Patriots become the betting favorites to land Julio Jones

The markets are moving.

After just a few days, the Patriots have rocketed to the top of the odds for the next Julio Jones destination. The PointsBet sports book has moved the Patriots from +700 to +150, making them the current favorites to land the Falcons receiver.

The Titans likewise have surged, from +1000 to +200.

The 49ers have fallen from the +450 favorite to +500. The Rams, which have neither the cap space nor the draft picks to easily pull it off, have landed at +500 as well.

The Colts, recently +475, are down to +800. Ditto for the Chargers, who also have slid to +800 from +475.

Baltimore and Jacksonville come in at +900.

The window opens, as a practical matter, for a Julio Jones trade on Wednesday, June 2. The biggest questions are the trade compensation the Falcons will receive, and whether and to what extent Atlanta will have to pay any of Jones’ $15.3 million base salary for 2021 in order to get a deal done.

  1. Send N’Keal Harry and Sony Michel down there alone with a 6th round pick for him. No one is giving a 1st for him at his age and salary. They’re not getting a 2nd or 3rd. Especially if ATL won’t pay any of his salary.

  2. It would not be a bad move for the Pats, depending on what they give up for him. These WRs they just signed are 45-50 catch type guys. Those adds aren’t the bonanza they’re made out to be. While the TE signings are a huge upgrade (over nothing), adding Julio would likely be a real improvement at WR, despite his age and potential downtime.

  3. I hope he goes to the Bucs. Will be funny watching an epic Tampa Bay Tommy choke with a superteam. 😀

He won’t help the Patriots any more than a better QB will. Mac is the guy, Cam isn’t.

  4. Stidham will throw for 25 TDs to him alone! Let the stidham decade of dominance begin now!

  5. If this happens it would be seriously interesting if Cam starts. First time he’d have a top wide receiver since college.

  6. After an aberrational year — any sensible person would disregard it entirely — the Patriot dynasty rolls on.

  7. The higher the pick offered, the more of that salary Atlanta pays.

Trading future potential for cash now.

  8. The Pats??? How are they the favorites? Didn’t Julio say he wants to play for a winner?

  9. If the Pats do the trade, I think that they made a foolish deal. The team is not going to the Super bowl. Julio is a 2 year player.

  10. If the Falcons want to do Julio right, they’ll try to work out a deal with the 49ers.

  11. But Julio said he wanted to go to a contender… If you don’t know what you have at quarterback, then you’re not a contender

    ————-
Your scenario makes no sense when you break it down. Right now its doubtful they can get a 1st round pick for Julio but you somehow see them getting a 1st AND a low cost and cost controlled defensive player? Since it has to be a low salaried player otherwise it makes no sense for Atlanta to pay any of his salary if their getting someone back with a bloated contract. So the only realistic scenario using your parameters is Atlanta would have to be willing to eat nearly the entire 15 million of Jones salary and then yes they could probably get a 1st and a player but then your back to the start of having NO cap room.

  19. I betting line on a trade is the stupidest thing ever. No one outside Atlanta and its trade partners knows anything. If you bet that line you’re a fool. But that’ what the sports books bets want–betting on absurd props. We do live in the Era of Morons.

  20. A 1st for a wr that’s on the wrong side of 30..injuries are starting and there’s no Qb in Ne… do it !!

Belichek decisions are fun to watch.

  22. Why not have just done all this last year and kept Brady? Dude just wanted some help.

  23. Patriots will contend. Little doubt of that with that defense this year. If the offense clicks, they will be considerably better than last years squad.
I would certainly welcome Julio Jones. Mac Jones was known at Bama for hitting those great receivers in full stride. Nelson Agholor, Julio Jones, Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith would be a far cry from what they fielded last year.

There are obviously some hopeful Pats fans who believe that last season was a aberration and not the new norm.

The Patriots were 7-9 last season with no offense. Zero production from the TE position and minimal from the WR.

They added two very good TE and depth at WR and IF they add Jones that makes that group better
and already have a very good O line and RBs

They had a top 10 D last season with Hightower and most of the season without Gilmore. They will return and the free agents they added on D.

If the Patriots crybabies think they won’t be improved over last season and won’t be a playoff contender at the least those Patriots crybabies are going to be just as disappointed as the Brady crybabies weee last season when they said he would fail in Tampa

  26. I expect Winovich to be part of any trade for Julio. He adds some pass rush on the cheap rookie deal for Atlanta and the Patriots have young up and coming LB’s to make room for. Perkins does what Wino does, and Perkins plays Special Teams, so I could see NE letting Wino go. If Atl picked up 5 mil of salary for year one of the trade, I could maaaybe see Winovich and a 2nd. I hate to see them give up a 2nd though. This years second became Christian Barmore, so they are potentially trading away a good young player with that 2nd round pick for a WR that is closer to 33 than he is to 32. Maybe Wino and a 3rd rounder. The question is, if Julio has two good seasons left, what is two good seasons of very good wide receiver play worth? If a player was drafted and gave you two good seasons but nothing after that, and you spent a 3rd round pick on him, would you feel you got your money’s worth? In the NE system, he’s probably not getting more than 50-60 catches. It’s hard to see them parting with a 2nd round pick and the rookie salary deal you get for that in exchange for a couple of seasons with a wide receiver that may have some injury issues.
I heard he was load balancing practices last season. I can’t see him developing chemistry and learning the play book practicing once a week. The medical people will have to be all over this one. It’s dicey. Beware shiny object syndrome. If the Patriots pull the trigger I hope it is not over the top compensation, and they can pull the plug on the deal after one season if he comes up lame.

  27. I hope he goes to the Bucs. Will be funny watching an epic Tampa Bay Tommy choke with a superteam.

    ————————

I hope Pats get Aaron Rodgers, which will completely expose Belichick as a garbage HC.

Seriously, if you look at WR group (size and speed) Rodgers had in Packers, you will know that he won’t look good with the squad Pats have now.

  28. The Patriots were 7-9 last season with no offense. Zero production from the TE position and minimal from the WR.

    ————————

That is typical for a team that focus on defense, 5 to 9 wins, depending on which direction balls bounce, not mention that at the beginning of the season, opponents had no clue how he would play, the reason he played like probowl in first 3 games.

Pats defense will get worse and worse. History shows that Belichick needed tons of resources to build good regular season defense that can’t win if opponent scored 20 or more.

  29. Going after Julio with Cam as our starter is just stupid…..
However, if they do, As stated above, I believe Wino is already on the endangered list with Bill due to his freelancing….. so Wino & Harry & a 3rd ( with potential to be a 2nd based purely on availability to play) for Julio & that will allow the Pats & Atlanta to work a deal that is good for both teams….
Gilmore is ALSO a wild card here, but I hope the Pats extend him a couple more years but I doubt it….. I expect to see a TON. Of movement around the league come the 1st week of June…

  30. Brady is the reason for Patriots’ success. Plain and simple. They’re done now.

  31. Smart move. The pats are reloading with so so vets instead of retooling in the draft bc BB is struggling in the draft recently. If he was smart, he’d build up the roster with young talent to work with Mac Jones. There’s not a single wr currently on NE thst can outmatch buffalos 2-4 cb. Julio would at least allow Tre to break a sweat.
Sorry but Brandon Beans roster building currently resembles the BB of old in roster building better than the current BB .

It will be neck and neck for second in the division with Miami.

Gonna be fun watching the Patriots defense force Tampa Bay Tommy into a 4 INT multiple sack game in Foxboro this year. Belichick knows him very well and it will be obvious. In fact you can take it to the bank as a stone cold lock, there is no doubt at all it’s going to be a loooong night for poor ol’ Tampa Bay Tommy in his old house. 🙂

  37. The Pats gave up too much for Mohamed Sanu. Now they have eyes for Julio Jones? The way this is going, in eight years they’ll want Calvin Ridley.

  38. Pats should hang on to Harry another year, but send Sony Michel and Stidham along with a 5th rounder and have ATL pay half of his salary this year.

You know what the difference between Tampa last year and New England this year? Tampa had a qb whereas new england doesn’t and u til mac Jones shows hes starter material you can have a top 10 this and that but the bottom line is if you somehow get to the playoffs your not going anywhere. Everyone likes to point to teams like the Ravens with Dilfer as proof you can win without a top qb but what that shows is it’s an aberration and you cant win without a good qb unless everything lines up perfectly and you get a little lucky(just as the ravens had that year)

  46. Yes –The Pats might do the trade for Julio -because Belichick would sell his soul to prove that he can win without Brady. It won’t matter “Bill”- Your win/loss record without Brady has already shown you are just an AVERAGE NFL coach. Repeat -in case you have your hoodie on–AVERAGE

  47. The Pats don’t pay top money to players, especially 32YO players, so Jones to NE isn’t happening unless he signs for less and seeing how Juilo wants a new contract every year that isn’t happening!

That would be wonderful since Im a Pats fan before being a Brady fan. But if I look at it objectively I dont see this as likely if both teams play to ability. And lets face it, Brady really is that good, Im not crazy about facing him at all.

The real challenge for the Patriots like the rest of their schedule is what they’ll get from their QB. No clue.
