Who was Tom Brady referring to with his “motherf–ker” remark?

The question has swirled throughout the NFL for the past 24 hours. Who is the “motherf–ker” to whom Tom Brady is referring in his comments regarding a team that lost interest in signing Brady last year because they were “sticking with” the other guy?

Speculation has centered on 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, because: (1) Brady wanted to play for the 49ers; and (2) the 49ers decided to stick with Garoppolo.

Other possibilities, in our view, are the Titans and Ryan Tannehill, the Bears and Mitchell Trubisky, the Broncos and Drew Lock, and maybe the Raiders and Derek Carr.

Tannehill makes little sense. He was the comeback player of the year in 2019, and he beat Brady in his last game ever with the Patriots. Trubisky makes little sense, because there was no reporting linking Brady to the Bears. Ditto for the Broncos, given Brady’s horrible history playing in Denver. Carr makes a little more sense, if Brady was truly interested in the Raiders.

Brady reportedly showed interest in the Chargers and the Colts. Neither team was considering a quarterback option that would constitute “sticking with” anyone. The Chargers signed Tyrod Taylor in the same free agency cycle, and the Colts signed Philip Rivers.

We posted a Twitter poll on Monday, and Garoppolo has been the overwhelming choice.

Regardless of who it was, here’s hoping Brady is asked that question at some point between now and training camp, or during his first media availability of training camp.

  1. Well considering that he was a huge 49ers fan when he was a kid, it seems likely he would have wanted to finish his career there and maybe win a Superbowl to match his childhood idol, Joe Montana. Probably a big mistake by the 49ers.

  2. I think it was a generalized thought. As if to say, ‘I’m Tom Brady. You don’t want to sign me?’ Directed at nobody in particular. Brady doesn’t roll like that.

  3. Why even make this comment?
It serves no purpose other than to impress the barbershop crowd.

  4. “Regardless of who it was, here’s hoping Brady is asked that question at some point between now and training camp, or during his first media availability of training camp.”

He won’t. He does not publicly make negative comments about other players, and he’s probably pissed the motherf-ker comment was outed.

  5. I’m pretty sure it was Jimmy G because Belichick told the press a few years ago when Garoppolo was still with the Pats, “Jimmy can make all the throws Tom can make.” Given how Brady loves to pile chips on his shoulders, I’ve always felt that comment by Bill continues to piss the GOAT off.

  6. The only thing we can say for sure is there’s literally only one QB who can talk that kind of smack about literally any other QB and you can’t question him on it, and that’s Tom Brady. Being the GOAT has to have its privileges!

  7. I bet Brady’s mom has given him a good talking-to for his bad language and manners.

  8. Anyone from the list of QBs Brady wouldn’t a shake hands with after losing to them a possible candidate?

Huh? It wasn’t like there was a hidden camera or tape recorder. He said it. While on camera. Being filmed for and HBO show.

  10. More than likely he was talking to himself in the mirror. His daily validation for being old as a dinosaur.

  11. Not sure Brady would say that about some random qb, seems a little personal, either because of the team or because of the QB, both of which point to Jimmy G.

  12. Ego out of control. He was great once– probably the best of all time. But he is barely average at this point and should have respect for other players.

  13. “But he is barely average at this point and should have respect for other players.”

He was 3rd in the league in passing last season with 40 TDs and only 12 INTs with no training camp in a new system. I don’t think you understand what the words “barely” and “average” mean

  14. My first instinct in hearing this was someone no one’s mentioned.. Drew Brees. Not 100% sure Brady would talk about him that way.. but it would make sense if he thought Brees was washed up (which turned out to be true) and wanted the Saints job. Thinking longer on it though… gotta be Garoppolo.. he knows him personally as a former teammate and probably dislikes the guy. The fact that Brady grew up a 49ers fan and probably wanted to play for his favorite team with “that MFer” blocking him from it.. makes sense.

Don’t think so. According to Brady’s sister (UCLA Softball player Maya’s mom), Brady’s mom is the most competitive Brady of them all when she gets on a sports field.

  16. It wasn’t garoppolo. Him and Brady share the same agent and even if people think Brady hates garoppolo he’s not gonna screw over his agent friend who he has been with his whole career.

It’s someone like Trubisky who is a known underacheiver. Brady wouldn’t be pissed if a team sticks with a pro bowler/ great player over him but if he got passed over for a nobody that would set him off.

  17. Btw… anyone assuming its someone in a cold weather city.. one of the biggest reasons he left the Pats was to play in a warmer climate his wife preferred.

  18. It was likely the Bears/Pace/Trubisky, who traded for Foles shortly thereafter. 😂

  19. We’d think it was Jimmy G, and that would make sense and be right, but I don’t think Brady would let that out if it really was about that. Plus he’s friends with Garappolo and not that type of dude. I gotta think it was someone he at least has no personal relationship with.
