Could Mac Jones emerge as the Week One starter in New England?

Patriots Draft Pick Mac Jones

The Patriots really like quarterback Cam Newton. But they didn’t like him enough to refrain from taking another quarterback with the fifteenth overall pick in the draft.

So now that Mac Jones is in the fold, can Jones ascend to the top of the depth chart before Week One?

Mike Reiss of ESPN.com emerged from seeing Jones at Thursday’s OTA session believing that the rookie already has shown that he’s mastering the nuances of the new England offense.

“Along those lines,” writes Reiss, “every throw from Jones in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills Thursday seemed to go to the right place. There was little, if any, indecisiveness. He’s probably further along than any Patriots rookie quarterback, at this point, than anyone who came before him.”

But Newton also has looked good as he enters his second season with the team. It’s possible that the Patriots will have two extremely viable options at quarterback. And if both are able to run the offense at a high level, consider this possibility: What if coach Bill Belichick, who crafts each week’s game plan based on the specific strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, and tells of the defense he’ll be facing, picks a quarterback each week based on which of the two options, Newton or Jones, will be better suited to run the plays envisioned for that week’s defense?

That possible approach cuts against the importance of having one quarterback who leads the team. But it potentially meshes with the idea that Belichick is always playing 4D chess, while everyone else isn’t.

  1. Bill can also put two throwers on the field at the same time. Imagine Newton running the plays where Edelman threw it.

  2. I predict Newton is the opening day starter, but Jones will get playing time.
Belichick is more interested in developing ones than alternating QBs.

  3. I would never compare him to TB12, but I can see his work ethic mirroring a young TB12, who always won practice player of the week in his early years.

  4. If you have two quarterbacks, you have none. In the unlikely event that Jones looks like the guy that gives them the best chance to win, then he can start and maybe flip cam before the trade deadline in case a guy somewhere else gets hurt or struggles.

If Bill has success in year 1 with the fifth QB of the board and then gets trade value back for Newton, that’s plenty of 4D chess.

  5. The 4D chess game moved to Tampa. Now Bill is just one of the other 31 coaches who don’t have Tom Brady.

  6. This 2021 offense is built to run the ground and pound and Cam is really good at run 1st, throw second.

Mac daddy (I do like “release the Mac-ken”) takes the full reigns in 2022, barring injury.

Given a full off season to sharpen and hone the tools in his belt, Cam will certainly be better than last year, but the one thing that bothered me most about him in 2020 was his horrendous throwing mechanics. Now, even after working with Tom House, there are early whispers that they don’t look much better.

That was a little disappointing to hear but if you live long enough, you see things go around the face of the clock and then come back around again: I am interested to see the power of the dominant run game make a triumphant return to the NFL. And that’s exactly what the Patriots will do in 2021.

  7. Of course. He will have earned it, but BB giving Cam the job last year was just strange.

A lot iof this is BB using Newton to drive competition.

  8. It’s Cam’s job to lose. The only way that Mac gets the job on day one is to show that he is clearly superior and gives the team a better chance to win. Belichick is all about winning this year as can be seen by the off season moves that he has made.

  9. Is it me or are Belichick and the Patriots dominating PFT threads again?

But what about Arians and Reid? Are they not the geniuses loaded with talent and teams with no weaknesses?

Why would so many non-Pats fans comment on Patriots threads?

    All rhetorical questions.

  10. Cam Lost the pats 2 games last year.

How many did they win because of him?

  11. Is it me or are Belichick and the Patriots dominating PFT threads again?

No bias here, Belichick vs Brady is still the dominating topic in NFL. Every fan and every export had strong opinion on it.

For those who believed in Brady believed Brady was treated unfairly (especially by Pats fans who give most credits to Belichick) and sort of like looking for justice now. For those who believed in Belichick, they were hit hard by 2020 season. It will be a huge embarrassment to them if Belichick fails.

  12. The Bills stomped the Pats late last year the way the Pats did the Bills for 20 years. If that’s 4D chess, he better go back to Chutes and Ladders.

  13. Unless Jones really explodes in training camp (which he could very possibly do) OR Cam still looks like dog crap trying to throw the ball or unable to read defenses (which was the case last year), Bill will start Cam & give him a shot to lead & keep Mac in the learning circle behind the scenes…..Jarrett is probably either kept as Macs back up NEXT YEAR or traded…. Hoyer is a camp body only & probably there to mentor Jones with the play book all pre season & training camp…..
I so hope Mac just tears it up & starts but I doubt I’ll be that lucky & will have to suffer thru SCams putrid production…..

  14. >Cam will certainly be better than last year, but the one thing that bothered me most >about him in 2020 was his horrendous throwing mechanics. Now, even after working with >Tom House, there are early whispers that they don’t look much better.

I’m curious where those whispers are coming from, since Tom House himself had talked publicly about how he looks better this year and has had the time to work on the stuff that got derailed last year with Cam’s Covid-forced inactive days.

  15. Cam Newton has been washed up ever since he decided to not attempt to recover his fumble in the Super Bowl!

Real Pats fans know you need two good qbs. One to start and one to be ready. Not a hard concept.

Scummy, fake bandwagon Pats “fans” bash new players and unknowns because they need the media to praise a player to make them feel secure about commenting on said player. That’s you, loser.

You are the same guy who mocks Scarnecchia’s draft picks and mock Bill Belichick, the greatest GM and Coach in N. American sports history.

    ———-

I’m other words, you’re backtracking what you said about Stidham being the future starter and star of the team. Shocking, you were wrong again. Because if you were right, no way Mac Jones gets chosen. But he did. And that should’ve upset you right off the bat.

Umm, yes, there was also this thing called a pandemic. If BB wanted a starter he wouldn’t have waited until 7.26 for camp to open and name.

I could care less what the name on the jersey is, I just know what a good qb prospect looks like.

Jones, Stidham, Joe Blow, they better be able to throw accurately and on time.

In BB We Trust. End of discussion.

BTW, Belichick’s believers have been biased for 20 years, even now, though they have no clue what made Pats offense worked, but sill willing to believe that it was a defensive mind who invented an offense system that no other coaches and QB could command. (hence they believe it was Belichick)

Tampa Bay Tommy pouted his way off the team and took shots at Bill and the Patriots when he was gone. “Football is fun again” or something. I am a fan of Brady and as disappointing as that was to hear it shouldn’t have been a surprise. The guy is simply not and never was a paragon of humility that his apologists like to think he is.

Also I’d be willing to bet money if it were possible that the 2020 Patriots still miss the playoffs if Brady stuck around. He was done here both on and off the field and he certainly made that clear.

All good though cause the Pats defense is going to make him wish he took week 4 off. That’s a stone cold lock. 🙂

I don’t think they’re going to go that way now. If they were they would have kept Thuney who is an elite run blocker in the league. I’d just like to see Michel and Harris stay healthy.

  22. GoodellMustGo,

In the middle of 3rd quarter in SB against Chiefs, Brady threw an “easy” pass to Gronk for 25 yards gain.

Watch it, see if you can figure out why Gronk could gain 25 yards. Like I said, QB position is too complicated for you.

  23. Cam is such a gifted athlete but I cannot take him seriously with the wild hairstyles and ridiculous clothes!!
    What is wrong with him???

  24. Anytime you read Mike Reiss’s work, just ask yourself, “what would Robert Kraft want him to say?” There it is, that’s the article.

  25. Cam Newton will start the year…but it will end one of two ways…IR or cut…because a healthy Cam getting benched for white Matt Jones ain’t gonna be pretty…

As much as I think Reiss is a good guy, I have to agree. It’s why Reiss never said a bad word about Brady. Ever.

Brady could lead the team to 14 points in anofher sb, throw a couple more awful ints, and Reiss would act like it had no bearing on the loss.

  28. Imagine reducing two decades of NFL dominance to one player, who albeit does play QB. It’s an insult to the coaches, special teams, defense, the offensive line, and skill offensive players.

Effectively, those that are part of this cult imply all the coaches and other players are interchangeable with those on any other team.

  29. SCAM Newton is only worthy as a backup QB in the NFL now. He has been underthrowing and overthrowing receivers in football his entire NFL career. In Carolina,it was mostly overthrowing to wide open receivers. Sure you can say that he can still run the football well but he is not as fast or agile as he was back in 2018. I waited with bated breath for him to finally leave the Panthers. I did not want Carolina to draft him in 2011. I thought that the team made a huge mistake with that pick. I wanted Von Miller,Julio Jones,A.J. Green or J.J. Watt with that #1 pick overall that year. Even trading down to a lower 1st round pick, acquiring a 2nd round pick and taking Andy Dalton in the 2nd round would have been a better choice for Carolina. Heck,I had Jake Locker or Blaine Gabbert ranked higher before Newton that year. At least Gabbert is still playing in the NFL today,Locker flamed out due to injury.

  30. Mac Jones will beat out SCAM Newton by the end of preseason. You can take that to the bank and deposit it.

And that’s exactly the reason why Tommy is gonna get a whooping in week 4.

It’s not Belichick. It’s the Patriots players. Especially guys like McCourty and Slater who have been around for a while – they’re now hearing that every single one of them is worthless and Brady was the one and only reason why they were successful.

That isn’t going over too well with them, there is no doubt at all about that.

And now you’re mad because it wasn’t the answer you wanted and I completely and thoroughly incinerated the Tampa Bay Tommy cult thinking that the QB is the only player on a team who matters. 😀

No, I am not mad at all. I said before : I didn’t post for today, I posted them for future when Belichick was finally exposed and can’t wait to see what kind of excuses you people will pull out. It doesn’t matter now if Brady wins another SB or plays like a garbage in 2021 season.

BTW, I showed you why Brady was irreplaceable in SB 2002, the criteria you use to judge a player.

  49. “Of course. He will have earned it, but BB giving Cam the job last year was just strange.”

SOMEBODY had to start and the only other options were Hoyer and Stidham. And looking at their QB ratings from last year, Bill stuck with the better of the 3. The only thing strange is that BB came really close to having to start Hoyer/Stidham if not for that late Cam signing.
