Derek Carr reached out to Carl Nassib after the Raiders defensive end announced he is gay. The team’s star quarterback said he told Nassib he loves him.

Carr sent a text message to several reporters in response to questions about his reaction to Nassib’s revelation.

“I have often said I love my teammates,” Carr said. “I mean it. We always say we are a family in that Raider locker room, and we mean that too. I want to win a championship here with Carl and the rest of our teammates.”

Raiders owner Mark Davis, coach Jon Gruden and team president Marc Badain all voiced their support for Nassib, and fans have made Nassib’s jersey the best-selling across the Fanatics network.

  1. I am impressed and relieved to see the support continue. Very different than the response just a few short years back. Sadly the trolls on this site are already adding jokes and complaining. This news deserves celebration

  2. I appreciate the stance the NFL is taking on this; fully embracing Carl Nassib. I am just perplexed as to where was all this support when Michael Sam (the original) spoke out? This guy was star player in college when he came out and received no support from anyone, and lost his career in the NFL as a result.

Carl Nassib is a good NFL player. Michael Sam is not. Lots of college stars aren’t good enough for the NFL. There was another guy coming out of school the same year as Sam. His name was Jackson Jeffcoat. He was a star in college at The University of Texas. All kinds of stats. His father was a pro bowl defensive lineman for the Cowboys. He was about the same talent level as Sam, maybe even a little better. He was a consensus All American. Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent, and now plays in Canada. Nobody was discriminating against him either. He just was not quite good enough for the NFL, even though he was a college super star. There is a lot of discrimination against lots of people. Gays included. But not in this case. Not in Michael Sam’s case.

  4. Nassib knows his career is winding down, only avg five sacks a season. He could get cut or traded if his play doesnt pick up.
