The Browns made several moves to improve their defense this offseason, including selecting cornerback Greg Newsome and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah with their first two picks on the draft.

Newsome was the 26th overall pick in the first round and Owusu-Koramoah was the 52nd overall pick in the second round.

But according to Cleveland defensive coordinator Joe Woods, both players are performing as if they were selected in the top 32.

“Greg and JOK, those guys are very smart players, and they are very competitive players,” Woods said via Anthony Poisal of the team’s website. “They come out there and they just go hard all the time. They are trying to learn as much football as they can.

“To me, it felt like we got two first-rounders, for sure.”

Woods touted Newsome’s versatility to play outside and in the slot at corner, while also praising Owusu-Koramoah’s athleticism and ability to match up against tight ends.

“They just bring a different element to the team,” Woods said. “It’s been good having both of those guys involved.”

Newsome and Owusu-Koramoah are just two of the team’s many additions on defense, headlined by safety John Johnson and lineman Jadeveon Clowney. If they all perform up to expectations, Cleveland is likely to be a serious contender in the AFC.

  1. Here we go.

Meanwhile, the hatches are battened down in Foxborough. Some teams will never learn.

  2. The free agency signings alone were enough to put this team on another level. Which is good, because they were not a good unit last year so free agents put them into probably the middle of the pack.

If these two draftees turn out (which 31 other teams can say/hope for) they could be an elite D.

  3. EVERYBODY looks good in shorts and t-shirts. This is the time of year when all the teams think they have a chance. You won’t hear anything negative for a while.

  4. Wasn’t Manzel a great 1st round pick also, like Brady Quinn? Or Courtney Brown, even though most of the band wagon Browns fans have no idea who he is.

  5. A lot of chirping from a team that, though hopeful and looking improved, has yet to really do anything when it counts. Promise less, deliver more……

  6. Well considering they haven’t had a good 1st round pick since Joe Thomas, I wouldn’t put any stock into this. Personally I thought both picks were awful. Nick Chubb has been their best Draft Pick since Bernie Kosar and he was their 2nd 2nd round pick after that debacle of an Austin Corbett pick who was a 7th Round talent
