Mike Zimmer on Danielle Hunter: We’ll see what happens at minicamp

Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter has not been taking part in voluntary work with the Vikings the last two weeks and head coach Mike Zimmer said Wednesday that he doesn’t know what Hunter’s plans are for their upcoming mandatory minicamp.

Talk of Hunter’s desire for a new contract that would make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league has been going on since last year and he missed a $100,000 workout bonus this offseason by choosing not to participate in the offseason program. Zimmer said on Wednesday that he hasn’t spoken to Hunter about his absence or what’s next.

“We’ll just see when the minicamp shows up,” Zimmer said.

Hunter had 29 sacks over the 2018 and 2019 seasons, but missed last season with a neck injury and is under contract through 2023. That and a smaller salary cap may make it hard to convince the Vikings to address his deal before Hunter has to decide about foregoing even more money via fines for missing mandatory work.

  1. Hunter is going to have to play this year out with no new deal. I believe 20% of those that have this surgery can have prolonged symptoms with the possibility of nerve damage. Amazing player whose potential was (is?) still going up but management is going to want to see it on the field this year. Hopefully he’s fully healed and can create havoc once again.

  2. Didn’t play last year. Smallest salary cap in forever. Me thinks all players should take when they can get this year and think about next year for raises.

  3. It blows my mind that a guy who missed an entire season with an injury has the stones to hold out for a new contract. Especially if he’s seeking a contract that would “that would make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league”. Insanity.

  4. He won’t be there, but there’s no way he’ll risk missing a second straight season. The neck injury risk, coupled with the time off, would reduce his earning potential too greatly. At some point, he’ll need to understand the best thing he can do, is show up and ball out.

  5. Seems weird that he’d take this stance now after the injury and lousy cap situation. Hunter has always been a low-key, even-keeled and thoughtful player. He should know dang well the Vikes will pay him well if he returns healthy and plays well. I hate to throw the age-old undue outside influences contention out there, but you’ve got to wonder if he’s got the wrong people whispering in his ear.

  6. Hunter unhappy, Darrisaw already dinged up… Vikings may have trouble holding off the Lions for third place.

Highest paid defensive player? He’s not even a top 10 edge rusher.

Youngest player to hit 50 sacks in history……

  8. Trade him while the iron is hot, I guess.
He could be pretty good with Pierce and Tomlinson but Joey Bosa money is beyond ridiculous.

  9. Pay this man his money!!!
Danielle wants to be the highest paid defender in the NFL and he obviously deserves it.
He made like, what? Two whole Pro Bowls!
Pay this man, or he’s likely to suffer another “tweak”.

Stick to the big screen because you’re clearly clueless in the sports world mr wick.
I’m beyond sick of hunter, trade him for a 2nd or 3rd and wash your hands of this drama.

Why would you trade one of the best DE’s in football for less than a 1 and a 2? Of course, I wouldn’t trade him at all. I’d give him a very sweet contract, that starts next year.

Ridiculous because no DE should make that kind of money? Or ridiculous because you think Joey is better? Because, both have played in parts of 5 seasons. And Hunter’s stats are better in literally every single category. And they are only about 9 months apart in age.

Show up, play well, and earn that next big fat contract/extension.

I really think that’s all it will take. Asking for a new contract after you missed all of last season, and when the salary cap is the lowest it’s been in years? The worst year ever to hold out, if that’s what he ends up doing.

  14. It was truly just a “tweak” of some kind, it would make sense to pay him. If Zimmer was truly soft-pedaling the injury and it’s actually too uncertain and unpredictable to know if Hunter can still be a difference-maker, they should trade him. Hunter is PO’d from the worst timing in the world to suffer a head-scratching injury. If healthy he’d have been at the threshold of big coin, and he wants it! That’s some pretty tough cookies.
