Despite being the first receiver selected in last year’s NFL Draft, Las Vegas Raiders wide out Henry Ruggs was out-classed by many of his fellow rookie pass catchers across the league in 2020.

Among rookies, Ruggs ranked 11th in yards (452), 21st in receptions (26), tied for 15th in touchdowns (2) and 19th in targets (43). Ruggs was slowed by a knee injury last season and missed three games in total.

Now entering his second year with the Raiders, Ruggs is eager to take on more within the team’s offense and show what he can really do.

Of course I’m ready to assume a bigger role,” Ruggs said via the team’s website. “Last year, for me to describe it, it was a start. That’s pretty much the best way I can describe it. Something to build on; it was a starting point, and we’re going to build from there. And of course, like I said, I’m ready to take on a bigger role and help my team in a bigger way.”

Ruggs was on the field for slightly more than half of the team’s offensive snaps last year. Given better injury luck he’ll likely see more playing time this year with greater comfort in the team’s offense as well.

Fellow receiver Hunter Renfrow said that while Ruggs wasn’t producing as much with catches himself, his speed presence helped open things up for the rest of their offense.

But Ruggs is eager to show he’s capable of living up to the expectations himself as well.

I don’t think anybody’s expectations for me is higher than myself,” Ruggs said, via W.G. Ramirez of the Associated Press. “If I’m frustrated with anything, it’s because I didn’t do what I felt like I can do or what I’m able to achieve. It’s not critics, and what the coaches, or what other players around the league may say about me. It doesn’t really do too much for me because I know what I can do and I’m my biggest critic so no one else can make me feel bad about that.”

  1. He’s raw, always was. I wish people realized he was looked upon as helping them open stuff up (like he did in y1) and producing more himself in y2 and 3. He’s on track.

  2. Ruggs was like the third best receiver on his own team in college. Was just a terrible draft pick by raiders. These were his stats

    Fresh 12 catches 229 yds
    Soph 46 catches 741 yards
    Jr 40 catches 746 yds

That shows he simply isn’t a consistent route runner who can routinely get open. Jeudy his teamate taken by Dallas put up huge numbers in same offense

  3. Taking Henry Ruggs before Justin Jefferson was another genius move by the Raiders front office. Ever since Mike Mayock took over, they’ve been making genius moves like taking Clelin Ferrell at 1.4 and Damon Arnette at 1.19. I’m sure taking Alex Leatherwood at 1.17 is going to turn out just as well!

  4. What role is that? Can he replace Khalil Mack? Can he play QB? Can he run the ball? Raiders still suck! Gruden and Mayock have been there four years and ZERO playoff appearances. Even if they made the playoffs they are not contenders so it would be a waste just Mayock making picks at an NFL draft!

  5. It would seem that most of the folks making comments do not watch the tape. Mack is an overpaid DE that is a one trick pony. Aaron Donald is much better. How many playoff sacks does Mack have for the amount of money he takes up on the salary cap?? What a joke… Josh Jacobs is a much better value, straight up, better deal for the Raiders…

Amari Cooper, how many playoff touchdowns per dollar ?? Another joke…

Cle Ferrell is a great run defender, don’t just look at sacks, wait till he gets healthy..

Be patient.. Reggie’s crappy picks are long gone… The team is improving each year..

  6. All Ruggs needs is opportunities, line him up wide and turn him loose. The kid has the speed AND smarts !!! Gruden and or his O/C kept wasting the kids energy running parallel with the line of scrimmage wasting valuable time and energy last year. Maybe Gruden should watch some old Dolphins film and see how Clayton and Duper were used!!!
    Just saying
