signing of Vitale on this site claiming it was a brilliant move. Hahahahahaha

  4. Every team has 4 TEs. It’s not a new idea.
Opt outs for. “Talented privilege “players only. All bounced but the All Pro.

  5. You can’t be signed to a new team that is needing guys to step up and fill the huge void created in their offense by losing their long time QB, and in your first year, opt out of all 16 games+, because you are afraid. You haven’t made any deposits in the trust bank, yet you want to apply for a loan. Get outta heeya!

  6. In addition to the void from losing Brady, they of course had lost their very effective fullback James Devlin, and Vitale left them hanging with a Euro League project player to lean on. So yeah, no surprise Vitale is gone. Expected.

  7. Most of the opt outs last year probably knew they weren’t going to make the team anyway.

Most of the opt outs were veterans with a good history on the team either starting or contributing. It absolutely hurt them. But, a lot of them were older and after a year out of the game…well in the end its a business.
