Report: Multiple assistant coaches refusing vaccines, will be barred from field and meeting rooms

The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective, but some NFL coaches are refusing to get it anyway, and as a result they won’t be able to coach players up close.

Assistant coaches on at least four NFL teams are refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. If they don’t change their minds within the next week, they will lose Tier 1 status, which means they won’t be able to coach on the field or in meeting rooms and can’t interact face-to-face with players.

The NFL has said it will consider exceptions for coaches who request an exemption from getting vaccinated for health or religious reasons. It is unclear whether any of the coaches has a health or religious exemption from getting the vaccine.

It’s also unclear how effectively coaches can do their jobs if they can’t be in close proximity to players. Coaches refusing the vaccine are undoubtedly putting their teams in a difficult position.

  1. If you have to wonder which teams are more likely to actually have a flare up of this I think that was just answered for us.

  2. So no Vaccine mandates… but you are not allowed to work unless you get vaccinated.

  3. The EEOC has now said that employers are allowed to require vaccinations.

It is up to each team how they want to handle that.

  4. For 99% of Americans if their organization requires vaccination they can either comply or find a new job. This is no different, especially considering exemptions for religious and health reasons.

  5. Looks like a privately owned business setting rules for it’s employees. Nothing to see here.

  6. Good for them.
Why cant they coach with a mask on?
Since that was the answer last year.

  7. Most vaccines have a 10-15 year test period. This one does too. The difference is it received an EAU, which means this is the test period. So the next decade will be interesting either way.

  8. The government won’t enforce jab mandates

The corporations will be their henchmen and enforcers.

    See above ^

  9. Their employer–ultimately the NFL–is abiding by CDC policy to adhere to safety protocols within the workplace. Give them a deadline to get the vaccine or terminate their employment.

  10. They’re lucky that’s the fullest extent of their punishment. If it were up to me, I’d say you get vaccinated or you’re fired. Maybe that will effectively be the case here.

  11. Why? If they are not vaccinated they are only putting themselves and others not vaccinated at risk. That’s their choice. It’s the same as wearing a seatbelt. If you don’t want to buckle up, that’s on you if you go flying through the window.

  12. Again (can’t believe this has to be continually explained), Americans have the right to Free speech. But, your employer has the right to bar or fire you for your actions. If these individuals feel that strongly about getting the vaccine, fine. But, they should also understand it could cost them their jobs.

Also, many of the people complaining here against the team policies were the same that had no problem with Kaepernick losing his job. This is no difference. Free speech and thought has consequences.

  13. So no Vaccine mandates… but you are not allowed to work unless you get vaccinated.
    ————————————————–
Incorrect. They’re allowed to work, just not face-to-face. If these coaches are irreplaceable, then the teams will find a way to make it work. If they’re not irreplaceable, then it’s a good idea to start looking for another job. Or get the vaccine.

  14. The virus is still raging like crazy in other parts of the world. You can walk around unvaccinated if you want to. Why be a fool & take that chance?

  15. Scary to read these comments agreeing with forced vaccination. Also quite a statement by the writer to claim it’s safe. We don’t know and won’t know for years how safe or unsafe it is. It’s a personal choice and like all medical issues, is nobody else’s business. I’m for vaccinations, however they shouldn’t be mandated by the government. The next strain of flu comes along and what more mandates? IMO this is unnecessary.

  16. The government says the vaccine is not mandatory. But corporations say it is. Just more proof that corporations have more power over people and society than governments.

  17. At least a few of the coaches probably already had COVID which means they are already immune. “Follow the science.”

  18. It’s amazing how many people still can’t see the benefits of the vaccine or are just too afraid. I didn’t plan on it at first but after doing a little research I found the benefits far out weigh any negatives. I am surprised just how much more piece of mind I’ve had since I did. Those coaches are hurting their teams and their selves by being narrow minded and scared. Teams should just demote them and hire people willing to do what it takes to put COVID behind us and move on. The more people that don’t get vaccinated the longer COVID will be a problem.

  19. “Most vaccines have a 10-15 year test period.”

That was the old style vaccine. The mRNA vaccines were under development for the last 12 years. Most of the testing was completed, with only the particular new virus RNA sequence being required.

They still need to test for a few more years….just in case, but the vaccines are far, far safer than the risk of COVID.

  20. People take all kinds of medications for afib, cholesterol, RA, and hundreds of other ailments. Almost none of those drugs have had long-term testing, but people take them.

Ever listen to the commercials that list dozens of possible side effects? Yet people still take them.

The vaccine is safer than most drugs and COVID is deadly.

    Get vaccinated.

  21. “Follow the Science” We have enough info now, Unless these players are old, fat and have other prexisting conditions such as diabities, heart conditions or COPD what difference does it make ?

  22. Players who have been vaccinated can catch COVID and give the virus to their children under 12. Position coaches are committing career suicide by not getting vaccinated. Can’t teach from the press box.

  23. Some people just don’t seem to get it. IN A PANDEMIC ALL RULES ARE OFF. I don’t want to hear about your free will and your rights. You do not have the right to be selfish and expect front line workers desperately try to save your life because you wanted to flaunt your freedom of choice. I would tell those coaches either get vaccinated or your fired. Flat out. They are not worth the risk PERIOD.

  24. The NFL is a private business they can require vaccines, drug tests, etc. however they want. Not getting a vaccine is not a protected class and none of the coaches, employees, owners have a union to protect them like the players. There is not much the coaches can do unless they have some specific religious or health issue and the NFL only needs to reasonably accommodate them such as putting them in a isolation room while keeping them separate to protect those. The only way to make the players is to amend the CBA with would take agreement from both side.

Free will only is as long as you don’t impose on others, then you are violating their free will.

  25. The anti-vaccine people have their heads too far up their butts to be infected.

  26. The technology for the MRNA vaccines has been around for well over a decade. While COVID is the first real use of it, it’s been studied for quite some time. This isn’t as much as a test period as some may suggest. It is not a stretch in any way to say the vaccine is safe based on results. Additionally, vaccines produce a stronger and longer lasting response than actually getting sick according to studies. Just getting sick only temporarily gives you immunity.

Just get the vaccine. There’s really no good reason not to unless you are found to be allergic to any of the ingredients. If your employer requires it, you’re not just making a choice on the vaccine.

The government says the vaccine is not mandatory. But corporations say it is. Just more proof that corporations have more power over people and society than governments.

    =======================================================================================

And that’s how it should be.

  28. Who can guarantee this vaccine is safe and effective? I’ve had multiple people I know that had serious issues post jab. I used to love this site but your guys pushing the jab and shaming people who choose not to get it is appalling. No matter what you espouse this is an experimental drug not a safe and effective vaccine. Oh and if anything happens to you there are no financial repercussions to the manufacturer.

  29. Thank god I live in Florida where businesses can’t require it. When the vaccine came out the government said it’s not going to be mandatory. The government won’t create a database or force people to get it. But yet these stupid corporations are trying hard to make it mandatory.

  30. Society has a way of pressuring the anti vaccine crowd by implementing rules that leave little choice. You can’t fly on that plane, work this job, enter this building, attend this event. Freedom is just another word for sometimes

  31. Next rule up, all coaches must have a vasectomy in order to prevent the spread of future pandemic events.

  32. What happened to taking responsibility for your own health? If others are willing to inject themselves with irreversible mRNA cellular implants in hopes of saving themselves from COVID-19 symptoms, what do they care if others aren’t? Mind your own damn business.

  33. I had Covid- felt tired for three days, lost my taste and smell for 10. Health department called me a week after I tested positive and told me that after the 10th day of first symptoms, I was no longer contagious. People are not getting covid twice. Why get a vaccine? If a new strain comes along and people are getting it a second time- at that point I’ll get the most recent vaccine available. Until then, I’m not getting it.

  34. I think this is the article that will finally help me end my decades long association of my love for the NFL.

Nobody cares, but I do wonder how many more or less are turned off over this issue vs. the kneeling issue? Kneeling never bothered me, but this is too much for me. Forcing people to vaccinate in order to properly do their jobs is too much for me. I realize it is fine and even championed by legions of others.

As someone who was a big fan of this site from its inception and was involved with trying to set up a partnership with Jason Peery and Chad Ford back when this was nfltalk.com.

The NFL engaging in creating a two-tier class of people is it for me.

  35. This one should be fun. Watch the same people who say the players should do whatever the team tells them to do because they make so much money turn around and say this is infringing on these coaches’ rights. They hypocrisy is always funny to watch.

  36. “The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective,” Are you really sure? Do you know more than the FDA? The FDA has not approved these vaccines. They are only allowed for emergency use. The FDA will not take on the added responsibility that comes with approving the vaccines. When the FDA approves the vaccines, I will take it.

  37. I love how people love to tell other people what they should do with their own body, what medicine they should put in their body. Should we consult them on all of our medical decisions. If you have gotten the vaccine, and the vaccine works, it should not matter if I or anyone else has gotten the vaccine or has the virus, you couldn’t get it from me. If you say you could, then your admitting the vaccine doesn’t work.

  38. Listen to all the “stand for the flag” people complaining about teams firing the vaccine kneelers. Lol.

  39. Good for them. Nobody should be forced to be vaccinated if they choose not to.

  40. Every one of these coaches should file federal lawsuits against the NFL.
The rest of your life is way more important than a vaccine.
FYI, just remember before the FIRST person was vaccinated with this vaccine, 99.5% of the people that contracted the virus……. lived another way of saying this is less than 1% of all the people infected with the virus didn’t survive.

    .02% buddy, you’re overstating it’s deadliness. .

  42. Right, because people shouldn’t be cautious when the authority pushing this “vaccine” are the same folks that lied about its origin in the first place. I get everyone wants to get back to normal but rolling out an experimental vaccine globally is a bit much IMO.

  43. Don’t let them in if they’re not vaccinated to any place then they’ll get vaccinated!

  44. Good for them. Nobody should be forced to be vaccinated if they choose not to.
    —-
Do you know how many vaccines are required to work in the medical community? They’re required for school as well. This is nothing new and the NFL has as much right as any other business to require them.

Plus it helps them weed out the dummies.

  45. I just popped in for the antivaxxing patriots who wouldn’t down a vial of Polio but rail because an employer doesn’t want a communicable disease ravaging their business. Same freedom of choice in the military too. Flip side is that you’re probably not deploying or getting any temporary duties in foreign lands. Nothing to do with Uncle Sam, just that other countries require it before entering. No blowback over your choice, but eventually your peers consider you “that guy” that’s Blue Falconing everyone else. The requirement isn’t violating your rights, they just consider it a hazard that they need to mitigate. They’re respecting your freedom to not get vaccinated, but they also need to look out for everyone else.

  46. Even calling this thing a vaccine is misleading, it’s more akin to a seasonal flu shot and according to Pfizer’s CEO a booster shoot is going to be necessary for all those that got “vaccinated” in a few months.

Goes without saying that one is right to be skeptical about the “vaccine” after all the lies and misinformation that have already been exposed from the same sources pushing it.

  47. The people’s so called hero Dr. fauci said in his emails that Hydroxycorquin works against Covid 19, so why do you need to take the jab?

  48. The only people not vaccinated at this point are at least a little mind controlled

  49. I was OK with the team/league suspending Kaepernick (even though I sided with his cause), just like I’m OK with these coaches losing their jobs if they don’t comply with keeping the workplace safe for all involved, including fans. In both these instances, the employer holds the trump card–coaches and players agree to terms set forth in both the CBA and their individual contracts. If employers deem that employees are not keeping up their end of the agreement, they have the right to not honor their contract and, therefore, not pay them. By refusing to get the vaccine, these coaches are more of a danger to society than Kaepernick could ever be.

  50. I see a revival coming to the NFL…..
whole bunch of coaches are going to get religion!

  51. I’m pro vaccine, but I don’t think the NFL should be punishing those who choose not to get it. Positive incentives like getting to take your mask off or even vax bonuses obviously work better. Employers in my area are taking this approach.

  52. Hilarious that the same people who want players cut for kneeling have a problem with coaches suffering consequences for not getting vaccinated!

  53. This is wrong on a number of different levels. Forcing people to do it in order to work is wrong. Banning the unvaccinated to protect vaccinated people seems silly. People are right to question if this vaccine is right for them. Yet, a group of people that thinks one way, thinks it should be able to force the others to comply like they did. Sorry comrade. Nyet!!

  54. Safe and effective according to…?

Settled science has killed a lot of people.

  55. I smell a lot of HIPAA lawsuits in coming, coaches and assistant coaches will be partial team owners soon!

The real idiots are the ones that listen to everything our lying government tells them!

  57. Let’s give Dr Florio the benefit of the doubt, and assume that the vaccines are 100% “safe & effective”. They are now available to anyone who wants them. So anybody – including any NFL coach/player/employee, is free to get vaccinated. Once vaccinated, because it’s “safe & effective” doesn’t that mean that if they are exposed to some maskless, unvaccinated person, that they have nothing to worry about? So why the uproar if some people don’t want it? These rabid forced-vax zealots make zero sense. As usual.

  58. Why do you think people are being offered tickets to games, million dollar lottery, college tuition being paid in full just to take the vaccine?
Remember before the virus came along, these same offers where being offered if you got the flu vax?
    Yeah neither do I……

    ==================

My friend’s father passed shortly after getting the vaccine. Another friend is experiencing soreness and headaches months after being vaccinated.

  61. Hilarious that the same people who want players cut for kneeling have a problem with coaches suffering consequences for not getting vaccinated!

    ________________________________

I guess the kneeling thing is applicable to all situations and needs to be referenced on a daily basis.

People watch football on Sundays to watch football, not be treated to race politics. Easy to understand the weariness.

People also think taking the vaccine, should be a choice left to the individual, not forced upon them. What exactly is wrong with that, I have no idea.

  62. Wow, how is this okay? Free will choice in the USA correct?

You are free not to get one, and they are free not to employ you.

  63. If coaches and assistants don’t get vaccinated, it renders them unable to perform their job, and that should be enough to terminate their contract.

Last I checked the NFL isn’t in the healthcare industry, so it doesn’t need to follow HIPAA guidelines…

  66. Not long ago, those who suggested that COVID came from a lab in Wuhan were dismissed as being conspiracy theorists and cancelled on social media. They were called RACISTS and in some cases fired from their jobs. Persona non grata!

Today, even Fauci says it’s be a possibility and should be investigated.

Are “talking heads” embarrassed and have they apologized to those whose lives they damaged by their opinions stated as fact?

hahaha You crack me up! Not a chance!

Now, people who are waiting and watching the effects of the shots are wondering why vaccinated people are so concerned about them because if the vaccine really works those who got the shots would be protected, right? And yet, some folks on this site say the cautious ones should be fired. Good for the NFL!

They have learned absolutely nothing about listening to “experts”.

  67. What is going on with some of the commenters here? Getting vaccinated does not protect other people around you. It protects… yourself only in a way where your body would be able to fare better against the vaccine. Now if your employer has invested a lot of $$$ in hiring you and training you, and you get sick, guess what? Your employer won’t be happy. This is why they’re doing this. And if you’re one of the coaches and don’t want to get vaccinated, go look for another job that allows you to go unvaxxed… really simple stuff.

  68. Ha Ha Ha. I find it funny how people confuse rights with freedom. Working for a company is not your right! You have the “freedom” to not work for a company if you do not agree with the policies in place. You have the “right” to choose what you want to do with your body (not getting into other facets of that discussion, cough, cough Texas) and I totally understand that. But the choices that you make, may make your career opportunities limited as that is your “freedom”. I have to pass a TB (Tuberculosis) test if I want to work in a LTC (i.e. Old Age Home). How is this different???

Side note. I am a Canadian if that makes any difference.

  69. I respect an employer’s right to create a safe workplace. But does an unvaccinated player or coach actually make it unsafe? The only way anything changes is if the vaccinated players unify with the unvaccinated. It’s up to the NFLPA Union. Unify the players and you’ve got a chance to all play. Too bad the coaches don’t have a union.

  70. At this point, not being vaccinated is just going to hurt your own team. Its obviously their choice, one I disagree with, but they’ve made the decision they’d rather be unvaccinated and have to deal with these protocols than not. It is what it is.

  71. You should not be forced to get the shot or wear a mask, you have the right to take your chances and if you are scared you have the right to stay home

  72. How stupid can grown men get not taking the vaccine and give up a high paying job that most people would kill for. This Its a free choice whether to get the vaccine that goes both ways . The employer can say you don’t work here if you don’t get it. Health insurance companies can drop your coverage so this “FREE” doesn’t mean it has to always go your way.

100% incorrect. The jab prevents transmission.

  74. So many people love telling others what to do, but they hate being told by others what they can and can’t do. Everyone is for freedom when it’s their own rights they’re concerned about, but we’re quick to make decisions about other people’s rights. There isn’t unlimited freedom in America. There are speed limits, etc. Laws about where you can shoot a gun. You can drive, and you can drink, but you can’t drink and drive. So we have lots of freedoms, but we try to protect the safety and well-being of others, too. So you can kill yourself, but they don’t want you driving drunk and killing other innocent people. You can choose to get infected with the Covid virus, but they don’t want you going around infecting other innocent people. It’s called a civilization. If there weren’t any laws, it wouldn’t be a civilization.

Actually dont. Its a free country and they are completely free to refuse. I personally did get my own, I personally think its not a clear cut decision with some valid arguments on both sides but all things add up to it being the right thing to do and did it on that reasoning alone. Also thinking that makes me wish everybody would do it. I beg everyone please do it. Ill drive you. Ill buy you lunch. But despite how strongly I feel that way, neither myself nor anyone else has any right to start ordering people to do it. Because if we did, that opens a far worse can of worms.

That said…its also a free country where any organization can choose to not employ an individual if for any reason they were not able to perform the job they were hired for. Its not the organization punishing anyone, its just the organization trying to run and function.

  76. Having two family members stricken with polio, all I can say is anyone who refuses the COVID vaccine is playing with fire and stupid on top of it.

    __________

What is wrong with that is you do not have a choice when it comes to protecting public health. You do not have a choice to spread covid19 to your fellow human beings, just like you do not have a choice to spread measles, polio, etc. to other children by sending your unvaccinated children to school.

  78. We have never experienced a virus which has closed down many parts of the world simultaneously. Millions and millions of deaths. It’s called a pandemic… The NFL is a billion dollar business. A season without football ??? Think about it. All of these variables, and the science behind these vaccines. America has rights. But is the individual right to allow the pandemic to continue and more to die the American way? What if Patrick Mahomes got sick and was out 2 games because of his coach not getting vaccinated. Your team is important and all of its players need to be team players.

As someone who DOES work in the healthcare industry and who DOES know HIPAA laws, you should probably stop talking about things you don’t understand. HIPAA laws don’t say an employer can’t enforce vaccinations – they are about protecting the disclosure of Personal Health Information – PHI. If an employer chooses to enforce vaccinations, it’s up to the employee to either abide and willingly provide that PHI (in this case their proof of vaccination card), or they can not have a job, which they should not if they refuse vaccination.

This comment is extremely misleading. The fundamental structure of most of the vaccines has already been in development for almost 20 years.

The first development push to create a coronavirus vaccine started after SARS, which was in 2003. Moderna was founded for expressly the purpose of perfecting mRNA vaccines. It was founded in 2009.

  82. As usual the truth lies in the middle. There is no clearcut answer to the question of getting it. The fact is that there are valid arguments both ways. Speaking for myself I felt that in the end it still added up to getting it being the best thing to do. Not the perfect thing by any means, but the best path forward under the circumstances. I also feel that strongly enough that I do wish and hope everyone should get it. But in no way would I want to be ordering people to. It might tick me off that they wont, it does in fact. But still no ordering anyone. Thats an even bigger wrong.

  83. And the NFL can tell players not to kneel during the anthem, too, right? Just a private business laying down the rules for their employees.

  84. I got the vaccine because I think it’s the right thing to do, I also don’t think the Govt has any right to tell you what to do with your body, men or women. That said this isn’t the Govt and if you want to work for a company you play by their rules or find another job.
