Will the Jaguars have a Tim Tebow package?

USA TODAY Sports

When Tim Tebow officially got a spot on the 90-man roster in Jacksonville, many said it won’t last. Quickly, many of those many have realized that, with the man who hired Tebow in the first place being the same man who will decide whether Tebow makes the team, the chances of Tebow having a spot on the roster come September are far greater than they would be for the usual last man in.

On PFT Live in the days before Tebow finally was signed, Simms and I said (partially in jest) that it was just a matter of time before coach Urban Meyer found a way to get Tebow on the field, as a quarterback.

It’s now looking like it’s no joke. And it’s easy to say, “Well, the Saints have done it with Taysom Hill for the past few years” to justify the Jaguars doing it with Tebow. Indeed, the fact that Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t bat an eye about taking the ball out of Drew Brees’ hands has undercut the long-held belief that gadget plays should be used only rarely when a true franchise quarterback is on the team. So if Brees could stand down for Hill, Trevor Lawrence should have no qualms about periodically splitting wide or leaving the field for Tebow to take a snap in shotgun formation to run it, hand it off, or throw it.

Frankly, it seems inevitable at this point. Inevitable that Tebow will make the team, either as a member of the 53-man roster or as a participant on the practice squad, getting called up to the game-day roster as part of the rule that allows two of the extra players to be promoted each week.

That said, Tebow isn’t close to being as skilled as Hill, who is now part of the competition to become the starting quarterback in New Orleans. Hill is much faster than Tebow ever was. Hill is a more accurate passer than Tebow ever was or will be. Hill, unlike Tebow, doesn’t have a release that conjures memories of the gradual cranking of a catapult.

None of that matters. If Meyer wants it, Meyer gets it. And if Meyer uses it at the right time (like from the one-yard line) and Tebow powers his way into the end zone with the Hulk Hogan-style 24-inch pythons he has sprouted on his upper arms, Meyer will be justified for showing faith in a man who football had forgotten.

That won’t change the fundamental nature of the exercise. It’s a Refrigerator Perry-style gimmick. But if the gimmick passes the eyeball test, the gimmick will draw even more eyeballs, and dollars, to Jaguars games.

  1. Let’s be honest, the NFL is entertainment !! If Tebow can help the team win and is fun to watch then what is the big deal ? The guy is taking the slot of a bench warmer #5 TE and is making league minimum, so why not ?

  2. Let’s not undersell Tebow as an athlete. He had the 3red fastest 40 time among that years QB class. The fastest shuttle and best vertical. The dude runs like a prime Peyton Hillis.

  3. Interesting, we have gone from no chance he makes the team to good chance he makes the team.
It’s Meyers team to coach, he will make the decisions, not the media or fans.

  4. Tebow may provide entertainment, but if Urban thinks that a bunch of college plays will help is team, he’s in for a huge surprise.

I think there is a good chance that Tebow makes the team, NOT that he should make the team.

I feel bad for Lawrence for being stuck on that team.

  5. Tebow didn’t have the catapult release his last two stops, he didn’t have it in high school, and Tom House coached it out of him too. If the lawyer knew anything about football he would know that.

  6. “He had the 3red fastest 40 time among that years QB class. The fastest shuttle and best vertical.”

That was 11 years ago..and he hasn’t played on snap in 9 years. And he’s not a quarterback nowl. He needs the speed and skills of NFL tight ends. Saying he had the 3rd fastest time “for QBs” is like saying he was the 3rd prettiest person in the leper colony.

Jaguars are finishing 3rd in their division. It would be 4th, but they are lucky enough to be in the same division as the Texans.

  7. Looks like urban is doing it right. Good that Trevor has a good coach

  8. Wow. Way to cover all the bases you think ?
    Tebow won’t be signed
Tebow won’t make it through camp.
    Tebow won’t make the 53
Tebow won’t make the 53 at best a practice squad player

    Tebow could make the 53
Tebow could see time at QB
Tebow could see time at TE
Tebow could be a scoring threat in the RedZone

No matter the outcome the Lawyer had it right and was spot on. Hahaha he knew it

  9. Tebow will make the 53 man roster as a utility player. He will play TE,QB,H-BACK,FB & ST just like Jim Jensen did for the Dolphins back in the Marino era. Why is that so hard for people to believe that a 33 year old man in pristine physical condition can’t make the team as a utility player? If you are playing any of those positions only part-time on a few select plays a game, you would have to be dummer than a box of rocks to not be able to do it. I played high school football mostly as a QB,then sometimes as a WR,CB,SS & ST.It’s not hard to play multiple posititions if you are a smart and a very skilled athlete. Best of luck to you Tim,I hope that you prove all of your jealous doubters and haters wrong! Go Jaguars!

    ____________

Way to pat yourself on the back. However, you need to be a little better than a very skilled high schooler to play all of those positions in the NFL.

  11. “Why is that so hard for people to believe that a 33 year old man in pristine physical condition can’t make the team as a utility player?”

Tebow may make the team, but a good head coach would not want him on the team. There are MANY great players still available that are better athletes and have played football very recently…..and are much younger…and in better shape.

Tebow is a nice guy and I wish him well, but Urban is living in the past if he thinks that Tebow will help the team.

  12. I said a long time ago this wouldn’t be as a TE, but as a red zone weapon like he was used by Meyer when Chris Leak was the QB. No one could tell where the TE rumor came from, but they jumped on it.

  13. Young QB’s don’t usually pay their best football when they first step foot on the field, but Tebow took the reigns of a 1-4 Broncos team, and won 7 of the first eight games he started. That’s unheard of. He was never given time to mature. He was blackballed I guess for his cult like following. It certainly didn’t have anything to do with the fact that he was having tons of success, and winning playoff games. We’ve seen others get blackballed for off the field reasons, so it’s not like Tebow’s was an isolated instance. But Urban Meyer only wants to win. He doesn’t care what you or I think. He might put out a suggestion box for us, but I haven’t seen it yet.

  14. Tebow had a completion percentage of UNDER 50%, which is horrible.

Denver won those games in spite of Tebow, not because of him. They had a great defense and a good running game.

  15. “It certainly didn’t have anything to do with the fact that he was having tons of success, and winning playoff games. ”

Winner? Tebow had a career record of 9-7. That’s a 56% winning percentage…hardly “tons of success”. And Tebow didn’t win playoff gameS. He won ONE playoff game…and barely.

Tebow’s winning percentage wouldn’t even put in in the top 15 of current NFL quarterbacks. And Tebow’s completion percentage of UNDER 50% wouldn’t even put him in the top 40 of the current QBs, including backups.

I know that people like Tebow. He’s a good guy. But he’s a terrible QB and likely even worse as a tight end.

  16. First off, Tebow was/is not a good NFL QB. People trying to make the case he is are delusional. That said, I don’t understand all the overblown negative reaction to Meyer giving Tebow a shot at being a role player. Tebow is an athlete and is versatile enough to create headaches for defenses in short yardage situations. He’ll have to prove that he is at least competitive at various positions to make the team. If he can do that, the Jags can use him effectively in limited situations.

  17. The question shouldn’t be whether Tebow is good enough to play. The question should be whether he is better than the other available players.

  18. He might be a bit useful. He throws better than Taysom Hill but isn’t nearly as fast.

  19. Funny how nobody in the media is talking about Trevor Lawrence. What a great plan to take pressure off the first pick.

  20. Really? Sideshow Timmy? I can’t believe people think he has a chance to make the team learning a new position. He’ll be 34 years old
when the season starts. He’ll get crushed in either training camp or preseason. C’mon dude. Give up the charade.

  21. Dude sales Jerseys and will put fans in the seats I have never seen anything like it but people either love or hate him man Vince McMahon should have locked him into the wwe he could have started out as the boy next door then turn to the dark side

  22. Why is Taysom Hill better than Tebow? Tebow has better numbers in college and the pros than Taysom Hill. Tebow plays alot faster than 4.8 and he’s bigger and has better wiggle than Hill

  23. Tebow is a tool. He was signed to sell jerseys and other merch. He will be gone by opening day. He’s not that good.

  24. If Tim Tebow helps the team win, he will remain in uniform. If he doesn’t perform as required, he’ll be cut. I’m not sure what the problem is.

  25. “Why is Taysom Hill better than Tebow? Tebow has better numbers in college and the pros than Taysom Hill. Tebow plays alot faster than 4.8 and he’s bigger and has better wiggle than Hill”

Hill is faster and a better runner than Tebow. Hill is a MUCH BETTER QB than Tebow.

Any mention of Tebow’s skills is from NINE YEARS AGO.

The problems that I and many posters, here, have are NOT with Tebow. They are with Urban for giving Tebow a chance over younger, faster, more talented players.

Tebow may be able to punch the ball in from the 1. He may even be able to throw a TD pass, from the 1. But he’s a gimic, much like Refrigerator Perry was years ago.

  26. Let’s see here, take the time to design part of the playbook(hours & hours) aroud a guy you don’t even know if will be on the 53 man roster or not?

    Not likely!

Now if he makes the 53 man roster that’s a different story!
