Bruce Arians had Tom Brady take a look at receivers in the 2021 draft class

USA TODAY Sports

Whether they mean to do it or not, the Bucs are trolling the Packers.

While the Packers did indeed draft a receiver this year (for a change), the team’s inability to surround quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a deeper corps of pass catchers has become a sticking point for player and franchise. That disconnect has become exacerbated by the extent to which the Buccaneers have given quarterback Tom Brady a voice in the crafting of the roster.

As coach Bruce Arians explained on Wednesday during a visit with Rich Eisen, Brady received a specific pre-draft project earlier this year.

Look at these receivers and see if there is something you like,” Arians told Brady, via JoeBucsFan.com. “And I will critique your ability to critique receivers.”

Arians said Brady “did great” in his evaluation of the wideouts. “There are certain things he likes,” Arians said. “He likes really good, big, fast receivers.”

Presumably, fourth-round rookie Jaelon Darden arrived with Brady’s seal of approval. Darden adds to a stacked receiver room, including Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Scott Miller, and Tyler Johnson.

  1. “He likes really good, BIG, fast relievers”

Weren’t his favorite targets in New England (besides Gronk) Welker, Amendola, and Edelman??

  2. We’ve all had that boss that knew we were better at their job than they were. Then they would have you write your own evaluations and they would sign them. Yeah, this is like that.

  3. In addition to “really good, big and fast” Brady also values really good hands.

  4. I would imagine that Brady is outraged that after all his scouting work, Tampa didn’t take a WR until the 4th round.

  5. This has nothing to do with trolling the Packers. Rodgers doesn’t make himself available to his coach during the off season.

  6. The Bucs are not trolling the Packers, the media is. In any case, there are 6 more reasons why Arian’s would have Brady look at receivers in the draft class and the Packers not do the same with Rodgers.

  7. Brady should charge the Bucs extra for being a consultant. He has 7 SB credentials.

Brady had tons of say and control in NE. Numerous players were acquired with Brady’s approval. The Brady Fanboys and Brady’s victim mentality is the joke of the century.

TB’s window will be closing very fast with those contracts.

Brady was surrrounded by HOF or borderlne HOF players at numerous offensive positions going back to Corey Dillon which helped him win a ring.

The list goes on and on.

Brady is fixated on stat collection and ego strokes which is why BB walked.

  9. Brady always had his pick of slot receivers not so much speed guys. Only Moss and Gronk seemed like the all around talent that he always relied on although Edelman could sometimes be great even outside the slot position.

  10. I’m shocked this doesn’t happen more often with experienced players. I’m really surprised it doesn’t happen more often with current rosters and player cuts. Perfect case in point was when the Packers cut Jake Kumerow after Rodgers praised him. Really is there anyone on a football team that knows the receivers better than an MVP quarterback? Even the coaches? Why would you not listen to him? To me that cut was probably worse than the Love pick. It was nothing more than Gutie sticking a finger in Rodgers’ eye. Gutie was telling Rodgers, “I’m in charge. Shut up and play.”

Said it before, I’ll say it again. Regardless of who’s more to blame for this situation Gutie screwed up. He wanted Love to be HIS QB just like Ron had Favre and Ted had Rodgers. It’s all ego. But now? Well now his lasting legacy will be as the only GM who lost a QB that was the MVP. Currently he looks like an idiot. If he can’t get this fixed he’ll prove he IS an idiot regardless of what Mark Murphy said.

  11. Belichick should have done the same. Brady might have had some good suggestions and even if he chose Sunu and N’Keal he couldn’t blame the team for poor choices.

  12. If Rodgers retained a managers acumen he’d have demonstrated it by now. He’s not a manager. He’s not paid to be a manager. Leave it at that.

  13. There have been a few comments and articles about Arians and Brady recently that lead me to think Tom is being groomed for a coaching or front office position after he’s done playing. I think that’s an exciting possibility, and if it’s true I hope he stays with the Bucs!

Hey, I also like really good, big, fast receivers. Maybe I should get into scouting.

And Darden is 5’8″ and 174 pounds.

  16. Isn’t funny that Brady is to blame for all the losses and the team gets credit for all the wins. Wouldn’t the losses be a team effort too?

  17. Note to scouting department, we like really good, big, fast receivers. Wow, how insightful lol. Love me some BA, but sometimes he says really dumb stuff. But on the other hand it was posted here. So who’s the dummy?

Only Ding Dongs blame Brady for loses. The man has won SEVEN Super Bowls. You can’t go undefeated every game. Critics of Brady are only haters and wish he was on their team.

  19. If the Bucs are trolling anyone it’s Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll.

  20. It does not matter how good Brady’s teammates are. They are often in the Super Bowl. They went to the Super Bowl 10 times in 21 years. Rodgers has never been to the Super Bowl without a top 5 D. He’s like Dilfer that way.

Brady loved Randy Moss. Edelman & Amendola fell in the category of “when you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with”

  22. Considering every receiver that plays with Brady becomes a great receiver, the 4th round is about the earliest I’d take a receiver.
