The Texans are adding another ex-Patriot to their roster.

Veteran running back Rex Burkhead has signed with the Texans, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Texans General Manager Nick Caserio previously worked in New England and has brought in several former Patriots this offseason, including wide receiver Donte Moncrief, tackle Marcus Cannon, tight end Ryan Izzo, safety Terrence Brooks and defensive end Derek Rivers.

The 30-year-old Burkhead has played the last four years for the Patriots. Last year he had 67 carries for 274 yards and 25 catches for 192 yards. He has always been a significant contributor on special teams, and if he’s going to make the Texans’ roster, that will be a part of his role in Houston as well.

Burkhead is the third well-known addition the Texans have made at running back this offseason, following Mark Ingram and Phillip Lindsay.

  1. Burkhead is the guy that a team wouldn’t protect in an expansion draft. And that’s what the Texans are this year … an expansion team. What a mess.

  2. Meh I don’t feel bad for him. He’s getting paid NFL money for another year at least when no other team apparently wanted to do so.

  3. Rex goes from a contender to a pretender. Oh well, most players only play for the money and its not even a real job to them now anyways. It’s kind of like that Navy slogan years ago,”Its not a job,its an adventure”. Good luck with the Texans Rex.Now that team is an adventure!

  4. Rex is a darn good #4 RB for a team. Really runs hard, can catch out of the backfield or so lit wide and throws his body around almost recklessly to get yards. And then he gets hurt. Fun guy that watch. I’ll be rooting fir him from afar.

  5. It seems like mocking the Texans is on autopilot at this point. While they’ve definitely done some things to earn it, look at the coaching and player roster that they’ve built up. They may be missing some real stars (in the presumed absence of Watson, not that he made any difference last season), but they are putting together a sneaky-good and solid lineup there. And they’ll likely be in great shape for the next draft. Don’t look now, but this may end up working out after all.

  6. “look at the coaching and player roster that they’ve built up.”
    ___________

They just hired a 65-year-old who has never been a head coach before. Not exactly a hire that left other teams crying in their beer.

  7. Burkhead is a good player when healthy. Pretty strong runner with good hands. Unfortunately his body does not seem to be able to hold up to the demands of the NFL.

  8. Rex was a prototypical patriot. A role Player plugged in and was successful. I actually don’t blame Caserio for what he is doing here. You can basically count on Watson not aging for awhile maybe never again. The roster is brutal, so you might as well get a defensive minded coach from an organization my patriots are close with (ravens) run the ball at will, and try to keep it close

  9. This is a little baffling. Bulkhead and Lindsay are virtual clones of each other. 2 undersized tailbacks who play all out, hustle, and often end up hurt.

As bad as the ‘pretender” Texans were last season, they still beat the “contender” Patriots. Deshaun Watson is now 2-2 against the Patriots. You’re welcome for those factoids.

  11. Texans are getting a really good running back when healthy.

    Always goes forwards, never backwards.

    Can run, catch and block.

    My kind of RB.

Good luck to a hard working guy who deserves it.

  12. Good luck to him glad he has a chance to make a roster somewhere he plays hard and hes a champion.

  13. He is not going to be as effective without the Patriots’ play calling.

  14. Good luck and onto the next chapter Rex! You’re a consumate pro and the Pat’s fan base will be rooting for you!

  15. Good player. Tough as nails. I am a fan.

Thanks for 2018, Rex. You, Sony a d White made it easy on Brady which he’ll need as he ages.

That last part is why it is not baffling for having both of them. One goes down and the other is there to step in. Maybe if they are on a rotation they can avoid injury.
