Dan Marino rooting against Bill Belichick breaking Don Shula’s NFL wins record

Don Shula surpassed George Halas as the NFL’s all-time winningest coach in 1993. He has held the record since.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick, though, has 280 regular-season victories, only 49 short of breaking Shula’s record of 328. Shula has 347 career victories when including the postseason, while Belichick has 311.

Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, who has seen others break his passing records the past 20 years, is rooting against Belichick. It is not surprising given Marino played for Shula for 13 seasons.

“I hope he don’t get it,” Marino said, via Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. “I’m a Dolphin for life. Coach Shula for life. I don’t want him to get it.”

Marino, who now works for the Dolphins as a team advisor, fondly remembers his former coach, who died May 4, 2020, at the age of 90.

“He was the best,” Marino told Wolfe. “He took care of me all the time. He was an incredible man and head coach. He taught me how to be in the community, be a leader, work hard. But from Day 1 — which I thought was genius — he said I want you to be the starting QB so you have to learn this quickly and now you’re going to call all your plays in practice and exhibition games. It takes more work instead of a coach telling you what to run. You have to think about it beforehand; you have to prepare for it beforehand.

“I always thought that was special and probably different than what a lot of people do now I’d imagine. It would be a lot harder to do it now than it was then, but it did put a lot of pressure on me to learn quickly.”

  1. Unless Mac Jones games in the pros mirrors his game from college, Bill will not see those 49 wins…
Bills age and the likelihood the Patriots will be lucky to win 8 this season, make it even more unlikely he gets that record!

  2. I would’ve loved to be there helping Bill, but he stabbed me in the back so now I’m winning rings elsewhere. Hope Don keeps the record, he was class all the way.

  3. Any chance to root against that blowhard Shula is fine by me. Go Belichick!

  4. Shula was a putz. The dude literally blew Marino’s entire prime. He was a salty, sour grapes, cantankerous dude his entire career…and so was Shula.

  5. “I hope he dont get it”. I thought Dan Marino was a little more eloquent than that.

  6. I wouldn’t expect any less from the ex-Dolphin, but the closer Belichick gets to the record the more motivated he will be to stick it out. Plus the 17 game seasons will help.

  7. Shula was able to bring 4 different QB’s to the Super Bowl. Belichick is a one trick pony and that pony is in Tampa now…

Belichick of Cleveland Browns is back. You think Kraft will let him coach 5 seasons?

  9. In my opinion, no one who was unable to win a Super Bowl with Dan Marino at QB deserves to hold any records.

Brady is Belichick’s success. Without him? He’s ordinary.

Silly comment. Every great coach needs a great QB, and every great QB needs a great coach. Otherwise their success will be less than it would be otherwise.

  11. The upcoming season will say a lot about Bill Belichick’s chances to win the remaining games to pass Don Shula. If NE wins 12+, then it’s a borderline lock. If they struggle to hit 6 wins, the chances go to near 0 unless BB wants to coach another 10 years.

  12. Doubt BB at your own risk.

People who know understand he was the driving force behind the NYG Superbowls under Parcells, too.

Every team Bill ever was involved with was always tough to beat.

His players have not always been the best but they’ve always been well coached and put in the right position to make plays.

I always dreaded Belichick coached Teams before he ever came to the Patriots.

Shula won nothing without Bob Greise at QB. He rode Greise to two SB wins.

Shulas playoff record is 19-17 and a sorry 2-4 in Super Bowls. On top of the that, the team he coached that lost to the Jets in 1968, turned around and WON the SB in 1970 with a first year head coach.

It is about who is easy to be replaced.

Parcel spent most of resources on defense when he was in Giants.

Belichick needed tons of resouces to build a defense that was still not comparable to all time great defenses like 1986 Bears, 2000 Ravens and LOB, and he couldn’t accomplish anything unless OTHERs gave him top offense or the offense stayed on fields for long long time.

  16. Shula coached for 15 years when the nfl regular season was only 14 games. If BB does catch Shula there should be an asterisk.

  17. Shula’s win percentage without his best QB (Marino)…. 69%
Belichicks win percentage without his best QB (Brady)… 47%

Shula without Marino had 11 winning seasons, 9 playoff appearances, 4 Super Bowl appearances and 2 Super Bowl wins. Until Belichick does anything remotely this successful with a QB not named Tom Brady its not even close. For the record I think Belichick is a great coach but to say his success isn’t directly attributable to Brady is ridiculous. Lets see him do it with someone else.

  18. and for all you guys saying Shula is better because he has more wins or a better win %, just remember he did it before all the salary cap and player moving around with free agency. It is simply harder to be the top dog in todays NFL than it was 40-50 years ago

Having the best QB of all time certainly more than makes up for the salary cap/free agency issues. Shula went to a Super Bowl with Earl Morrel… Earl was 78 years old at the time (I joke). Can Belichick do it without Brady? I guess time will tell.

  20. Shula is a hall of fame coach. Marino is a hall of fame QB. It is damning that they were together like 15 years and won ZERO SB. It is only natural that they both had a lot of envy for what BB and TB12 accomplished. Sour grapes. Poor Danny Boy

  21. Can Belichick do it without Brady?

Kraft was not a patient owner. He forced Bill Parcel to draft a WR in 1996 (Glenn) and gave Bledsoe the fattest contract in 2000, and I believe that he had a hand in free-agency splurge.

Belichick has to take Pats to AFCCG in 2021 or 2022 season, or he will (be forced to) resign.

  22. Tarp-gate was a disgrace to the league and the sport.

Go Bill! Leave that cheater Shula’s name in the dust.

  23. Lets see him do it with someone else.

    11-5 with Matt Cassell
3-1 with a very green Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett.

I’m afraid wishful thinking doesn’t make it so 🙂 Telling sad pouty Tommy to hit the road has no bearing on Bill’s job security. He is coach for as long as he wants to be.

How about 7-9 with the roster he had in 2020? That is about triple the number of wins most other coaches would have had.

That is typical from a team that focus on defense, 5 to 9 wins depends on where the balls bounce, not mention in first quarter of the season, other teams didn’t know how Pats offense looked like.

Actually, what happened to Cam Newton should invalidate any records mentioned by GoodellMustGo, because it shows how important other teams have idea on how a QB will play.

  29. Marino: “I hope he don’t get it”

English Language :”Why don’t Miami get you to talk good”

  30. Shula, being a petty miser (along with all the undefeated dolphins) that so happily danced on other teams Graves, He made sure to pat himself on the back ANY TIME HE COULD, and got his ass kissed til death. Add to him Marino, A guy who won nothing but put up big useless numbers before Farve or Stafford. 2 people always mad at others for success, so likable. Why did anyone ask his opinion to start with? Best thing he ever did was not kill a dolphin in Ace Ventura

Don Shula took an Earl Morrell lead team to the Superbowl in 1969… then did it again with him (going undefeated) 4 seasons later on a completely different team….. he won in 5 different era’s of FB stretching from the 60’s Colts to the 90’s fast paced Dolphins. He went from a 3 yards and a cloud of dust defensive coach, to letting loose the most effective passer in NFL history (Marino retired with 27 passing records). He had a total of 2 losing seasons in 33 years of being a NFL head coach….. no one… and I mean no one.. will do the these he was able to do ever again. He was the swiss army coach and the GOAT. And if bragging about that pisses you off.. that may say more about you than him buddy.
