Pass rusher Danielle Hunter was unhappy with his contract. Now, he’s happy . . . or happier.

Hunter and the Vikings have agreed to terms on a reworked deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. It’s a win-win with Hunter getting significant money sooner than later, while the Vikings get Hunter to report.

Hunter, 26, is expected to attend the team’s mandatory minicamp that starts Tuesday.

Hunter gets $5.6 million due as a signing bonus this year, according to Rapoport. The Vikings now owe Hunter an $18 million roster bonus the fifth day of the league year in 2022.

So Minnesota will have a decision to make next March: Pay Hunter $20 million or so for 2022, release him or sign him to a new deal.

Hunter had expressed dissatisfaction with his contract, which runs through 2023, because of the annual new-money average of $14.4 million.

Hunter earned Pro Bowl honors in 2018 and 2019 after making 14.5 sacks in each season. He has 54.5 sacks since the Vikings made him a third-round choice in 2015. But he missed all of the 2020 season because of a neck injury.

  1. Sit out a year and get 5 and half million guaranteed. That’s good work if you can get it.

  2. That’s how you handle business. Getting Hunter back is going to be huge. Sounds like he’s healthy and ready to wreak havoc.

  3. This defense is officially locked and loaded. The offense is top 10. I’m feeling pretty good about the upcoming season.

  4. This is the kind of compromise most people expected. They couldn’t give Hunter an entirely new contract with the neck issue hanging over the situation, so they gave him a short-term bump in guaranteed money this year with an opportunity to revisit the contract after he proves he’s healthy. The Vikings find solutions to keep their players happy while the Packers try to replace MVPs with over-drafted rookies.

  5. He’s done, neck injuries are next to impossible to come back from. He just wants an extra pay day before he hangs em up. His current deal only guaranteed him 100k, now he gets 5.6M.

  6. Completely different defense in 2021. Doesn’t guarantee it’s better but this group is more promising.

  7. Seems like a fair deal. Advance the bonus this year as a sign of good faith and to keep Hunter happy this year, and if he says healthy the worst he makes in 2022 is $20M which is market rate for a DE of his ability. Not only keeps Hunter happy, but other players see how the team is willing to do its best to accommodate those that outperform their contract.

  8. Just curious if Rick Spielman referred to Hunter as a “complicated fella”. Apparently that is something some GM’s do when they are trying to convince their big stars to not hold out.

  9. So about 5-6 mil left to sign Sheldon richardson at 3 technique or add another edge rusher with something to prove. Things are looking good. Now the offensive line needs to play up to potential and we should be a team to watch out for.

Hunter did not sit out. He was injured. Big difference.

The Vikings have absolutely improved in every area that was a disaster last year. I think. How’s that special teams unit looking? Honestly, any new punt returner will be an upgrade.

  12. How can we get so excited over resigning a player who hasn’t helped us sniff a championship yet???

I will guarantee the defense is better this year. Nobody that can speak football terms would say otherwise.

  14. This Vikings team is the most underrated team in the league. Currently 40-1 to win the SB. Time to start making money hand over fist people. This is an easy one. Offense will remain a top 10 offense and I will be didappointed if this D is not a top 5 unit. Teams that have top 10 offense and defenses are perennial contenders. I see no exception here.
