Evidence of the interest of the Chicago Bears in building a new stadium at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights continues to accumulate.

The Chicago Tribune reports that local officials have taken action to prohibit certain uses of the facility, but that the stadium has been approved for a football stadium.

Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot thinks the Bears are bluffing. If they are, it’s a good one.

Churchill Downs owns the property, and Churchill Downs just partnered with the Bears on a gambling sponsorship. The Bears made a bid to buy the land last week.

Arlington Heights voted earlier this week to allow a football stadium, casino gambling, or horse racing at the location.

  1. I think the Bears have been playing in Soldier Field since I was a child and I`m 57 years old! Good luck with the new stadium!!!

  2. Maybe Chicago should relocate Lori Lightfoot…..People won’t miss her as much as they would miss the Bears

  3. Everyone in Chicago should be looking to move out. The city is quickly turning into Detroit West.

  4. This is a non-story. Moving from downtown to a suburb is a good idea for the city from a planning & land use perspective (I’m not talking politics). They’d still be the Chicago Bears.

Wonderful Soldier Field occupies prime real estate in a prime market. It’s a horrible thing to do to that land to make it used 8-10 times per year.

  5. If they build a new stadium, I hope it’s a dome so that the usage can be maximized year round.

  6. Root4cleveland,

Chicago has a lakefront protection ordinance that dates back to The Burnham Plan.
Only one private building was allowed east of Lake Shore Drive and there is zero chance that the ordinance will be changed.

Soldier Field sits on part of the Museum Campus. If it gets torn down, the land will most likely be used as park space but possibly as a new culture institution.

  7. My Dad was part of the Marine color guard at Bears games just after WWII. It’s unfortunate that the Bears organization doesn’t respect the tradition of that stadium. The Bears should be willing to pay to renovate it. They owe that to the City of Chicago and their fans.

The Bears didn’t start playing at Soldier Field until 1971. World War II ended [n 1945. That doesn’t qualify as “just after”.

That was at Wrigley Field field the Bears and Cubs played at Wrigley while the Cardinals and White Sox played at Comiskey Park when the Cards went to St. Louis Southside’s eventually became Bear Fans . Remember the only reason the Bears are called the Bears is because P.K. Wrigley let Halas play at his field
