Maxx Crosby: At the end of the day, our defense has to get a lot better

USA TODAY Sports

The Raiders’ defense has been the club’s most prominent issue since Jon Gruden returned to coach the team in 2018.

While the unit made some strides in 2019, it regressed in 2020 to finish at 25th in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed.

After Gruden hired Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator in January, the team has spent the offseason program getting the entire playbook installed. In an appearance on the Raiders’ “Upon Further Review” podcast, defensive end Maxx Crosby said that process is going well so far.

“They’re putting a lot on us mentally so we can learn on the fly and get everything in, because on game day, you’re not calling every single call, but you’ve got to be ready. You’ve got to know everything and be prepared,” Crosby said. “So coach Bradley does a great job. Me personally, I know once I mess up, I feel like that’s how I learn. Like, ‘Oh I messed up on that last time, I know that I need to do.’ And everybody’s different. So it’s been a great process. Everybody’s learning, everybody’s bought in. At the end of the day, our defense has got to get a lot better and we’re just working. That’s what we’re doing every single day and it’s been awesome.”

Crosby has led the Raiders in sacks in each of his first two pro seasons, with 10.0 in 2019 and 7.0 in 2020. If Bradley’s scheme paired with the signing of edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue work out, Crosby should have plenty of opportunities to get after QBs in 2021.

  1. Better DC, Less snaps, no covid, Max should be more 2019 version than 2020. Hopefully.

  2. It helps if your defense gets a lot better at the *beginning* of the day, but I digress.

  3. If Raiders fans think Gus Bradley is going to improve their defense, be prepared to be disappointed.

Actually the weren’t bad at the “beginning” of the day (first quarter) It actually was the end of the day (fourth quarter) where they were truly awful. Just check out the Miami or 2nd Chief or Charger game for proof. So Maxx is right. If they were better at the end of the day in just those 3 games they would have been 11-5

  5. There is absolutely nothing better about any aspect of this team. Typical pre-season pipe dream talk. The Raiders will finish the season in 3rd place and out of the playoffs like they always do.

  6. Who is Maxx Crosby? Did the Raiders ever replace Mack? They had so many draft picks from that trade and still haven’t made the playoffs. On balance, the Bears have made the playoffs twice and won the division since that trade.

Bears won that trade by a mile.

  7. The Raiders can say all they want, but at the end of the season they will be sitting at home on the couch watching Mahomes in the playoffs.

  8. Bears got into the playoffs, Let’s count Mack’s sacks , hmmn zero, nada, oops, how much $$ per sack here, what else could have been bought instead of a one trick pony…

  9. The last 2 seasons the Bears are 16-16 while the Raiders are 15-17 which includes a 24-21 win over the Bears. That’s a pretty short mile.

Also the Bears are the same brilliant organization that not only traded up for Mitchell Trubisky which in and of itself is an all time stupid move but they did so with Mahomes and Watson sitting there.

  10. Offensives completely change their scheme for Mack, you can boast you sack counts, that’s fine. Mack’s team will enjoy post season contention, lol.
