The difference between the Adam Coon and Tim Tebow signings

With the Titans giving a shot to a former wrestler on Friday, some of the many Tebowmaniacs are arguing that Tennessee’s unconventional move is no different than Jacksonville’s decision to sign former baseball player Tim Tebow.

It’s very different.

Adam Coon, a three-time All-American wrestler, is a project. Yes, he’s older than the usual fresh-out-of-college athlete who excelled in some other sport. At 26, he’s still seven years younger than Tebow. But the idea is to see whether the high-level wrestling skills can translate to football.

If they can, he’ll stay. If they can’t, he’ll be gone.

While some would say that same standard applies to Tebow, Tebow ultimately will be judged by a coach who has known Tebow for years. And that coach continues to lay the foundation to find a way for a tight end who already has sold so many jerseys to be on the team in September.

Coon comes to Nashville with no special consideration. He’ll make it or he won’t. He’ll earn a spot or he won’t. He’ll show enough to stick around on the practice squad or he won’t. And he’s far more likely to be judged objectively and dispassionately, just one of 90 on a roster that inevitably will cut to 53.

It’s within Urban Meyer’s prerogative to sign Tebow, just like it’s within Tennessee’s prerogative to sign Coon. But there’s a gimmick factor with Tebow that is undeniable. And that’s fine. Again, it’s Meyer’s prerogative. That’s still the biggest difference between the two situations.

  1. So much judgement on Tebow , Mike.
Clearly if he is not an asset to the Jags, he will be cut.
    NFL is a competitive league.

  2. I don’t understand why some people seem upset about Tebow being on the 90 man roster. Other than Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and Tim Tebow, most people couldn’t name 3 other players on the roster.

  3. Tebow was a project at QB. He failed. He was a project at baseball. He failed. Now he will be a (very old) project at TE. He will fail. Does anyone really think he will even stand in and block a defensive end? Or that he will catch a pass over the middle with a safety zeroed in on his chest? Will he run down on special teams, shed blockers, and nail a ball carrier? No, no, and nope.

That said, he will “make” the game roster, whether he’s earned it or not ( he won’t). He will be inserted into the games, whether he can play or not ( he can’t). He is a publicity stunt. A circus act. And delusional Tebowstans will think he’s headed for the Hall of Fame. Then sooner or later ( sooner ) he and Urban will walk away together, slightly wealthier, and become a TV booth act.

  4. Tim Tebow sure strikes up a lot of scorn and mockery for someone who has never been accused of wrongdoing, treats everyone with respect and organizes a high school prom for kids with special needs.

  5. I have a friend who’s never been accused of wrongdoing, he treats everyone with respect and he works with the Make A Wish Foundation. Does that mean he can play professional football? No. But then he’s not Urban Meyer’ special pet. And Urban has tickets, jerseys and bobble heads to sell.

  6. @usmutts3 – Did your friend lead an NFL team to a division title and win a playoff game, setting a franchise record for passer rating in that game? Maybe you’re comparing apples and oranges.

  7. Tim Tebow sure strikes up a lot of scorn and mockery

You can thank his fans for that.

Constantly saying what a wonderful person he is, for no other reason than his religious beliefs line up with theirs. He could convert to Islam tomorrow and y’all would drop him like a hot potato.

  8. Carlton Haselrig (google him) didn’t play college football and he turned out pretty well for the Steelers.

  9. Tebow is getting a chance because of his relationship with Meyer. How is that any worse than Belichick’s son, or Kubiak’s son, or Zimmer’s son or Reid’s son or any other head coach’s son getting an assistant coach job? You’re telling me there were no more qualified candidates for those jobs?

  10. Trevor Lawrence would be getting a lot more attention, and he’d be a lot less focused on trying to learn how to play NFL QB, if it weren’t for Tim Tebow being in town. It’s a QB league, and Lawrence is one of, if not the highest rated QB to ever come out of college. Just the fact that Tebow is helping his new QB stay focused easily makes him one of the most valuable players on the team. Urban Meyer doesn’t have to hold our hands and give us an explanation about things we don’t really know much about. Urban Meyer took the job because he wants to win, and he knew he’d be picking one of the best QB prospects ever. Anything he can do to help the process along of getting Trevor Lawrence up to speed, he’ll do it. You’re looking at it, even if you can’t see it.

  11. I think it was genius to sign Tim Tebow. If not for Tebow, everyone would be talking about the #1 pick at quarterback and the pressure would just keep building from now until the season starts.

  12. Both players are taking the 90th spot on the roster. 5 years ago they only brought 80 guys to camp. These are throwaway signings. If Tebow shows he can’t do it and they still keep him in the regular season, then there is a point until then, there’s nothing to see here. Most of the last 10 signings are camp fillers. Take reps off the veteran players.

  13. Urban Meyer doesn’t have to hold our hands and give us an explanation about things we don’t really know much about. Urban Meyer took the job because he wants to win.
    ____________

Urban took the job because he likes money, period. He knows that he will be paid handsomely the next few years whether he wins or not.

  14. Both are marketing reaches. Tebow is a sure fire entertainment money maker, exclusively brought in to hype & bring attention to the team. It will undoubtedly create interest which directly creates monetary value. This current situation is not really any different. Attention, Interest in the team, is generated during the slowest period of the offseason. Both are long shots to play in a regular season game, but both will likely be on the practice squad.

  15. It’s fascinating how people think that if Tim Tebow wasn’t on the roster, that Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t be able to do his job.
I don’t know why Lawrence would have less “focus” just because people would be talking about him. You people sure are playing Lawrence cheap if you think that just because he has few more articles written about him, that all of a sudden he forgets how to play football.

  16. Urban Meyer was making millions at fox just talking about football. Him taking a head coaching job in the NFL probably had more to do with ego and the love of football more than it had to do with $$$

  17. Meyer, like other college coaches new to the NFL, signed Tebow because he did great things in college football.
Meyer, like other college coaches new to the NFL, believes their former college star will return to glory with Meyers coaching.

I cannot recall a situation where a college star that didn’t quite transition their game to the NFL, was resurrected to a very good NFL player when reunited with their college coach.

    Either way, good luck Tim

  18. Stephen Neal had a very good career for the Patriots – same profile

  19. The Vikings did this with Brock Lesnar, when he left WWE before going to UFC.

  20. Tebow could save some money by selling his house and pocketing the cash, cause he lives rent-free in the libs heads.

  21. Urban Meyer was making millions at fox just talking about football. Him taking a head coaching job in the NFL probably had more to do with ego and the love of football more than it had to do with $$$.
    ___________

While I agree that it has something to do with ego, there is no way that Meyer was making millions at Fox. He was lucky if he was making one million per year.

  22. I have a friend who’s never been accused of wrongdoing, he treats everyone with respect and he works with the Make A Wish Foundation. Does that mean he can play professional football?

How many Heisman trophies, national championships and playoff wins does your friend have?

  23. The Jaguar’s sales and merchandising department had a huge say in signing Tebow. He brings in more than just Jersey sales, but the PR. The real money is other sponsors who invest in the Jags and tV revenue of the Jags are on national TV. Let’s face it, the Jags are not one of the Premier teams in the league where the casual fan will lift a finger to watch them. With Tebow and his popularity with the Fox News crowd, suddenly they’re more interesting to the TV producers

  24. The Anti-Tebow folks are going to have a real conniption when Tebow runs for President, and likely wins. He has to be 35 to do that. He’s currently 33 so he has a few years to showcase his greatness.
Tim St.Tebow 2024! All-American. The HERO we need in these troubling times.

  25. Just here to remind everyone that Tebow has ONE national championship. Y’all keep trying to give him credit for the one that Chris Leak won.

  26. @usmutts3 – Did your friend lead an NFL team to a division title and win a playoff game, setting a franchise record for passer rating in that game? Maybe you’re comparing apples and oranges.

Lmao you’re acting like the other 13 games weren’t straight trash.
Tebow only hadta job because of Urban.

  28. All the Tebow lovers out there just speaks to your lack of football knowledge. 100% a gimmick signing – this is Eddie Gaedel 2.0.

  29. Tebow will definitely make the team and win NFL Comeback Player of the Year! He IS that good!

  30. Tebows signing has nothing to do with improving the team, it’s about generating hype and selling tickets to games he’ll watch on tv

  31. The NFL is a business. Decisions are made based not just on talent but also how to increase revenue. Fans who don’t understand that are the ones who complain about things like this.

  32. Tebow scored 34 times with 9 Ints in 549 touches in his first 16 games of play in Denver.
Lamar Jackson, the 2019 MVP, scored 32 times in 687 touches in his first 16 games.
Tebow was 33% more efficient at scoring per touch, passing or rushing, in his first 16 games of playing time than Jackson.
Meyer just hired Tebow, one of the fastest scoring QBs in their first 16 games of playing time since Dan Marino in 1984.
If the Jaguars quarterbacks start failing, you’ll see Tebow play QB. Fortunately, all but one of the Jaguar’s conference games are week 5 or later. Remember when Tebow took a 1-4 team to the playoffs? You may see it again.
